    the reason you hear the two supercharged cars RPM pulsating is called boost or blower surge. basically they are not tuned to idle and make too much boost, as the motor leans out the RPMs come up the boost comes up and richens the mixture out and the engine slows down, the RPM's drop low enough to have a lean mixture causing the RPM's to increase, rinse, repeat.

      That blower and wild cam sound awesome.
      I got the same surge from my normally aspirated standard 360 V8 Mopar by advancing the timing and possible vacuum advance changes.
      Then same again from a HP GM V6 with stage 3 cam, all without any blowers or turbo's. Seriously, I got was a sore neck from the surge and sick of popping the bonnet to prove to folks it was not blown. But i must admit, blower surge does sound better.

    The pulsating actually has very little to do with the cam. It is actually created by the butterflies on the intake. Since the supercharger creates a vacuum to the butterflies, it forces them to close completely. Wich in turn starves the engine of air. This causes the vacuum to die down from the engine being close to stalling. Which in turn allows the butterflies to open slightly again, because there is no vacuum keeping them closed. This process keeps happening over and over.

    • @stylepoints.180
      @stylepoints.180 11 років тому +2

      *facepalm*
      With fixed valve timing, a camshaft is set up to make the most power and torque for a specific engine RPM. When this range is moved to a higher RPM than stock, it affects idle quality. Specifically the idle RPM may not be steady and/or the engine may sound as if it would stall and stop, but it doesnt, hence a "lumpy" cam.
      and BTW N/A cars also do it not just superchargers

    A shaft in the engine on which are the lobes (cams) that operate the valves. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft, via a belt, chain or gears, at one half the crankshaft speed. One or more camshafts regulate the opening and closing of the valves in all piston engines.

    If he is or not isn't really important. He is correct. That surge is actually caused by the compressor of the supercharger. Even roots and twin screws can have compressor surge just like a turbo, but unlike a turbo they are belt driven and the surge causes the idle do jump like that. In most cases it can be solved with the right setup, but sometimes it will happen regardless.

  • @cozmcwillie7897

    Absolutely beautiful looks& sound.
    Although... I was told a long time ago that revving up before switching off was not good.
    I used to think it was useful to give a final little blast of charge to the battery.
    However when you turn off the power, the oil pump stops immediately, and because you revved it first, the pistons are still going up& down, but without any oil pumping: so you're wiping away what should've been left coating everything ready for start-up.
    Doing it a few time probably doesn't matter, and on occasion adds to the drama of the show (like here); but on yer everyday runner it's not a good idea.
    If things are different these days tell me, I will stand corrected if needs be.

    @akrause, Yes the pro mods do not surge like that, but they also idle a helluva lot higher RPM. It can be tuned out, but you sacrifice some power doing so. The Impala is strictly a show car anyhow, so I'm sure the owner isn't to worried about a little compressor surge! It lurches like that cause of a very soft front suspension.

  • @emmanuelcano4908
    @emmanuelcano4908 5 років тому

    The surge is actually caused by the three big throttle plates on the front of the blower hat flexing under vacuum. When the idle drops it’s because the plates are sucked closed and chokes out the air supply. Then they release and idle surges and the cycle is repeated

      No its NOT called hunting, you get hunting with efi an these cars have machanical injection, what you are hearing is blower surge, its when the mechanical fuel pump is driven off the engine an it builds pressure then purged by the barrel valve to feed the engine fuel an keep it running,when the engine is fed more fuel it raises the rpm an in turn turns the supercharger faster not so creating more boost as its only at idle but letting the engine breath a lil better for those moments till that small amount of fuel is used and the rpms drop again till more fuel is injected an the whole proscess starts again, that combined with a big cam makes the surge more dramatic

      +LN 125 +LN 125 Well yeah it costs money, but why spend it, when only you and a few others will ever see what it got you? I have helped with rebuilding a 1967 Camaro, a 2005 Dodge Ram SRT10 and I am doing a Canadian made 1986 Grand Marquis (don't laugh I love that car). All have or will have seen hundreds of man hours, but all of them are on the road with ppl admiring them. I LOVE THAT FACT. I am a technician not just to preserve, but to repair when it breaks. And it breaks when you use it, who cares, it is fun, I understand that. Jay Leno drives all his cars afaik.

    My old 11 second nitrous 5.0 Mustang had a motor that was pretty close to stock specs as well but with a bit of nitrous and also had a stock rear axle. I could carry some extra tools as well as a pair of axles but I couldn't also bring along an extra motor if I grenaded it. It's just peace of mind for me that I can get it home and not have to worry about fixing it before the track kicks me out for the night.

    When a car lopes its not from a "huge cam" you can have a next to stock cam that lopes, the choppy idle comes from lobe seperation which can sound the same on a 242 degree cam as it does on a 310 degree cam. Now the slow idle on this one also has to do with the fact that it has a 14/71 sticking out the hood.

    The car is nice. Not taking anything away from that, but with a flat blade screw driver and some knowledge, it could be a hell of a lot nicer. My original statement was that the car is poorly tuned and the surging is blower surge, not a big cam as the title says. The only reason I mention anything about what I have is because you brought it up. I'm proud of every engine I build, so when someone doubts my knowledge and claims I don't know what I'm talking about... I prove them wrong.

    its called hunting n sometimes its caused by a fault in the governor. it also can b caused by a stretched or broken spring. when u change the speed setting on the throttle ur actually adjusting the governor but it still sounds super cool on really tough motors such as these..

    A lot of people seem to dislike these cars cause they aren’t driven much. Look, a lot of these cars aren’t street legal so that’s a start. Also, most of these cars are pushing hp numbers that dwarfs 1000, so it would be impractical and unsafe to drive them on normal roads. Not to mention gas consumption, and that some of these would be on race fuel.
    Also, you can daily a car and still have it look as shiny as these cars. Its called some prep work. Spend a good weekend buffing and shining a car, then trailer it over to the show. After the show, go right back to getting down and dirty on the strip

    The lumpier a cam is the more the blower will tend to surge at low rpms to keep the engine running. The computer is trying to keep it at a steady low rpm but because of the radical engine specs it can't, so it surges. It all works together guys unless I'm missing something.

    I'm not a full time mechanic, and I'm certainly no expert... So don't judge me here lol but 3 years ago, at our local car show, a guy had a nice Nova SS. Nothing special. Just a big block chevy with a 4 barrel Holley carb and a Thumpr cam. But every time the cam would roll, he'd stick his foot in it to get this sound. He was just showing off. I have no idea what this cars "problem" is, but it reminds me of that guy.

  • @N2Otorious

    That is called "Blower Surge", It is tuning issue. It Happens with a BIG mechanical fuel pump, Mechanical Fuel Injection and a Roots style blower running on methanol.
    The engine is loading up with to much fuel so it boggs(Too Rich), and when it boggs the fuel pump that is connected to the crank or cam, also slows down, making less fuel, the with less fuel the engine speeds up(Too Lean) then the fuel pump makes too much fuel(Rich) and then boggs, lean, rich, lean, rich etc.

      +D Anderson In this case it's true. My dad had an old chevy truck he rebuilt the engine in himself though that sounded like that without a blower, just a big assed Holley. He traded it for another vehicle that we needed and the guy that got it let the damned thing run out of oil. Not sure what it would run in the 1/4 or how fast it would go flat out, but it sounded evil.

      Seth Mullins Oddly enough my dad was the child of a Chevy dealer back in the 50's and 60's so he had many cars over the years that he got to own before my grandfather sold the business. The one thing he owned that wasn't a Chevy for his personal us was also a a '66 coronet. He didn't do the engine in the car himself, but he had to sell it because my mother kept getting speeding tickets and tickets for exhibition of acceleration because she couldn't take off in it without smoking the tires. lol I always wanted to have seen that beast myself.

    If anybody new the real reason is everything ( you need a monster cam ) ( you need a big roots blower )( and it needs to be running a little lean ) one without the other won't work as good. But what I really thought the old car coming off the trailer had the best sound I have heard since the "80s and "90s low tech cars with nice cams.
