I can't believe it's the first time I have seen this, or properly watchedl. Everytime I searched 'chris smither leave the light on live" I skipped. I am an idiot and this is an amazing performance
Going from one Chris Smither video to the next - getting my tenth day of COVID-19 blues off to a great start. Looking forward to the time when we can gather to enjoy another Chris Smither concert!
I doubt he ever thinks of it like this, but you can see the amount of reverence those younger musicians have for backing Chris up, especially on such a profound song. I like to think it's kinda the same feeling he had for seeing Mississippi John Hurt or Lightnin Hopkins at some folk club back in the 60's.
I first heard this song when I was in High school ,was a friend of mine from a suburban area near New York who played this song by himself ,so this song reminds my friendship with him, also now I’m getting stronger and also in the music business .about to release my first album.Music is beautifully connected each other .leave the light on for the singers who wanna sing a song
If I were young again, I’d pay attention - to that little-known dimension A taste of endless time It's just like water - it runs right through our fingers But the flavor of it lingers - Like a rich, red wine In those days we were single - we lived them one by one - Now we hardly see ‘em - they don’t walk - they run But I've got plenty left I’ve set my sight on Don’t wait up - Leave the light on - I’ll be - home - soon Short break I’ve never seen my life in such a hurry - But if I stop to worry - I get left behind It’s just a party, but you don’t get invitations - and there’s just one destination You better be on time for years we rhymed in couplets - And we sang ‘em two by two Now we hardly rhyme at all - but here’s a few and if they hurt, there’s bullets left to bite on Don’t wait up - Leave the light on - I’ll be - home -soon Short break thar drummer in my head needs inspiration There’s a lack of syncopation - and it holds me to a line It’s just so hard to leave these cages that we’re thinking By stages we’re just sinkin’ - to a slow decline For years we lived in waltz time - we danced them three by three Now it’s hard to dance, but if you stick with me -we’ve got what we need to spend the night on - Don’t wait up - Leave the light on - I’ll be - home - soon Break these races that we’ve run were not for glory - No moral to this story - We run for peace of mind but the race we’re running now is never-ending - space and time are bending And there’s no finish line - I will live to be a hundred - I was born in ’44 - 33 to go, but I ain’t keepin’ score - I've been left for dead before - but I still fight on -Don’t wait up - Leave the light on I’ll be home soon 'Cause I been left for dead before - but I still fight on - Don’t wait up - Leave the light on I’ll be home soon
met in iowa a few years ago, was a fan before that.....this song is to be played at my wake ...also born in 44... but i plan on being known as the old man who just woudlnt die
What's the tuning on this? I just came home from Chris Smither at Center Stage in Santa Fe and got all starstruck when I spoke with him and forgot to ask.
@@loualleluia6353 CS said that he played it and some person came up and told him "That is how I always wanted that song to sound, and I wrote it." It was Rolly Salley . It just a rearrangement of most of the moves in this song, so learning either is a 2-fer. You get 2 great songs under your fingers.
This deserves far more likes than a measly 567… love Chris Smither!!
Can't believe I just discovered this...wonderful! And who wouldn't love that drum kit...
That was so good
This song is such a beautiful rumination on life and time passing and such a lovely version too.
This song is an absolute masterpiece.
Great performance and what a great song.
So underrated..one of the all time great songwriters. A lovely version of the song.
Thanks for this song Chris. ❤

Peanut butter and jelly. Wisdom and Music. This chap relays such a feeling of life. Tells funny stories too. Hang around forever. Please.
A big AMEN to all of your comment; especially the ending.
This song is so beautiful

Yeah, agree. Interesting note, though, that despite his reverence for and emulation of him, Chris never did get to see or meet Lightnin' Hopkins.

Brilliant!
Such good stuff.
Love this guy, just discovered you Chris
Just flat out beautiful!!
If I were young again, I’d pay attention - to that little-known dimension
A taste of endless time
It's just like water - it runs right through our fingers
But the flavor of it lingers - Like a rich, red wine
In those days we were single - we lived them one by one -
Now we hardly see ‘em - they don’t walk - they run
But I've got plenty left I’ve set my sight on
Don’t wait up - Leave the light on - I’ll be - home - soon
Short break I’ve never seen my life in such a hurry - But if I stop to worry - I get left behind
It’s just a party, but you don’t get invitations - and there’s just one destination
You better be on time for years we rhymed in couplets - And we sang ‘em two by two
Now we hardly rhyme at all - but here’s a few and if they hurt, there’s bullets left to bite on
Don’t wait up - Leave the light on - I’ll be - home -soon
Short break thar drummer in my head needs inspiration
There’s a lack of syncopation - and it holds me to a line
It’s just so hard to leave these cages that we’re thinking
By stages we’re just sinkin’ - to a slow decline
For years we lived in waltz time - we danced them three by three
Now it’s hard to dance, but if you stick with me -we’ve got what we need to spend the night on -
Don’t wait up - Leave the light on - I’ll be - home - soon
Break these races that we’ve run were not for glory - No moral to this story -
We run for peace of mind but the race we’re running now is never-ending - space and time are bending
And there’s no finish line - I will live to be a hundred - I was born in ’44 - 33 to go, but I ain’t keepin’ score -
I've been left for dead before - but I still fight on -Don’t wait up - Leave the light on
I’ll be home soon
'Cause I been left for dead before - but I still fight on -
Don’t wait up - Leave the light on I’ll be home soon
Thank you. I needed that. Looked all over 'net, and kept getting other songs!
Wonderful! And in my old home town!
I saw him played at falconridg festival, he's the best guitarist and his special voices I ever heard

Great song. Love this! I'm the first view, too!!
his guitar is in open d DADF#AD
super
wow.
I’d love to know the tuning of this song. Such a beautiful and captivating melody and the poetry in the lyrics really touch my heart
It's played in open D tuning. Chris actually lists all the tunings for all of his songs in his website. 😊
Hi, Otis Gibbs sent me.
What's the tuning on this? I just came home from Chris Smither at Center Stage in Santa Fe and got all starstruck when I spoke with him and forgot to ask.
Got it! Open D--here's how it goes: D, A, D, F#, A, D
DADF#AD someone above said...
It's easy to gush, his concerts are so joyful, thought provoking and downright entertaining.
While you are in open D, try his version of Killing The Blues. Did a virtual open mic with it, and people liked it

what is the guitar tuned to
DADF#AD ?
Braw babe’s luv baby doll in Scotland 🏴 Perthshire 💋💐🎼🏴🍫🦄☘️💕🫶🥁🎤🥁🎸🐻💋
It would be nice if the video synced with the song. Is that asking too much? Apparently.
