That's the actual problem there. I don't mind history movies having nothing to do with actual history; I mean who ever expects accuracy needs to go to the dictionary and look up the word "FICTION". But it should be in the purpose of telling a more compelling, fun, entertaining and awesome STORY. Yeah nobody in their RIGHT MIND believes Moses actually split the fkken Red Sea, but that scene in the movie is AMAZING; I can only imagine how it was received at the time. If you however alter the history to give us a LESS entertaining version... WHY???? Oh yeah, to virtue signal, race bait and MODERNISE.
That is the case with many historical films actually. The figures they depict more often than not have a much more interesting story than they show us. Yet they choose some Hollywood tropes and archetypes, and they ruin the fun and the historical accuracy. When you actually go and read history, you soon realize that vast majority of fantasy writers, even good ones, pale in comparison. Also, there are several continents, much bigger than Europe, that we don't have any big films/series about. Where are my Inca/Maya/Aztec epics? Where is subsaharan Africa? Why are there no films and series about North America pre-colonization? You think it is boring?! Don't even get me started on Asia - they had empires and battles in antiquity that would make Europe pale in comparison. We are recycling a few old topics, and we are screwing them up with tropes instead of telling them as they were and making them even more entertaining. And Metatron often cites historical figures and sources to show how that can be done. He did one when that 'documentary' about Cleopatra was made. He made a whole video about a strong warrior queen from Africa, just south of Egypt and from those times (and who, unlike Cleopatra, WAS black), who's story is basically a House of Cards meets Game of Thrones type of story of war and political intrigue. But, did they choose her? Nope, let's have black Cleopatra instead.
I agree, history is filled with such rich story, couldve had a movie where i forget the names of these individuals but that guy who crossed the mountains with elephants and just decimated the romans for years on end but eventually was defeated due to lack of resupply and being cut off from his allies, that would be a pretty cool movie, and yes i know hollywood would take some liberties to make it movie like but still, way better than race swapping for sure

I have a genuine question. Why would you want "a historical accuracy checkup" on a movie not classified as a "documentary"? I always found that completely irrational; in the sense that movies are declared as fiction, and thus are absolutely not obliged to be historically or in any way accurate. As long as a movie respects it's own inner logic (ie you don't have 1 scene in which swords penetrate armours like they were butter and then the next scene in which swords can't possibly penetrate any armour...); I fail to see what the problem is. even with the cast; I mean if the Chinese decide to make a movie about the Roman Empire and cast a 100% Chinese cast... I mean of course they would; and why not?
@@codinghusky5196 I have a genuine question. Why are you asking me this question if you already seem to have your own answer to the question? lol Second, I never said anything about historical accuracy checkups for movies or documentaries. So why are you not only assuming that is what I meant, without asking for clarification at the very least to et further information. With that said, even a movie classified as "fiction" should still be held to historical accuracy standard. Yes, I think everyone knows there is going to be some "Hollywood" installed into movies to spice things up and make a movie more interesting, like smashing scenes. However, what is super ridiculous is when they go out of their way to change Historical facts that don't need to be changed or are often changed simply for political shock value, like the did in the Anne Boleyn tv show by race swapping Anne Boleyn to Black, when everyone knows she was not only White, but SUPER White with red hair. This is no different than making a Shaka movie and putting in a White actor to play Shaka. Except for the complete hypocritical and double standard meltdown that would occur. They would start destroying their own cities over such a thing. lol Before you say it, yes, in the past this often occurred with White actors and Actresses, but it shouldn't have and two wrongs don't make a right. We aren't trying to start a revenge tour for cinema. Cinema shouldn't take steps backwards out of revenge. What happened...happened and we should always learn and keep moving forward. There are many other reason even fictional movies should be held to a standard, that was just one bi example. It is okay to Hollywood up a movie in places, but historical accuracy should still remain VERY important in places where it need not be changed like a Black Cesar or a White Martin Luther King Jr.. One other quick example might be them adding in a SA scene when there is NO historical proof such a thin occurred. There is of course many small reasons as well, but I would be here for weeks, at least, trying to go through them all. You really need to do some self reflection on this one. No doubt you yourself could come up with situations where historical accuracy is important even in fictional movies. If your instant response to that is no way, then why are we even having this discussion and let us just agree to disagree and move on! We will pretend like you never even asked such a silly question! HAHA
@@codinghusky5196 Also, sure the Chinese can do whatever da faq they want! lol However, in the Western media we are trying to make sure new standards are created to deal with their hypocrisy. Like the idea it is okay to race swap a Black person into a White person, but the opposite would cause Minneapolis to be tore up from the floor up! Same goes for gender swapping a female to male then vice versa, because the versa would be sexist while a female into male would be no big deal. Either make sure both are happening (occurring) or stop both from happening. Make it across the board fair and we the audience or customers are 100% allowed to hold them accountable like we have been and it is finally working. Just be fair or at the very least, consistent! lol Hollywood (the West) has dug their own grave in this subject. They created one standard and the majority of people do not like it, so now they are being held accountable. China though, is not the West. Other countries or "woods" are free to set their own standards
Oof. Imagine the actual historical figure may have been black but was definitely never a slave... and then you make hi. Black just si you can have the "I was once owned.." line to make us all roll our eyes even more.
This section of the stream was definitely Metatron's time to shine. I'm so glad he finally got a chance to speak his mind on something he's actually interested in. Because it was so awkward to see him just nod along in silence when everyone else has something to yap about.
Caracalla’s design was enough to turn me away from this movie….. That, and Pedro Pascal Theoretically, Caracalla could’ve been portrayed almost as a tragic villain, believing that his ruling the empire like a military camp (Sgt Hartman style) is actually good
My favorite nit picky historical inaccuracy was when Macrinus tells Lucius that he served with his grandfather Marcus Aurelius during his African campaigns and enjoyed reading his famous Meditations. I always thought that the Marcomanni were accustomed to colder climates than North Africa and that the Meditations was more of a daily inspirational journal for Marcus not meant for wide circulation much less publication. Color me shocked!
Metatron throwing fact-bombs while being at the middle of the whole gang is awesome, like a true Roman General talking to his based troops and Shad as his right hand ⚔️
10:15 I don’t agree that it’s wise to give audiences some measure of what they expect. If a film about Ancient Rome gave us painted statues, historically accurate battles, and characters that were more reflective of their documented nature, that could be a fantastic movie.
So many great stories from actual history waiting to be told. Metatron does it sometimes on his channel while talking about some subject or debunking bs, always fascinating
Great listening to Metatron. I toured Pompeii years ago with a friend who is an art historian working for the Metropolitan Museum. She said that about Pompeii also, the outside of the buildings would have been painted, and their inside walls would have colorful paintings and floors colorful mosaic designs. One of the rooms we toured still had the remains of a painted wall mural.

To be fair, Gladiator movies are no more historical dramas than James Bond flicks are realistic depictions of Cold War espionage. They're there to entertain, not to educate; Gladiator I was historical nonsense too.
Yeah, I've got a degree in Classics (Republican Rome is my bag) and films like this, books like Song of Achilles, give me stuipidity-induced hives. The first film, I ditched work to see it opening day. By ditched, I mean that friends helped me sneak out of the building through a window so I wouldn't get caught. Gladiator II makes me think I'd rather clean out a kids ball pit with my bare hands.
Also the PYRAMIDS in Lucius back story were depicted ruined in the state they look today, back then they still had most of their white limestone casing
What’s funny is sometimes what we accept as accurate (like the white marble) is completely wrong, and something we think can’t have been real is actually accurate or at least happened a few times historically.
Just as they undermined Anakin’s uniqueness by making everyone powerful in the force from birth, they undermined Commodus as the emperor who fright in the coliseum
“Macrinus was a Moor by birth, from Caesarea, and the son of most obscure parents, so that he was very appropriately likened to the ass that was led up to the palace by the spirit; in particular, one of his ears had been bored in accordance with the custom followed by most of the Moors. Bur his integrity threw even this drawback into the shade.” “…Luckily for Macrinus, he would rise above his low class birth and receive training as a lawyer.” ~ Roman History, Cassius Dio.
@@SPAMusubiHalau Don't you mean he was a Moop? (For Seinfeld fans). Actually the term Moor in how we use it is derived from Middle Ages and is an extremely fuzzy term. It certainly is misplaced when describing people during the time period in question. That translation you quote isn't a good one. Although the term Dio uses is Maurus, how he is using it refers to a specific geographical and ethnic designation. It is for the indigenous North African peoples who lived west of Carthage, in and around Roman Mauretania. In other words, the Berber peoples of North Africa. So calling Macrinus a Berber is accurate. That is what a proper translation ought to use. In addition, if you know anything about Roman Historians of the period they will alter history according to their ideology or politics. Dio was a senator, so any one, especially an Emperor, who did not respect the senate, Dio would not be kind to them in his writing. He certainly would disparage the person such as their upbringing and familial linage.
When I heard about it my buddy and I were chatting and were like alright so it's about Lucius (that much was already out) and they are absolutely going to make him Maximus's son. If you can guess the plot that fast it's usually going to be bad.
There was NO NEED to make Rome diverse, they invaded ALL THE WAY to England, Into North Africa and almost got to China, there are stories of Chinese travellers going to Rome.
8:00 You don't even need other approaches to the city. The movie itself tells us the attackers control the whole surrounding territory, and are being led by a man who doesn't want unnecessary violence. They shouldn't have assaulted AT ALL. It's the prefect recipe for an attrition siege. Which was how most were done anyway.
Really enjoyed Metatron's contribution in this clip. Wasn't aware of him before this, but he really adds an excellent dimension to this particular discussion. I vote to have him on any movie review episode that sits within his era(s) of expertise. Great showing 👍
About colorful statues and temples - AAA movie by well known director is exactly the movie that should have pushed the historic authenticity. Yes, audience would be puzzled for a second expecting white marble, then they'd learn, then a new standard would be set and period pieces would have to paint it to match our knowledge of history. Maybe it would require a 4s pan shot on an obviously fully painted statue to put a dot on the "i" that it's intentional, but it could definitely work. Especially in such a big budget movie that can afford so many sets and top level CGI.

Why are you asking me this question if you already seem to have your own answer to the question? lol
Second, I never said anything about historical accuracy checkups for movies or documentaries.
They would start destroying their own cities over such a thing. lol
Before you say it, yes, in the past this often occurred with White actors and Actresses, but it shouldn't have and two wrongs don't make a right.
HAHA
@@codinghusky5196 Also, sure the Chinese can do whatever da faq they want! lol
However, in the Western media we are trying to make sure new standards are created to deal with their hypocrisy. Just be fair or at the very least, consistent! lol
Hollywood (the West) has dug their own grave in this subject. They created one standard and the majority of people do not like it, so now they are being held accountable.
China though, is not the West. Other countries or "woods" are free to set their own standards
I love that you brought on a history guy for this.
I love how all my fav youtubers are coming together for this
Metatron, Critical drinker and nerdrotic together??? Needed this
Gladiator 2 already spoiled itself by existing.
Now, THAT'S a true Avengers zoom call lol. Welcome to the table Metatron
Oof. Imagine the actual historical figure may have been black but was definitely never a slave... and then you make hi. Black just si you can have the "I was once owned.." line to make us all roll our eyes even more.
Once Metatron enters the chat, you know shit just got real!
This section of the stream was definitely Metatron's time to shine. I'm so glad he finally got a chance to speak his mind on something he's actually interested in. Because it was so awkward to see him just nod along in silence when everyone else has something to yap about.
Nerdrotic, drinker and metatron together is amazing, would never have guessed this last year
Metatron 🇮🇹🇮🇹👍
Metatron with TheDrinker and Nerdtronic in the same room 😱😱😱
Now we talkin’
Well, wasn't expecting a history class watching FNT. Got one and it was amazing.
Came for the Megatron, stayed for the heresy.
Caracalla’s design was enough to turn me away from this movie….. That, and Pedro Pascal
Theoretically, Caracalla could’ve been portrayed almost as a tragic villain, believing that his ruling the empire like a military camp (Sgt Hartman style) is actually good
My favorite nit picky historical inaccuracy was when Macrinus tells Lucius that he served with his grandfather Marcus Aurelius during his African campaigns and enjoyed reading his famous Meditations.
Metatron is cool
I only know him from his religious videos. Kinda surprising to see him with nerdrotic lol
@@jgobrohoHe's mates with Shad if I remember right. Maybe Shad suggested to the others to bring him on.
A fan in chat was correct though. I forgot exactly what they said, but something like.
"Metatron is way to sophisticated to be on this group". Made me lol when Nerdrotic agreed.
Dude, Metatron bringing the first-hand account level historicity. 🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯
This is both an unexpected, but also unsurprising crossover.
I love the nerd talk. Amazing having Metatron here.
Alright, i am a Fan of Metatron now. 👍
Yay
Also the PYRAMIDS in Lucius back story were depicted ruined in the state they look today, back then they still had most of their white limestone casing
Actually fun fact there is more time between Rome and Ancient Egypt than between us and Rome today! So that part at least is fair, if not much else
When several youtubers you happen like, all the sudden start hanging out together... that's a sign we're all subjects of the freaking algorithm
Love Nerdrotic, but today mainly here for my man Metatron! Great collab!
'What did it get wrong?' -- Biggest mistake: it was made.
So, the historical source material that the movie takes inspiration of is more interesting and cooler than the movie itself...
Guys like Shad and Metatron should be consulting in the writers room and not doing post mortem movie analysis.
How did the critics actually like this movie? I about walked out when they had sharkiators.
So Ridley Scott fecks up another historic movie, great I'll give it a miss.
Cheers for saving me money👍🍻
All the names in the movie sound like Turkish deserts
Thank you to Nerdrotic for introducing me to disparu and drinker along with their channels. Good stuff.
I watch both even when I'm not that interested in the shows they are reviewing. They are both very entertaining.
Macrinus wasn’t from humble origins, he was massively wealthy but not from a senatorial family
Metatron makes mistakes. He isn't an actual historian. However, to his credit he will correct mistakes that he makes.
When I saw drinker and Metatron on the same cast I was so excited! Please invite him to anything related to historical shows and other stuff.
Trump gets re-elected and Metatron joins the Gary Gang.... Fücking WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's fascinating to learn some of the actual history.
Cant wait for Shad to break all this down
As iv said before Gladiator was watchable because its a copy of a old film The Fall of The Roman Empire 1964
Seeing Metatron in the CENTER of the FNT brings enormous joy to my heart.
Watching Bella Ramsey do squats on top of Elliot Page would be a better plot!
The colloseum was flooded with SWEET water from the Tiber, the sharks are SALT water fishes.
The real question is, who the f thought this movie wasn't going to be a shit show? 😅
When I heard about it my buddy and I were chatting and were like alright so it's about Lucius (that much was already out) and they are absolutely going to make him Maximus's son. If you can guess the plot that fast it's usually going to be bad.
Dayum, I don't know this Metatron chap but he knows his stuff! Awesome
Love it. You learn so much from Met and Shad.
This is a 1st for Metatron,correct??
I've never seen him here. Sweet either way.
Which was how most were done anyway.
calling in a 500kg bomb is what a metatron fact check is
Really enjoyed Metatron's contribution in this clip. Wasn't aware of him before this, but he really adds an excellent dimension to this particular discussion. I vote to have him on any movie review episode that sits within his era(s) of expertise.
Great showing 👍
I can’t believe metatron and Nerdrotic have done a crossover. This is something I never expected to see 😂
What a lineup! Magnificent!
I want more Metatron and drinker looking at historic movies
As Italian and history buff, Metatron deserves a bronze statue in full color.
Love Metatron with Nerdrotic !
I love that you had Metatron on the show. Brilliant well done, please have him on more, the man is a legend.
They should have just made it a story of Tigris of Gaul, the famous gladiator Maximus defeated.
Bringing Metat into the Nerdrotic universe is like seeing planets aligning holy shit
Gonna have Metatron saying "kalla kalla" in my head for a while now
It's so cool to see Metatron on the show I hope this isn't a one time thing
BLOOD ON THE COLOSSEUM FLOOR
...never gonna financially recover from this, anymore
