I will say that Jamey Chadwell's STYLE of offense fits the Big 10. His pistol-triple-option is so fun to watch. Its so creative.
Now hear me... I am NOT "glory days" guy that thinks we just need to go back to the option because that's what Nebraska is...
Im in favor of the triple option because in a college football world that is all spread, and slinging it all over the yard, we need to be unique and difficult to prepare for. Especially if we aren't getting top tier talent. The Veer, the Wing T, and other similar offenses that use motion on offense and unique blocking angles to level the playing field help teams like Nebraska that aren't as talented as OSU, Michigan, etc...
Paul Johnson competed for ACC conference championships at GEORGIA TECH running the triple option. Strategically speaking, I think becoming experts at that style of offense again, would catapult NU to the top of the Big 10 West(as long as its around).

This Cornhusker team has no identity. It hasn't had an identity for a long time. Nebraska will never be able to contend with the likes of any team in the SEC or Big10 for that matter if they continue to try to do what every other winning championship team is doing.
Nebraska needs a coach that will come in and develop players locally. The walk-on program is so different now than it was in the 90s, roster limits and scholarship limits have drastically changed. But Nebraska needs to build their lines and focus solely on that. Bring in those big local boys tossing around haybales on the farms and begin developing these young men into beasts that other teams cannot push through but instead do the pushing.
Nebraska then should focus their recruiting efforts on a few key athletic positions, not the entire roster. Nebraska simply doesn't have the pull for recruits that can choose Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and other schools throughout the country. Nebraska needs to embrace NIL, there's a lot of money at UNL and recruits are looking for colleges that will help them build their brand.
The next coach that comes in and does this will get Nebraska back to what we, the fans, remember of the winning years in the past. Until then, mediocrity is all we'll continue to get from our beloved Huskers.
The fans need to wake up as well, it's not the 1990s anymore, football is a much different sport than it was in the 90s. Expectations are ridiculously high for a team that hasn't done anything since.
I cannot believe the comments I was reading during Mickey Joseph's FIRST post-game press conference. The dude has had one week to prepare for the toughest game of the season, and was also coming off a terrible loss to a Sun Belt team less than a week after losing their coach. Did anyone really expect the Huskers to go into this game and hang with the 6th ranked team in the country. That defense picked out the holes in our defense and crushed their spirits even more. They shut down, they quit, they lost. All of which would have happened under Frost, as it has week in and week out over the past 4 years.
I, for one, found the press conference refreshing, a coach that took ownership. Ownership of everything, he could have stood there and said he inherited this, but he didn't. He said, "This is my fault." These kids could very well rally around him, and I believe they will. But this season's games are the culmination of what's been bred into this program for years and years. Blame whichever coach you want of the past for starting it, it doesn't really matter.
I'll always watch the Huskers, I'll always back whichever coach we have, because I LOVE HUSKER FOOTBALL. But until major changes are made to the program, I unfortunately believe we'll be settling for mediocrity and a broken culture for years to come.
I'm not a coach, I'm not a football player. I can't claim to understand what it takes to win championships, but I remember what this team was when it was winning, and we've gone a far distance away from that. It's time to get back to the basics of Husker Football and what it means to play for the Cornhuskers.
Hopefully, Trev Alberts, is thinking along the same lines and will bring someone in that has the same passion, love, and drive to pursue exactly what it takes to win games and championships.
    Go Big Red!

After doing a deeper dive into the facts, I need to set some of your detractors straightened out.
If any of you truly listened to what Connor said, you’d realize he laid out the criteria used to support his opinion.
    1. Championships
    2. All-Time Wins
    3. Bowl Appearances
    4. All-Americans
    5. Draft Success
    6. Fan Base Strength
I’d add “recent” success to the list. Even then, Nebraska belongs in Tier 2.
They are Top 10 in every category he put out. The only other schools that can claim that are Alabama, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.
In fact, Clemson and Georgia don’t make many of those top 10 lists. It’s solely based upon recent success that they’ve made the Tier 1 list.
Keep up the good work my friend!

Hey, as a CFB fan, I understand what the needs are at Nebraska. People don’t realize is that they could win the B1G West and the B1G title at least once just like you mentioned.
Honestly, I 💯% agree with you but it would take lot for a HC or coordinator from a power five conference like B1G or SEC who is having a high success and winning a conference title and compete for the national title to come to tier 2 team like Nebraska.
But in my opinion, Nebraska should keep Mickey as their HC for next season or 2 while their AD looks for the potential long term HC who can turn the program around and be a good program and be ranked at least once in every 2/3 seasons which includes being a top 25 team in terms of recruiting, to be competitive in the B1G west against teams like Wisconsin, Iowa, Purdue or Minnesota .

I'm glad you touched upon this issue of national sports media, most notably ESPN, bagging on the Nebraska's head coaching search. Many celebrated critics actually went to the effort of creating bullet point arguments why it wasn't an attractive job for top tier coaches, including Urban Meyer. Then a domino effect ensued and the dog pilling began. You artfully eviscerated the nonsense. Rather than participating and falling into this thought stream I would encourage supporters of the program to take a cynical view of the sources. Nebraskans who have a historical perspective of the program know this is not a contemporary phenomena. There have always been sports opinion writers with newspaper columns devoted to denigrating the Husker program over decades. It evolved to talking heads in a variety of forums including radio, TV, and social media. The point is these pundits and national critics have motives and when you peal back the onion layer it reveals their prejudice. They have an agenda and their animus is transparent. Why they cling to this rancor and antagonism is nonsensical and a dead end. It's subterfuge and pig pen muck raking. We ignore these critics, move on, and heal. None of us who were at the Orange Bowl in Miami after crushing a Peyton Manning led Vol's team a quarter of a century ago expected the program to endure these hardships. However, none of it has deterred or detracted the most dedicated of us from abandoning the resiliency of our passion and devotion. Like the corn in the field, the wheat on the plains, and the hay in the meadows the hope of the harvest will always renew and sustain. The Huskers will rise again because the people and the fans will always endure and always have hope. GBR

I believe that any HC hire should be from a power 5 conference program that has a solid history of winning. Even if they rarely make it to a Natty. Whether it be a current or past HC, offensive coordinator, so on and so forth. One thing I know for sure is that we need a HC that knows how to motivate the players and coaches. I'm going to use one of our opponents' coaches as an example here... Fitzpatrick. I know you can practically count on Northwestern having up and down seasons consecutively. (A real contender one year and the next being near or at the bottom of the barrel). But if you dive deeper into their recruiting, they rarely get many 4 star recruits, NO 5 stars in current history and more often than not, develope these 3 and the few 4 stars into NFL talent. Just imagine for a minute how good Northwestern would be if they could consistently real in more 4 and some 5 star recruits. (IMO), they would be a yearly contender for the B1G west.
That's the kind of leadership we need. Who knows. If Mickey Joseph can become that kind of coach, we need to keep him. If not, then we need to keep looking.
As for the rumors about Frost, I agree with you. For the moment I'm can only assume that they are just that. ... Rumors. That is until we hear from an independent investigation into said rumors. I hate to think that these are true, but only time will tell.
I'm going to do my best to catch your live show tonight, but if not, you can bet that I'll catch it afterwards.
If you were wondering, my shoulder is doing much better now after my surgery. I've opted to go to physical therapy 3 times a week instead of just twice. In some areas of my recovery I'm right on track, but in others, mainly my "active" mobility I'm far ahead of the curve. According to my Torture Maiden, er, uh, I mean physical therapist I'm far beyond 85% of any others in my stage of recovery.

I think that in coaching circles Nebraska is known for firing 9 win coaches. It was necessary to give Frost every possible opportunity to succeed if we wanted to get a decent coach. Plus the competition for coaches last year was fierce. I also think that good programs don’t leak negative info to media and fans. That was one of the things that got Pelini fired. Osborne was exceptional at keeping problems in house. To me the idea that Frost was dropping the ball and it never reached our insatiable media is promising.
As it pertains to coaching hires I think Harvey Pearlman rooked this program for 2 decades. The 9 win fires were only made worse by the ignorant hires to replace them. These weren’t small misses but evidence of a complete misunderstanding of our programs strengths and weaknesses. Going forward Nebraska needs to get off its moral high horse and hire the best football coach that will accept the job. To me that is #1 Urban Meyer #2 Hugh Freeze. Exceptional coaches aren’t available unless they have some dirt on them. Why not forgive and rehab here? Wouldn’t that be the highest moral ground? There are some up and coming coaches but most of them don’t have a history of playing physical games week in and week out. Plus Frost was an up and coming coach and the Nebraska job was way too much for him to handle. Programs like Nebraska aren’t as simple to run as programs with lower expectations. A coach can only wow Nebraska’s media and fans with the speed of recovery and not by pushing through a predetermined ceiling. And a Nebraska coach has a PR nightmare on his hands win loose or draw. He has to talk to boosters, media and fans and everything he says and does is dissected under a microscope. That’s a lot of stress. I think Fickell, Campbell and Aranda have avoided big jobs because of the Eiffel Tower expectations and the matching stress. We need a coach that thrives in that world.

I’ve been thinking Hugh Freeze would be a great fit for Nebraska. Yes, he’s had his scandals, but if he could show Trev Alberts that he’s grown past that, it would be a great opportunity for redemption. Also, he has shown success at Ole Miss, and is doing well at Liberty right now.
      Let’s go from a Frost… to a Freeze.

  • @lavenderchants6014

I got the feeling when I heard that Joseph was coming in to be the WR coach that he was way above taking that job, and though he has not been a head coach at the top level, he was assistant head coach at LSU and has been a head coach at the NAIA level, so he's not going to be surprised by the job, and I figured he was getting close to taking a head coaching job somewhere, if not here.
When I saw that Mickey had been named the assistant head coach under Frost, I thought that it made sense that he was brought in to replace Frost all along, unless of course Frost accepted the new help gracefully and the team succeeded.
Yet, I think Trev knew that Scott was not likely to do that, and now I remember little comments from Frost that may have been clues to how things were actually going.
Of course, Scott was saying that the marriage of the two offenses was going well, but then he made some comments to the press that made me think that possibly Mark and Mickey had given him some tough love about letting them run the offense, though of course they were careful to say that Scott was in charge.
It all felt odd, but then, of course, he proved he was in charge by calling the on-side kick, which almost felt like a room full of grownups that were at the mercy of a child, like an episode of Twighlight Zone.
I thought that I was imaging the whole thing until things continued to look bad, and it seemed that Scott was doing nothing about the defensive problems. Maybe if Scott had fired Chins, or told him to start tackling more in practice, he would have shown that he knew what needed to happen to fix things. Maybe that no-tackle policy was Scott's, not Chinander's. It doesn't matter now, but obviously that was a ridiculous way to build a physical team.
I saw that the offense under Mark and Mickey was showing potential, despite the glaring problems in the trenches, but when they wanted a change-up, it was Logan who came in to run option, not Purdy, though Purdy was clearly the backup for Thompson in Whipple's offense. It felt like a power struggle, but overall, it looked like Whipple was winning control of the offense, though Scott had his guys that he wanted to see get time.
The offensive issues were really minor things that, again, I could have been imagining, but the defense was clearly hapless, and Chins was just saying the same things he always said and seemed not to see the glaring problems, and nothing was being done to fix things.
So, when Scott was fired and Mickey was named as the interim, it confirmed what I had been thinking, and I wondered if Chins had a chance of surviving the changeover. He lasted a week longer than I expected.
Now, with Busch as the DC, it feels like a huge upgrade in coaching if only the team will buy-in to having to work much harder to catch up to where they ought to be.
They probably don't have time to get a ton of improvement in the trenches, but there are schematic changes that they can make to help mitigate the fact that they are small on the defensive front and weak at the offensive tackles.
In the long run, I believe that we already have a dream team of coaches, and I really hope that they can get enough improvement from these kids to win the jobs permanently. If they do, it will prove that Trev is the genius that I think he is.
    GBR!

Aranda seems like a great fit. I don’t see PJ or Fitz or even our coach, Bielema, leaving their BIG school for another.

Have been forward to seeing this vid - well done and very well thought out . I have watched for my third time and would like to throw in my humble thoughts. In most of your highlighted points you used the word " develop " as nearly a "throw-away" term. I believe that player development is the absolute keystone for consistency -- nearly all players who go to play college football with dreams to go to the NFL........they were usually the best player at their high school and usually their conference so developing that POTENTIAL is at the utmost of importance - PJ Fleck is an example. Recruiting is easier when a young player can see the history of development in the players before them. Please don't limit your choices by discounting to "power 5" conference experience -- EVERY coach on the potential list is or has been a coach in the quite "lesser" unquote conferences ........what's important is how they did with what they had - " the cream rises to the top "..

I think another expectation that the next coach needs to have is embrace the walk-on program. Nebraska had one of, if not the greatest walk-on program when Tom Osborne was the coach. This also means improving the strength and conditioning program as well. If Nebraska wants to get back to that competitive team they want to be they have to make the strength and conditioning program a priority to improve.

Hey Connor! Another great video and insightful analysis! I think you are spot on with the expectations. Some of these talking heads are either clueless or trolls. I tend think that Paul Finebaum is a troll because it drives up his numbers (though sometimes I wonder). We've had the 4th best recruiting class in the Big Ten in the majority of the last 10 years. All we have to do is live up to our recruiting rankings and we would outperform what most of these talking heads are expecting. We'd have no problem achieving the expectations you set out. I'd love to see a coach that builds the program from the inside out. Dave Aranda, Kalani Sitake and Kyle Whittingham are all examples of that type of coach. It doesn't need to be one of these coaches, but whoever takes over needs to be cut from the same cloth. I watched the BYU - Baylor game two weeks ago and it felt like I was watching a Big Ten game. Hard hitting action! I think there is this fascination with offensive and defensive schemes, but the fact of the matter is that a good team with good line play is going to win no matter the scheme. Nebraska won three national titles running the option out of the power I, and even back then pundits were saying it was out of style. With the transfer portal, I don't think it takes as long to rebuild programs as it did in the past. I would say three years is plenty of time to see if it will work.

The objective simply wasn't taken all that seriously and was lacking commitment right out of the gate. Success at UCF carried over to another program was too much for an inferior coach in over his head. For most unimaginable. Goodbye Scott. We're more of a mess than when Mike Riley left. And yes, Iowa is absolutely below Nebraska. They don’t have the recruiting base, they don’t have the brand, they don’t have the money or the same level of fan support. They’re only tier 3 because of their recent success, otherwise they’d be tier 4.

I think your expectations are a little low if you get a big time coach, in terms of frequency of championships and expectations on recruiting classes... Even Frost pops for a couple top 15ish classes. I think Bill O'Brien fits your criteria better than anybody and I bet you he would have Nebraska popping for an occasional top 10 class. And the key thing would be , he would pull in a top tier quarterback at least every other year . A Big Ten Championship once a decade is not enough in my opinion. I'd say play for four and win at least two in a 10-year time frame. That would put us in the playoff probably three times in a decade and I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a national championship once every 10 years. Given the resources.

I kinda get tired of the sense entitlement, the delusion of of the Husker fans. They were super for 36 years because they had two hall of fame coaches back to back. I rank Devaney and Osborne in the top 10 alll time. The Husker program would do well to get back to the Pelini level, let alone the Solich level, because what are the odds of getting a coach as good? And the thing is, it has NOT been recruiting. Osborne won big with a bunch of Nebraska boys, including a lot of walk ons. There is nothing particular about the job that is going to attract a name FBS coach who is already successful, as far as I can tell. So you will probably have to take a chance on some unknown guy. And if you get one of these pass happy saps to come in and air it friggin' out? Well. Just look back at what a guy named Osborne did at his peak. Hint. He didn't pussyfoot. And by the way: Osborne had no head coaching experience when he was hired.

Nebraska made its bones in the Big 8. From that time donors and fans kept things going for a few years. All that is long gone. Let me explain. Take Indiana 6 million people. When a kid thinks about where to play what they grew up with matters. Now Indiana has some comp from Purdue and N Dame but can organically get 7 or the 40 possible recruits. Nebraska produces 5 decent kids a year. Nick Henrich Garrett Nelson wouldnt be starting at Indiana. They just wouldnt. Frost probably didnt understand how hard it is to get decent players on the field in Lincoln. How did we do it in the Big 8? Running QB easier to find. We told a RB he was going to get 25 carries a game. A lighter load competition wise. All that is long lomg gone. We need to go to the Mountain West. The Big Ten doimg away with divisions and adding 2 LA schools just makes it worse

I would venture to say that no team in the history of college football has taken a bigger fall than Nebraska has, even more than Tennessee. Has it even hit you that the Huskers haven't won a single CONFERENCE championship THIS millennium! Yes the Huskers got to the 2001 title game after getting blown out by Colorado in the Big 12 title game, but the Huskers should have stayed home that night.
So anyways, Nebraska has had six losing seasons in a seven year period, or seven in an eight year period if they have a losing season in 2022. Husker nation just needs to sit down, relax and let the next coach have a 5+ year period to COMPLETELY demolish EVERYTHING about the current program and rebuild EVERYTHING new. The fans just need to keep quiet and let the process play out as there is A LOT of work that needs to be done. If the fans can stay out of the way and have zero expectations over the first five years, then the new coach can get a long term plan in place.
Well isn't that what happened with Scott Frost? No, it's not. Frost was a coach who had short term success. Who knows what would have happened had he stayed at UCF, but had the Huskers not been so impulsive to hire one of their folk heroes and realized that he was WAY in over his head to coach a broken Husker program. He took an already dead program and drove it six feet under.
Nebraska needs to hire the best coach they can get who has a resume of rebuilding programs, and no, Lance Leipold isn't leaving Kansas for Nebraska. You need to hire someone that was never associated with the Husker program because if you do, all you are doing will hiring a coach with the same tainted mindset that's caused unrealistic expectations in Lincoln.
It could be ANOTHER rough 5 to 10 years for the Huskers. But then again, Kansas turned it around in less than a season after hiring Leipold, so in theory, the Huskers could do it too, they they have to get out of their own way. And remember that Nebraska isn't the attractive place to coach at like it was 21+ years ago.
Get national titles, conference championships, division titles and even winning games out of your list of expectations. The Huskers have to start by dominating the line of scrimmage and then work their way up to winning the series, the halves and then the games. Unrealistic expectations are scaring potential coaches away, so STOP talking about National titles and "Is Nebraska back?".

Putting Nebraska in "Tier 2" may be a bit of a stretch sadly. It could be, but hasn't been lately. The reason ole miss or usc turned it around so quickly is because they can pull players from the transfer portal and jump recruiting ranks at the same time. Doing that allows talented coaches to turn over their roster very quickly. I don't see a 1 or 2 year turn around at nebraska as being possible. I think you can get to 7 or 8 wins after 2 or 3 years, but more than that is wishful thinking.

Repeat after me…NEPOTISM. Frost snd trev are homies. Trev didn’t want to fire his bro. And that’s why he let him go before the contract declined like a sry I have to fire you buddy here’s an extra 7 million to say I’m sry, see you at the fishing hole next Saturday. Nebraska football is just one giant 90s reunion and that’s the problem. The program has been stripped to its frame and needs to be rebuilt on a new foundation and forget about all the legends and greats and trophies it needs to get a new identity

It’s possible but frost rescheduled his contract last year to take less money…

Connor, we have a chance to hire a rockstar… every legendary coach was, at one time, an unknown commodity… we have the resources to make it happen! In Trev we trust!
