Ranking The Moral Alignment In Every God Of War Game

  • Now we're on to the third and final in the series of moral alignment videos that I plan on doing. Today I'm going to go through each and every game in the God of War series with the exception of betrayal, with one single moral alignment chart that assigns character morality on a scale from lawful good to chaotic evil, and assigning each spot to whoever I believe best embodies that particular moral alignment in that game. Granted, not every god of war game has a hell of a lot of characters, so some of these will require a bit of barrel scraping. But with that said this is the moral alignment chart for every God of War game.

6:24 The Last Spartan is legit one of the most underrated characters in the entire franchise. He was eternally loyal to Kratos, went through absolute hell to change Sparta's fate, and even managed to hold his own for a moment against the God of War himself in a pitch-black room. Dude needs way more respect.

Plus, he went through to that point faster than Kratos despite the latter being a god, and having his gear, and the former being mortal. That takes mad skill and tons of gumption

I would argue that by Ragnarok, Atreus is unquestionably Chaotic Good. While I get why Freya took the spot, I feel that by Ragnarok, Atreus was now fully capable of his own moral compass, and it never once truly strayed away from good. Sure, he was with Odin for a long time, but it was all because he genuinely thought Odin could offer him insight and answers, so he could understand himself and not hurt anyone he loved. He’s chaotic by nature of being all over the place, flipping between which side he’s part of the whole game (and being Loki), but he’s unquestionably good in my eyes.
If anything, I would have put Freya in Chaotic Neutral for the sole reason of the first half, in which her vengeful nature made her only crave Kratos’ blood. If Kratos’ desire for revenge and his disregard for anything other than said revenge slides him down on the moral slider, I’d argue that Freya spending so much time in a similar mentality ultimately balances her out to Chaotic Neutral, even if she’s ultimately Good.
Also, I would have put the actual Tyr, the one found post-game, as the True Neutral by virtue of not getting the chance to do anything.

So Kratos in the first game was EVIL

He lost his mother, for his early childhood he’s had a cold father, he becomes a murder and now hold an entire race of people on his shoulders he isn’t even 18 yet. He is a kid and ironwood really shows that in my opinion and I’m happy the game slowed down to show it

I agree that it's alright on a first playthrough but even then it's a bit too long. What makes it even worse is that they constantly tell you that it's almost over, when in reality it's only the beginning. You know it's bad when even the story people don't like it. On a repeat playthrough however, it is criminally boring. Why would you want to sit through 2 hours of cutscenes and walking when you already know what's gonna happen? God of War is a game with lots of replayability, and thus a lot of people play it countless times, but having 2 hours of basically holding the stick forward completely kills that replayability. That's why Ragnarök is probably the least replayed GoW game because nobody wants to go through Ironwood and the other Atreus missions ever again. This could have been completely solved by making these missions skippable on repeat playthroughs, but of course not because Santa Monica needs you to experience their magnificent story a billion times over, something which is made abundantly clear by the fact they're taking 4-5 months adding cutscene skipping, a feature that almost every game has on launch, many games even letting you skip short cutscenes, puzzles and boring gameplay sections. I know I just wrote an entire novel about a very inconsequential topic, but as someone who wasted hundreds of hours of his life playing Atreus missions, I simply needed to get my frustrations out.

Oh right, Ascension was a game that existed. I wonder if the game would've been better received on the Vita. It's a prequel, which would've fit with the other two and the...lower stakes of it all, I guess, would've fit too, essentially filling in bits and pieces of more backstory. And the online portion probably would've been nicer playing with people in the same room, which handhelds allow us to do.
All in all, I love these alignment videos. I hope we get more in the future, if you're up to it. If you're not feeling it, then no worries. I'd rather get a video you're passionate about over something done just to please the fans or algorithm.

I really liked this concept, is very entertaining to know the perspective of a person on each characters. Although a lot of them were spot on, I will say the Ragnarok one is when the moral compass fell off.
Being so many characters in Ragnarok, putting Bergeil in neutral instead of characters like Jormungandr (again), Angerboda, Sif, Skoll and Hati or the Norns even doesn't make sense. Also understand that animal cruelty is horrible but in no way that's more evil than the character who killed Ymir, massacred and tame the Vanir, order to kill all the giants in Midgard, lied to all his people, slaved Mimir and Tyr, killed his own son, etc. and then put him in Lawful Evil. In that case he should be in Chaotic Evil and Heimdall in Lawful Evil because yes, he is an asshole but he does only what Odin tell him to do, he's just a weapon to him.
This is what I think. I would replace other characters like Gryla to put more important characters and changed Freya and Loki's position. I wonder also why you didn't put Tyr in the list knowing his appearence in Valhalla. Nontheless, I think it was a good list.

I understand the point, but it should not surprise Kratos that his son does the same thing he did, and that he indirectly "taught" him what it was basically to hide secrets for good reasons, not only him, for this game Atreus also knew that His mother also did that, someone he admired a lot, so he probably thought why not me too? Even Freya knew that, if you do the mission to free the first hafgufa in Alfheim, and no.
The information that was really classified, such as Heimdall or the ghallarhorn issue, was discussed in private. Several things (like Garm or Tyr) did not matter to discuss in private if when he went to Asgard he realized that Odin already knew about those things, or with Freya as well and in that case he was not even present on that topic.

If I remember correctly the "fire" that Prometheus gifts the humans isn't only actual fire but rather the ability to make it by giving them freedom of thought. Also supposedly he and Zeus created the humans to begin with.

I would think Hera would be the True Neutral of God of War 3. She clearly doesn't like what Kratos is doing to the world, but she's not in Zeus' corner either for fairly obvious reasons. And really, how wrong is it to try and kill Kratos at this point? (Get used to me using that logic.)
GoW3 Athena would be Chaotic Neutral because she's absolutely knowingly coaxing Kratos into destroying Olympus just so she can take over the decimated remains. She might be egotistical in thinking only she is fit to guide the world and every other potential rival needs to die, but she has the intent of bettering the world, potentially becoming a tyrant (i.e. Lawful Evil) in the future. Funny thing about being Chaotic is that, once you take out the previous Lawful, you basically become the law through a logical combination of "might makes right" and "you break it, you buy it".
I'm not sure I'd put Pandora on the Lawful side, more True Good than Lawful. If anything, basically being gung-ho to put out the Flame of Olympus, knowing full well what it meant for Zeus, certainly wouldn't make her lawful. She seems somewhat ambivalent of who wins between Zeus and Kratos, having far more concern with doing what's right. The corrupting evil afflicting Zeus is her true target, while Zeus is more or less a victim of the corruption. The corruption is why the fight between the two even happened in the first place, and it's that evil which Pandora truly sought to destroy, not Zeus per se.
I'd make the Lawful Good of GoW3 Poseidon, actually. He's very blatantly on Zeus' side, though more because of an awareness of what Zeus' death means than any endorsement of his brother's evil acts. He knows full well that Zeus is going down a dark path, even though you don't find that out until long after his death. Even then, the worst Poseidon ever does is fight Kratos and the titans, and self-defense shouldn't count against Poseidon's morality.
Hercules is an alright pick for GoW3's Lawful Neutral, though I'd also give contention to Hades. All the suffering and torment Hades causes is meted out as just by the Three Judges, who are arguably about as lawful as Zeus himself, if not more. Hades seems content to do his job, taking issue with Kratos simply because of how Kratos wronged him before, even stating as much before their fight. It's not as personal to him as it might seem. Just because Hades is assigned to deal with the assholes of the Greek afterlife, Kratos _very_ much included, it doesn't necessarily make Hades a bad guy, if not necessarily a good one.

In my opinion, Kratos should’ve been titled as Neutral Evil for God Of War III, Athena should’ve been Chaotic Evil for that game, and Gaia should’ve been True Neutral, but a very bad True Neutral.

Gow - Kratos is chaotic evil, he doesn't respect laws and is willing to harm innocents to accomplish his revenge. The ends do not justify the means.
Gow2 - Kratos is chaotic evil. He obeys no rules and murder whomever bothers him whenever he pleases. He has no moral qualms about anything.
Chains of Olympus - Neutral good. Here he is willing to sacrifice everything he cares about for the sake of others, he hasn't become evil yet.
Gow 3 - Kratos is still chaotic evil. He acts like a complete idiot for the entire game and most of his actions are done out of spite.

I know that spot is already occupied by Odin, but I'd say Heimdall is lawful evil. Yes he's a bully and a massive douchebag, but he literally works for Odin, the guy that runs the joint, and he never disobeys him. He follows and enforces the law in Asgard, even if his methods of doing so are questionable at best. Sindri even calls the mistletoe arrows "straighter than Heimdall", meaning that Heimdall is obsessed with the rules, even if he thinks that knowing people's intentions gives him the right to be an asshole.

I feel like the Fates could've been a better spot for True Neutral in Ragnarok. They were a bit dickish towards Kratos, Freya and Mimir, but they're really just observers of Fate and pointing out how before Ragnarok itself their lives were so predictable as to be told through prophecies. Not to mention they still told Kratos about Heimdall which was their main goal in the first place.
