The problem: The turntable stops under the weight of the sound box, a sign of dried grease within the spring assembly. Solution steps:

Someone tried to free the spring by tapping the spring housing with a heavy object. The grease becomes solid, more like plastic. Before removing the spring - pack away all the small bits and pieces in case of a spring explosion. A solidified grease glued the spring inside the housing.
Use kerosene to soak the affected parts. Also, use a soft brass brush to clean the spring so there are no scratches and possible stress points on the spring. Never, ever, ever let the spring go while packing it back into the drum. Bench test. Assemble everything back in reverse order.
