  • Finally get around to installing the carburetor and intake. A bit of tuning was required afterwards with the main jet, idle jet, and slide needle.

Making that old Sachs engine go really fast is actually almost impossible. That cylinder is intentionally designed to be absolutely awful: Hardly any cooling fins, everything's thin as paper and cylinder and head is all in one piece.
I was riding and tuning Mopeds in the early 80s and I had the pleasure to ride a wide variety of brands. The easiest to tune were the Italian brands like Minarelli and Garelli, but in order to go really *really* fast you'd want to turn to Zündapp or Kreidler. Those had just that much more "flesh" where it counted, you could port the intake, exhaust and transfer ports to insane sizes, run huge carburetors and turn in excess of 14k RPM. Spare parts were plentiful and reasonably priced. Oh yes, those were the days...

Sure, all the parts were from treatland. I got a Dellorto SHA 18mm carb, athena exhaust header, Athena 70cc kit, VM18 intake, and a bunch of carb jets, among a couple other small bits.

*This is a lot of work and expense for so little results...at the end of it all, it's still a 'Mo-ped'* ( *My '97 'Tomos' was sheer torture to ride from the constant vibration from that damned 2-stroke engine...as well as being very 'twitchy' at speed and unable to cope with 'bumps/ruts/and pot-holes' at all* ) *The only reason I bought it in 2000 was because I needed transportation to work besides taking 2-buses...and couldn't pay the insurance on a cheap car in Las Vegas* *I bought an '08 Honda "Metropolitan" scooter I saw on 'CL' for $1150 almost three-years ago that already had all the 'performance mods' done without tampering w/the engine or factory-exhaust...and it's flawless to start and ride!* ( *42mph w/a 220lb. rider!* ) *I'll NEVER buy another 'moped' again...because they're too much 'pain in the ass' to ride* ) *With the little Honda, all I hear is "Where did you get that and how much was it and how fast is it?" and people don't believe it when I tell them it's an '08 with just over 10-thousand miles on it!* *I've seen new 'Mopeds' here on 'Tube with a gear-box that can be engaged with a slide-switch and equipped w/a 4-stroke 72cc cyl. head and piston...so it's basically a version of the Honda 'Passport'* ( *You disengage the pedals when using the gearbox and clutch...so it's really a 'small displacement motorcycle' then and NOT a 'Moped' at all* )

That's part of the fun of riding, granted it does get tiring. This moped was used mostly for commuting to my college campus a couple miles down the road- the extra 10 mph gain was essential for keeping up with traffic. I would have driven my car in if I was eligible for a commuter pass- either way, cost me a bit but still a good amount of fun.

*Sorry...but the 'fun' part never occurred for me...in fact, after an hour of 'getting around' my fingertips and the tip of 'Mr. Happy' were tingling...and not in a good way!* ( *maybe the 'Tomos' was a poor choice...the vibrations were so bad it actually cracked the fuel-outlet at the underside of the tank...your machine has very similar one from what I saw* ) *I had an actual 'carpet-tack' give me a rear flat while I was at 'top-end'...and I should have gotten an 'Award' of some kind for not getting spilled...it was "Mr. Toads' Wild Ride" for real!* *The wheels were very heavy on this model (all steel w/ribs) and that moped did it's best to throw me off, jogging from side-to-side , and didn't dare to use the brakes, just let the engine compression slow it* *My "Metropolitan' had 'bald spot' on the rear wheel that was so bad it actually exposed the cords and the air came out right in the middle of what looked like a 'locked-wheel skid' only that never happened...and I had just done a 'polish' maybe two days before and NEVER SAW any 'bad spot'...I was doing 42mph and the little Honda handled it like a champ when the tire went...just some rear 'squiggles' and that's all...no loss of control at all!* *I even managed to limp home at a walking speed and I had no worries over ruining the tire or the expensive ( $100 ea.) wheel because there's no way in hell that tire will separate from the rim-bead, not with 4-heavy-gauge steel threads on both sides!* ( *Flats on this machine require a proper 'tire-machine' at a shop to unseat and install new, exactly the same as a car tire...something I didn't know before* ) *Am I 'anti-Moped now? NO...but I wouldn't trade the 'Metro' for one...no matter how much 'faster' it is than my scooter*

Gerry Nightingale if a moped vibrates as bad as you’re describing then something is very wrong with it ( ball bearing, crankshaft, Motor mounts, etc ). Mopeds usually ride quite smooth and the part about no suspension is because the suspension was probably stuck because you didn’t maintain it.

    • @gerrynightingale9045

@@einhundertfunfzig4919 *Think whatever you like, but YOU DON'T get to tell me "I didn't maintain right" or any other
damned thing about a machine I OWNED AND RODE FOR 3-THOUSAND MILES!*
*The '97 'Tomos' was in 'mint condition' with less than 200-miles on it when I bought it in 2000 for $850 in cash because I was desperate for transportation and wanted something I didn't have pay 'more' for in insurance, title- fees, license-plates because in Nevada you didn't need any of that for a 50cc moped*
*I was too heavy for it at over 200lbs. and the suspension couldn't deal with it, or the saddle which practically
crushed with my ass on it!*
*Speaking of 'ass' YOU CAN KISS MINE!* *I kept that machine PERFECT all the time and it made no difference at all with the constant vibration from 'wide-open throttle' 90% of the time*
*2-stroke mopeds VIBRATE a lot at high revs compared to 4-strokes of the same size*
*'TOMOS' just wasn't designed for a 'full-size American adult' and that was the main problem*

You are right in that mopeds are not designed with people who weigh more than 140-160 lbs really. It's a 50-80cc motor depending on the kit. If you weigh any more, 2-3hp won't carry you well and you should just jump to a motorcycle that's at least 250cc.

So that's your evaluation? After you made two separate videos we all watched. Your scientific conclusion is "It is really faster then before"!! That's what all your data tells you? Oh wait. There is no data. No baseline of before the modification. And no after the modification data taken either. Just you telling us "It is really faster then before".
This is one of the saddest and most disappointing video on moped mod's I have seen yet. And that's saying a lot cause there is a lot of crap out there, but yours is at the top of the heap.
