S4 is not a competitor for M3 or M4. its a direct competitor for 335i X drive M sport. And it pretty much smokes the 335 in every department except navigation software.
If it smokes the 335, wouldn't that make it a competitor to the M3??? The S4 and M3 are so close stock-for-stock, wether it's pure acceleration, skidpad, braking... Throw a tune on the S4, and it's no contest.
+IViftyhands I have apr stage 1 tune. s4 was faster stock. Now, you would get murdered even further. Plus S4 actually has an interior that does not resemble a Mac truck. Better brakes on S4, looks better inside and out.
+Sapient Budgie actuall no I wouldn't .. See a stock s4 vs 335i .. Probably depends on the drivers. But with my jb4 tune and eisenmann exhuaust , and a better gear box would kill you .. I have many more tunes .. Try keeping up .. How much hp you have to the wheels

Great review...helped me with my decision to buy this car. Loving it! I had previously tried the M3 which was a little more raw but this is plenty powerful for a daily driver and more practical for Canadian driving with quattro for the winter.

Great detailed review. I’m on my second B8 S4 now (2014 and a 2010 before that). I disagree with your assessment of the handling, in that with the sport diff option at least, you can usually get the rear end to come out under power (at lower speeds at least). Unfortunately, the steering is quite numb, so it becomes difficult to balance the car under power in these conditions. I have found, you just have to kind of anticipate how much throttle you need to get the right angle and then hold it from there. In other words, you don’t get a lot of feel through the suspension or the steering in my opinion. The throttle response is way better than a turbocharged car though!

James Donlolo the M3 and M4 are genuinely the same car; however, they differ only in body styling. The RS4 and RS5 are similar except that the RS5 is stronger.

+Adam ZarZar Sad but true. Most manufacturers do some kind of sound manipulation these days especially with turbo engines being inherently muffled and noise regulations being what they are. I don't like it, but I agree with you that it's not the end of the world.
The difference is the Audi actually does it acoustically with a valve and piping it in. While BMW plays a soundtrack on the speakers. The Audi's is more authentic but that being said I don't like it either. However, you can turn off the feature in the settings.
There's no valves or piping, it's the same soundakator speaker used in the VW Line up. You can pull it out / unplug it next to the firewall. It's a basic sound transducer.

You can "reduce" the sound by putting it in comfort mode. You can turn it off by pulling the fuse or you can VAGCOM it too.
