One of the few errors in the series (and in the book) is that Blithe actually did survive and later served in the Korean War. He made contact with the company survivors in the 1980s at a reunion. Everyone thought he had died.
People have often wondered how the series could have gotten “it” so wrong.
So much of the movie (and the book it came from) was sourced by the recollections of the survivors ….. blithe was wounded enough that his recovery time meant he was removed from easy companies official roster…. Which led to the assumption to some that he had died
Blithe died in 1967. Easy heard he had passed from his wounds, that's how it got in the story. Blithe served in Korea and earned the Silver Star and Bronze Star. Obviously he overcame his fear.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Blithe
@@greggmulitz2941 Oh man, not sure where I got 80s from. Must have been one of the others I was thinking of. Thanks. Yeah, obviously distinguished himself later.
No mention of the music. The opening theme is, quite possibly the prettiest piece of music I've ever heard. Blythe survived the war, and served in Korea. He passed in the 1980's, if memory serves.
1967
Edward J. Tipper was the soldier who was blown up by a mortar shell (11:20). Both legs were broken and he lost his right eye, but he survived. He died in 2017 at the age of 95. (from Wikipedia)
The man “who knew he was going to die” Edward Tipper was taken back to England and patched up (lost an eye) and then was shipped back home, lived to 95. He married at 61 (Rosy, a woman 27 years younger!) and went on to be a Dad! Amazing story.
Yes, Blithe survives. One of the few mistakes Band of Brothers makes. Then went on to serve, with distinction in the Korean War. "The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it.” Winters may be the best, Nixon may be the most funny, but Speirs is my favorite in the end.
- Captain Ronald Speirs. He's more than a man of his word and will soon prove it for the entire company. Currahee ♠
Sherman Tanks were American made but used by both the Americans and the British Army as part of the "Lend-Lease" program to help the British.
They were even used by the Russians
Some Shermans actually wound up being given to Russia as well I believe.
British armored units used a lot of American tanks . Nearly all of the British tanks had been left on the beach at the Dunkirk evacuation or lost in the retreat to Dunkirk . One of my uncles was killed in training camp for WW2 when he was run over by one of our own tanks .
The man James said was a medic just checking them and moving on was not a medic. He was a priest giving mortally wounded soldiers last rites.
we have chocolate mini eggs. I chuckled when I saw your "bowl" of popcorn, with like 20 pieces in it. We have 5-gallon buckets of popcorn 😁
I wish I had the self control to eat one piece of popcorn at a time. Nah it’s by the handful.
A small error is the Fallschirmjager having Edelweis. There was another unit called Gebirgjagers who were mountain troops. They were the ones with Edelweis. Both units were considered elite.
The COD WWII game is creepy with this mission. I can identify almost every building from the Band of Brothers version. Love all the veterans out there, you don't get enough credit or respect. 🙏👍
That wasn’t a medic going from man to man checking on them. Notice the tiny cross in the front of his helmet. It was a chaplain praying over them.
As to the soldier being held by his friend after the explosion in the shop, he actually lived to a ripe old age.
Captain Ronald Speirs would go on to serve in Korea, and eventually retire as a Lt. Colonel. Mathew Settle, who plays him here, bears a remarkable physical similarity to Speirs. Ronald Speirs was a true life badass. His exploits described in this series barely scratch the surface of who he was. His actions in battle are legendary.
This series still holds up. Love it. Wait until you two get to B.o.Bs. sister series The Pacific (also Masters of The Air -i have yet to see this one, personally, though).
Love you guys!
Another American Cousin
This episode and the previous one are my favorites.
The parachute landings did not go as planned with units scattered all over. However, the German command was completely confused and did not know what the paratroopers objectives were. So the chaos of the jump helped stymie the German response.
Sorry, James, but I have to disagree with you regarding Speirs' philosophy about accepting that you're already dead..We each deal with fear and death in whatever way enables us to move past that fear and to accomplish our mission. For me it was not "ridiculous" as you say at 20:22, but rather I felt the same way Speirs describes. I assumed that I was already dead--or would be--and I no longer had the distraction of "trying to stay alive"; I was able to concentrate, to focus on the "now" for the sake of my men, rather than me.
Cadbury mini-eggs? Yes, we do :)
If you're wondering, Sherman tanks were considered one of the least safe, in Europe or in Asia. They were mobile but had thin armor. The Germans chewed them up, they were considered death traps.
Early in the war Sherman tanks had gasoline powered engines. They quickly were enveloped in flames when hit and earned the nickname "Zippos", after the popular cigarette lighter. Switching to diesel engines was a great help. Later on the Zippo moniker applied again when Shermans were modified to shoot napalm.
The crashed planes at the beginning were gliders, Each America Paratroop Division was made up of both types of troops para/glider and gliders carried jeeps, AA Guns, Cannons, Antitank Guns, Medical equipment, supplies, and other heavy items including Engineers and their equipment. 3 Para Regiments to 1 Glider regiment.
I hope things get better for y'all soon! Love from Georgia
Yes please come back 🙏❤. I am missing you guys 💟
Who has James "Oh my Days" count this episode? 🤣 As others said Blithe goes on to also serve in the Korean War.
A drinking game, perhaps? Oh, I couldn't do it!😆
@@michaelbrekkestran1462 oh gawd..my poor liver! hahaha
US Tank, the English used ours. The US was cranking out material at an ungodly rate while England was getting bombed nightly.
Tyat's a glider wing. The 101st Airborne had glider-borne infantry as well as parachute infantry.
It's not captured in the edited video here, but the soldier who was blasted by the rocket grenade in the cafe in Carentan and who's face was all bloodied etc also survived - his name was Ed Tipper and he lived until only a short number of years ago. Well into the 2010s. He lost an eye in the blast and had other injuries, but he went on to be a teacher for many years.
Winters really was an amazing man.
The Sherman was an American tank but it was also operated by some British units.
That mindset is a reality of military life. When your job has a realistic possibility that a man will tell you to do something that he, and you both know that you are not likely to survive, you prioritize completing the task over your own survival. You do that because you know that if you don't get it done they're going to send your friend next. Also, viewing your life as a sunk cost is like having a super power. Lots of risks that you would normally never consider are on the table.
11:54 that's a chaplain, not a medic.
The German armor was elements of the 2SS panzer division that was just arriving on the battlefield. US Airborne vs Waffen SS and German paratroopers, elite vs elite. US armor arrived in greater number forcing the Germans to bug out.
One major reason it turns out that the air borne had such a hard time moving inland. Was the Germans had captured a map detailing how the invasion was to move inland. The Germans knew what areas needed to be held.
Even without a map they would have had the same issues. The terrain dictated the course of the battles. The Germans and Americans both understood what the key terrain was.
Although there were a couple of mistakes made in Ambrose' retelling of these stories, this episode really delved into what would be a main part of the show, from here on out - dealing with mental stress of war.
Ooh. 1080p. Fancy.
Speirs is my favorite character
Hardcore
My dog is named "Spiers".
Unfortunately you got to learn the meaning of a crunchy, which is the sound a tank makes when it runs over an infantryman. The sound of a man in his equipment crushed up in your tank treads is horrifying to say the least.
Millies’ tender heart is taking a beating. Hang in there girl 😢
So there are a couple of inaccuracies that come up in this episode, the first one is pretty minor. it's when Blithe coming across the Fallshirmjager(German paratrooper) wearing the Edelweiss while what Captain Nix says about its symbolism is true. The flower would have been worn by a Gerburtsieger, a special unit that trained in the Alps, would have worn the flower as a badge on their hats. The second inaccuracy is at the end of the episode where the text says Blithe never recovered from his wounds and died (this was fixed in the book). In reality he survived his wounds and remained with the army all the way through to the end of the Korean War rising to the rank of Master Sergeant.
Sherman tanks are American tanks in WW2 the Germans had the tiger tank which it was superior than the Sherman tanks.
Yes, but Shermans (at least American operated ones) only encountered tigers 3 times between D-Day and VE Day.
US tank doctrine was to use the Sherman as infantry support to provide covering fire, blow bunkers, break infantry lines, etc.
For enemy tanks Americans relied extensively on tank-destroyers.
When Millie saw the allied tanks and said 'Germans, ' it was because someone in the scene said Shermans. Easy mistake.
Flippin’ Yanks should name their tanks better!
@@alundavies1016 Sherman was a great historical general general
@@martensjd I know that, but his name sounds too much like German!
Speirs words of "except that you're alread dead" will be seen in action later.
Shermans were American tanks given to the British to help them in the early stages of the war before the U.S. joined.
Named, of course, after Civil War Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, famous for "marching through Georgia".
It is not practical to take prisoners when you are behind enemy lines.
Well done, friends! Regarding Perconte's watches and Malarkey's quest for a Luger pistol, the book describes souvenir hunting as a favorite pastime for soldiers. The men would take terrible risks to find trinkets to send home or trade for something else. I've read that the camouflaged ponchos worn by the Fallschirmjaeger in this episode were good against weather, but were worn only by the feared Fallschirmjaeger and the hated SS. An ally took his life in his hands by wearing one. Looking forward to the rest of the series with you!
"Shermans" not Germans. M-4 Sherman tanks. The US made so many of them (49,324) that we gave some to the UK, the Free French, and the USSR.
Hi
They weren't blocking the video because of copywrite content, they were blocking it because of your overuse of the phrase "oh, my days".
I just have to ask Millie, was there any point you asked James to be quiet? LMAO
Oh wow...a 2 minute version. Yea, copyright stuff is a pain in the neck.
Fun fact blithe didn't die
I assume the claimant is HBO. Dear HBO, I do not subscribe to any of you services to watch a a 23 year old min-series. If you think I avoid watching it because I can see it for free with a British voice over, well, .... I can't help you. I suggest professional help.
Speirs was spitting straight FACTS to Blithe.
I ONCE tried saying "Oh My Days" out loud and it just did not sound right.
