Watching 30-40’s legit do things well is inspiring for the rest of us (who have real jobs and are not young dudes working at a gym). As a business owner - cheering those older age groups and making them look and feel important is great for the marketing of crossfit. Putting them someplace else says “you are shit who cares” to the people who really pay the bills - 30-40-50’s with money to spend on the expensive sport called crossfit
Agree with it all except the last one. Only counter I have is, how many times have you had a member tell you "damn coach I really didn't want to come today, but I'm glad I did, thank you." I do see your point, not all people are like that, and some don't wanna show, half ass the workout, and complain about half ass results....those ppl, yeah you can stay home or try something else you enjoy. Keep it up Hiller!
I think you actually agreed with the point then. Member didn't want to go in but then did. They didn't drive halfway and turn around, they didn't get to the gym and make an excuse to not do the workout. They "do" it... or "did" it lol
💯 I learned this from goggins haha you have a 10-miler scheduled but you really don’t want to do it so you tell yourself you’ll do an easy 5 miles just to get your ass running and then once you’re moving, you’re like eff that and put out
You know what Hiller..The first video I watched on your channel was of Beth. I was we could say a little butt hurt. Then I watched some more of your stuff, and who knew Hiller is a motivational speaker I needed. I think you changed the trajectory of my life, career and coaching(I'll be taking my L1 next month). This is the tv show bingable content that all the marketing gurus tell us we should be doing if we want cult following. From CrossFit to Hiller cult 💃 I'm here for it 😁
The shoe comment related to point 1 feels like an insane take. I wear dress shoes to work. I wear Romaleos to lift in. I wear Nanos to do metcons. I wear Hokas to run. Changing the brand of any one of those is not going to jeopardize my structural integrity when I’m used to wearing a variety of different footwear throughout my day anyway. Maybe if there was an accident at the glue factory and my foot was stuck in a Reebok all day for 6 years but that’s about it.
Watching a Hiller video is probably comparable to riding in one of those things that pilots ride on that spins around in a circle really really fast to test G force stamina………lol. This was a good one.
Look at the age of the Mr. Olympia winners since 1999. There have been winners over 40! Perhaps nobody wants to watch anyone over 30 do CrossFit. Hmmm?…Eyebrows bouncing…Hmmm?
@@Mr_Bob_LoblawIn terms of peak athletic performance in most sports, most athletes peak in their 20s. Sure we have exceptions like Lebron James or a Tom Brady, usually they are either physically gifted or got a good team of PTs. Bodybuilding is not a sport tho. Sure they can lift but flexing and showing muscles is different than running, lifting, or throwing.
I feel like your first point should be, “Don’t *constantly* change your routine.” Shoe brands redesign their shoes all the time and I can’t just stock dozens of pairs of one shoe to not change my routine. We do constantly varied because our body responds to change in routine. I think the actually point is don’t just follow what influencers promote, even if you also mention diet. Even diet should adjust based on goals, age, season, etc.
I’ve been doing crossfit for years, but I just started paying a lot more attention to the quality of my reps (using video) and realized my reps were not all legit. I recently did Murph and made sure that every rep was legit and it was way harder and my time is way worse than previous years so to Hillers point I finally have a real benchmark to work against and measure myself. I wish somebody would’ve told me that my reps sucked before. I doing this for everything now and I went backwards on my numbers but it will be worth it in the long run. Thanks Hiller!
Female athlete. Hormones dictate a lot for us. As Dr Sara Sims says “females are not small men”. Some days we have to try. But it always feels better after! I never regret my effort.
“Don’t change your routine” Been thinking bout this in relation to Bill and his Achilles injury. Genuinely raves about R.A.Ds, only wears R.A.Ds… Becomes an “Adidas Athlete” and then the first time he’s seen wearing them he pops his achillies off.
Been wearing those creepy toe shoes for over a decade….my body is one with my creepy toe shoes. Sorry to everyone that has to look at my ridiculous footwear choices 🤣. I do wear lifters when maxing out my Olympic lifts.
Andrew, great content, very creative. Appreciate the observations and humor weaved seamlessly. Keeping it light keeps our attention. No disrespect to the CrossFit community, but watching anyone workout, for extended periods of time, older or younger than 30, is boring. Even if they make it a competition, it's lackluster at best. No one goes into a gym and watches people workout. I've been working out for decades, been in scores of gyms and practice rooms as an athlete, Marine, coach, and fitness enthusiast. I've followed the CrossFit Games for over 15 years, and have watched a bucket load of training content. Despite a highly marketed Games competition, it's not compelling to watch people workout and grind their bodies into the dirt doing repetitive Olympic weightlifting movements, along with unnecessary gymnastic movements, and joint destroying heavy lifting and extreme endurance programming that is going to leave aging CrossFitters hobbling through their 40's and beyond. Without performance pharmaceuticals, designer diets, and anti-inflammatory protocols to boost recovery, muscle and strength gains, and fend off the downside of a culture of over training, CrossFit athletes would be smaller, weaker, and slower. In a fitness centered culture such as CrossFit it is perplexing why unsafe programming, along with a climate of heavier, faster, harder pervades. The performance drugs will leave lasting scars on althetes' lives, and the grinding workouts, will deplete their health and diminish their mobility and vitality as they age. I would love to be wrong but decades of similar results have been the byproduct of those that have gone before you in a wide range of sports and extreme fitness pursuits. Keep up the great content. Your efforts to entertain and educate stand as a cut above.
and that bit about using PEDs before a certain amount of training maturity is soooooooo true. like it really isn’t worth it until you’ve come near your genetic potential. and that only comes after years under a barbell and eating right. that’s why old man strength is really thing.
Y'all think Hiller has like a notepad and pen in a drawer in his kitchen and when he gets out of the shower with some idea that popped into his head, he jots it down before he forgets? And then when that list of ideas reaches 10, he makes a video?
Someone needs to tell Hiller that 90% (probably higher) of the people doing Murph every year don’t come close to movement standards. Yeah, in CrossFit gyms too. And: “IT DOESN’T MATTER!” Because it’s not about them. Or you. Part 2: Vivek responds: How many multi-million dollar businesses have you built, Hiller? What’s your net worth? Are you even trying?
Today was the day I became a hiller fan. I’ve always glossed over your vids. I’ve always opted for the positive , romanticised vlogs of other content creators. They make me warm and fuzzy. The ones with the formats that are in and amongst the action and not sitting ranting at a screen. But, I’ve been missing out. You’ve just sat spitting bars for 16 minutes. The way you broke down the murph piece. You spoke every reason why murph has lost all meaning because of the way in which it is done by so many. I love this sport and rejected when people complain about it and rant ( which is how I once viewed you ). I realise now it is valid, we just want peace not problems 😂. Big up Hiller.
This all seems self explanatory to me Andrew. But I am around other people and hear and see them and they clearly don't get it. Or they don't get what it takes to be really fit. At least as far as CrossFit definitions and methodology. I think a lot of people don't get past the surface and feel like if they wear the gear and 'do' classes (however they make it through the workouts because it definitely is not RX) that that is all it takes. What good is wearing a whoop if you don't actually use the data and track the performance? Why change shoes if they don't help improve your full squat position or your single leg RDLs or rope climbs or whatever? The cheating thing is crazy to me as well. Why get everything together and drive to the gym and show up and half ass everything? It's like they say, don't show up at CrossFit and complain about having to do CrossFit. Run every last meter and do every rep! Yes it is scalable. It is Scalable so you can participate. But there should come a time as quick as you can get there that you kill yourself trying to do 95lb thrusters, you have to start manhandling the 50lb dumbbells, swinging the big KBs, doing actual pullups, etc. If all you try to do is what you can already do, then that is all you will ever be able to do. Ninja out.
Unfortunately I believe a lot of non-CrossFit gyms are doing poor Murph movements. At least they are attempting Murph, but they don’t have anybody showing them the proper techniques.
