  • Bassem El-Khodor, PhD, discusses magnesium, "the forgotten nutrient," and why it's so important. He goes through the reasoning behind the deficiency, the different types of deficiencies, and how this links to our biochemical processes. Dr. El-Khodor also addresses ways to test for low magnesium and steps to reverse the deficiency.

I've had worsening dysphagia since the age of 10. I'm 38 now and this year I couldn't swallow anything without chasing it with water or some other drink. I started taking a magnesium bis glycinate drink last week. Dysphagia cleared up the next day. I can easily swallow my food. A MIRACLE after a lifes worth of near choking to death moments.

Awesome that’s really great! And that type of magnesium is combined with the amino acid glycine…Which helps relax certain parts of the body, that can be tense without it, and should help with sleep. Happy you got help after sooo long!

Wow, I’ve noticed an increasingly worsening of having trouble swallowing food over the past year or so. I can’t eat without a big cup of water to help me swallow just about every bite of food. I’ve only just discovered a possible magnesium deficiency problem and have just started to take supplement. I’d be absolutely thrilled if my swallowing problem goes away. I was getting ready to make an appt for an ENT doc soon. Hopefully I won’t need to!

I was having heart palpitations for weeks. I had been on a “fitness health kick” so I was eating healthy whole foods, but reduced calories. I was also working out hard every day with weights, cardio and a steam room session, so sweating a lot daily. I thought I had a serious heart issue! After a little research, I started taking a magnesium supplement - my heart palpitations stopped the following day! Magnesium has a big effect on heart rhythm

Same with me. My heart palpitations and ectopic beats completely cleared up the day after taking magnesium citrate.
I will say however, that as a fellow fitness enthusiast, working out hard every day is far too much for your body. Especially if you include cardio in there too. You should really only workout hard like that 4 times a week at the most. Your body just won't have any time to recover.

What I found new for me from this podcast was additional information about how to convince people that because of modern farming they might be deficient, about the usefulness of magnesium from food, about methylation and excess homocysteine, and about the fact that removing cerebral spinal fluid may cause a brain deficiency if magnesium. My niece just had a sample removed and I need to inform her. I am sure there are others that have some important information to share in he topic as well.

Conversely, it uses Magnesium to trigger relaxation of the muscle, otherwise cramping may result) It’s the ratio of calcium to magnesium that is important to proper functioning. (Likewise, the body must maintain the proper ratio (balance) between Sodium and Potassium, else blood pressure will be adversely affected)

To the doctor or anyone who can explain: I take 250.mg of Magnesium Citrate at 6 am and again at 8 pm for leg cramps. Sometimes I take another 250 mg at 4 pm before driving home from work due to leg cramps. It seems to help, but during a very stressful day as a substitute teacher, grades 9-12, I developed a headache about noon, and within an hour started losing my balance and felt light headed. Could this have been a symptom of low magnesium levels since I had not been eating nearly as much magnesium rich food for about two weeks?

I had suffered a lot of severe cramps in my thighs so devastating I felt one day it will trigger a heart attack therefore I put my thinking cap on about the physiology of muscle contraction, which among other dietary & micro mineral elements relies on Calcium & Magnesium. The moment I put myself on Magnesium Supplement as far back as the 80s, I was free from these severe cramps & irregular heart beats.

The medical industrial complex's failure to properly research and diagnose and treat diet and microbiome and sleep and vital nutritional deficiency issues (including those related to Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 and Magnesium deficiencies as well as iatrogenic prescription medication usage) is a major reason why psychiatric iatrogenesis is a primary contributor to the third leading cause of death in the U.S. (which is iatrogenesis in general). If the U.S. spent just a fraction of the over $40 billion each year it spends just on iatrogenic psychiatric drugs alone, for properly researching the issues discussed in this and related UA-cam presentations we would probably, Lord willing, achieve an absolute revolution in medical efficacy improvement and iatrogenesis reduction.

Your Biz-school degree & medical training enable you to highlight this systemic weakness in our profit-oriented medical system.
Unregulated capitalism is objectively undemocratic. Rent-seeking & ever-more sophisticated ‘innovative’ customer traps are inherently unfair to govt officials & ordinary citizens alike.
And regardless of the nature of the political system, unregulated capitalism leads to oligarchs, monopolies, private quasi-governmental arrangements, a crowding-out of the public square, a corruption of historically non-profit private social organizations, dominance of labor, and ultimately, slavery.
As an MBA, you’re familiar with the methods by which ownership maintains control of the enterprise, including reporting controls that originated in feudal-era bureaucracies and, less-specifically, all the common law that originated in those times clothed in terms like the master-servant relation, the enforceable obligations of obedience embedded in contracts, and the web of laws & customs that favored property rights over individual welfare. (The rich & poor alike are prohibited from stealing bread, sleeping under bridges, and walking down the street without a plan).
Before a system becomes fatally corrupt, some combination of pitchforks, opposition movements & resulting political reform can ‘save’ capitalism (like the labor movement & The New Deal). The Chinese have been struggling with capitalist concentration for a decade or more; the outcome is not entirely clear & won’t be for many years.
To close out this overly-long comment, remember that when the capitalists adopted reporting controls from the bureaucrats, the bureaucrats continued to use them. So you know that, behind those stories about ‘disappeared’ people in Argentina, Chile, East Germany, etc. there was a secret police weekly report something like, “Enemies of the State identified this reporting period.”
      Merry Christmas, 2021, to all ! 🎄

Any chance of getting a copy of those slides? I really need to study them. I've had leg cramps as long as I can remember, and high blood pressure all my life. I was hospitalized with high blood pressure as a child- but when my mother was not in the room, it went down to normal. She was my primary abuser, and it would have been nice if someone used that knowledge to take me out of that home. My father also had a violent temper and my sister was born with a serious birth defect for which she was beaten every day. A totally messed up home. I have C-PTSD, some dissociation, and bad ADD as a result. For many years they treated my blood pressure by including Potassium, which I know now only made it all worse. I also have fibromyalgia. I take the max. magnesium and supplement with it externally. But still gets cramps and spasms that are very painful. I was doing well with Now brand Magnesium Transporters, which are pills. But I was getting low on them so I went back to KAL brand fizzy magnesium, Heart Healthy Magnesium Taurate because I thought my heart was most important. But the spasms are back. Oh, and I do have IBS. Lately it's been diahrea. And decades ago I took Calcium because I can't tolerate dairy. Oh and I have great difficulty consuming leafy greens because I don't have any molars to chew with. I use a vege blend powedred supplement but it's expensive so I don't use much. it probably would help if I used more. I'm not a doctor but I've been studying my health issues for a number of years and with the information on those slides to guide me I bet I can do more. I turned 70 years recently which to me is amazing. I have a lot of chemical sensitivities and was suicidal from the pain before the got the mercury removed from my teeth- I never imagined I'd live to see the year 2000, but I did and I'm still here. Are the slides on a website somewhere? Please.

I wanted to add some thing that I don’t think people really pay attention to, you need to do research if you’re on any prescription medication or even over-the-counter medication‘s, because a lot of them deplete you of certain vitamins and minerals and people think it’s caused from something else and it can be some medication you’re on like the type two diabetic medicine makes you low in B12 I never knew that I just found that out today so I started looking at all these prescriptions the doctors give to me but I don’t take but I was in the beginning till they started making me so sick I couldn’t handle it no more and then I ended up depleted and everything almost I was actually malnutrition from GMO prescription drugs and you can’t take the synthetic potassium like they were giving me when they put me on a water pill because it’s synthetic so I started eating pistachios they taste better anyway anyway make sure if you’re on any kind of medication over-the-counter or prescription, because over-the-counter drugs at one time were prescriptions like Benadryl it was one of the first anti-anxiety medication in a sleep aid and believe me they defeat you of something so don’t get all freaked out about everything if you get a cramp in your calf it could be caused from the medicine you took

This all very quickly resolved once I began to take a Mg-containing mineral supplement, so that, like the comment on dysphagia below, I suspect the double vison may have been a much less common manifestation of Mg deficiency. As a large animal veterinarian, I might add that both acute and chronic deficiencies of Mg have long been well recognized in farm animals, and particularly in stressed/lactating ruminants or those from whom calves have been recently removed...Most sincere thanks again to Dr El-Khodor!

For years I had Restless Leg Symptoms at night. This led to poor sleep, brain, fog, low mood etc. Drs had no idea but decided to take magnesium and wow! I now sleep at night.

Alcohol washes magnesium. Drink good quality mineral water after an alcohol drink to help boost magnesium
