Hi Jeff! This was very interesting to say the least. I'm surprised that all of the plants you showed would be so cold hardy. I appreciate you taking the time to film this. Thank you so much for sharing!
Great options! I've stuck a few "houseplants" or patio plants that got too big in the garden and have returned reliable for the last several years! Tradescantia 'nanouk', Ctenanthe setosa, and Maranta leuconeura are a few that keep coming back every year here (Zone 8b - deep south).
Starting off with a Bang! Triostar?!Dang! I planted some in spring and I haven’t dug them up… maybe I won’t?! A plant that I’ve been surprised by its hardiness is Pygmy Date Palm. I kept my original roebellini outside that the pot was too heavy to muscle in, and it defoliated @ 19°F… granted I didn’t know what spear pull was back then, but 🤷🏼♂️
haha, I only made the suggestion for the Chlorophytum because I thought it would look nice in the shade garden but I'm glad it branched out into a video for you. Seems people liked it.
I’ve tried many houseplants here in 8b/9a Louisiana, and many return. Even after very harsh winters, I’ve had everything on your list (I have spider plants EVERYWHERE), peace lilies, rubber ficus, monstera, pothos, maranta, calathea zebrina, pilea cadierei, schefflera, yucca cane, and birds of paradise come back. Split leaf philodendron and sagos are common landscape material here. Majesty palms can push growth after a brief 19/20 degrees (not extremely cold hardy however). Aloe Vera and sanseieria will survive in the low 20s in my experience. They can both be root hardy above 20F. The only plants I have attempted to never survive a winter for me are hoya and croton.
I've had amaryllis bulbs come back year after year (close to a building), Zone 6b. I have been wondering about Fatshedera hardiness (cross of Fatsia japonica and Hedera helix). I've had the saxifrage out in the yard for 20+ years, it is so hardy!! I tried to keep an Osmanthus fragrans going outside but we had a sudden polar blast that killed it off.
Love Chinese fan palms & ability to handle cold weather. Fatsia japonica as well.
So glad you mentioned the fatsia! Can't believe i left them out!
Just what I needed. I am in 8a and have several of the plants mentioned. Thanks❤❤❤.
Great! Glad I could help!
Surprised to hear you're in the same zone as me! I thought you were somewhere warmer. Great info too, thank you 😊❤💚
Always a pleasure! Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestions!
i moved from SoCal to OKC and i’m kinda at a loss for what i can plant 🫤
👍🏾😉
Lots of nice plants for OKC! Sabals and trachys should do well there with minimal to protection.
@ thank you!

Who knows what else will surprise us over the years! If we can just have a normal winter without thise random 3 or 4 days of ridiculousness!

Pygmy Date Palm is a good one. They do take a bit of cold and they're much tougher than they're reputed to be!
Beautiful landscape

I was glad you mentioned it bc it's way cheaper than liriope and mondo grass! Will be spreading them around next spring.

Sounds like you have a lot of nice plants!
Have you ever tried a fatsia japonica? Im attempting one this year with a foam box in Buffalo NY 6b
Yes! I should have included them! They always die down to the ground for me and return in the spring. Covering them should help preserve some stem.
