MANOR LORDS | EP07 - MIND YOUR MANORS (Early Access Let's Play - Medieval City Builder)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 кві 2024
- Manor Lords has been my most anticipated city builder since I first stumbled across it in 2020 - the medieval city builder with RTS combat elements, and an economic system that integrates the two closely... what more could I ask for? This series will showcase Manor Lords gameplay while highlighting how to play Manor Lords, providing explanations for various mechanics and gameplay systems. If you like city builders, if you like medieval settings, and if you like tactical battles, I think you might like this series.

I guess we can finally, officially, call ourselves a Manor Lord now? Really pleased with the progress today, and can't wait for our expansion into the next region over. Keep those name suggestions coming - I've already got some good ones!
the most common place for a market was exactly at the front entrance to the church ... because it was to the church they sold some goods and to the burgers for their needs as well ... that is why in the english landscape their is always a nice plot of greenery out front ... it is where the old village market once was ... usually has a tavern beside it as well for Church visitors
"I might need to cut that tree down" says the man planning an orchard
11:35
Markets right in front of churches are definitely a thing all over Europe at least, there can sometimes be stalls practically leaning on the front walls even. I think the small market expansion there would make sense.
I was thinking the same. Churches and market squares often go hand in hand indeed.
Oh, def. In Heidelberg the "stalls" are actually built into the church walls, it was built that way.
The church was the town center and a main square in front of it served many purposes (including matket) and ensures a good view of the church. So yes, stall around the church!!! 🎉
The main cathedral in my city, Edinburgh, also has a large square in front of it but that's just where we used to do public executions...
@@gregarmstrong2500 is it wrong to say I like where this is going?
@@houndofculann1793 The square has a cobblestone love heart called the "Heart of Midlothian". It marked the entrance to the prison. To this day, Edinburgh locals still spit on it for good luck. Weird city.
I would like to think the Manor Lord was secretly working among the people to learn of their ways, and the discovery of the record of this would go on to inspire the show "undercover boss"
Like Henry V
I don't know if the game actually cares about stuff so thoroughly, but for the sake of authenticity I think you should rotate crops on your field like this
Field 1: Barley -> Fallow -> Wheat
Field 2: Wheat -> Barley -> Fallow
Field 3: Fallow -> Wheat -> Barley
Ya. Field rotation can be set up to do this. Mediaeval era towns used the '3 fields' system for just this purpose
Genuinely hope that people don't forget that this is a city builder, its not a Civ or AoE or TW or CK or whatever else killer. I got really annoyed by some "content creators" rushing to make "TW Killer is here" type videos last year. Don't want the release of this fantastic (possibly GOAT in the genre after Banished?) game ruined by a bunch of angry TW players lol
Love your vids @PE, look forward to tutorials and such!
Not all of us total war players are that stupid. Clearly battle is secondary in this game. Hence he went like 3 videos before calling up his military. Tbh I'm cool with that. I love total war and this looks quite lovely and I can't wait to play it.
Love that when you upgrade a house it gets taller. Like the family who just got a better condition decided to just build taller then everyone else to show their neighbors. "Look here dipshits, mine is bigger than yours..."
Well in England around this time merchants were taxed in part by how much street real estate their shop took up (how wide it was). So it is possible that it was similar with housing.
Name Suggestion: (Retinue). Valdym he was your first companion in Bannerlords so it’s fitting he follows you in Manor Lords.
I have watched a few different let's plays of Manor Lords and each of them seems to play differently. What I like about yours Mr Elite, is that you take the time to carefully explain things as you go along. Thanks a heap for this series.
If you can build up your retinue to high enough numbers, they can be dedicated bandit hunters without relying on your workforce. They also gain experience so it only benefits you involve them in as many battles as possible.
Ah. This series brings me joy.
And finally! A well-Mannered properly "Manored" Manor Lord!
Which brings me to the point of making known that I ABSOLUTELY support our Lord making sure his retinue wears the colors of his family's coat of arms! Especially if we have a dyer in town! Make them dye proper gold and crimson clothes! The militia are fine wearing whatever, but your retinue must be held to a different standard!
Since you're looking for a way to break the monotony of how you place your houses, will you build a few burgage plots near your Manor? I like to think that's where the servants and your retinue would live, so they and their families could be always close to the lord.
They could have small backywards where they deal with more refined things, like smithing and clothing and maybe one has a chicken coup and one has animals, just to create that feeling that the lord has some things at hand so he doesn't have to go down all the way to the village. Also, the animals would serve as supplies in case of a siege. Maybe you could have an extra Granary there. IDk. Things I think a lord should have.
Or maybe they could just have the houses. SInce you want to have some simpler houses without upgrades some of them could be near the manor. They are your direct servants (of course for the game they'll work with other things, but we can use a little bit of imagination).
Maybe you even make them wide so one plot could have 2 living spaces but no backyard since you don't plan on upgrading them...
(And in game they kind of are your servants because they keep helping with things you need families for like building shit...)
I also love that you started to charge the tithe to the church and it was upgraded. Like the priest reminded everyone that if they want God to look at them they need to have a better house for Him so lets start paying the tithe so we can meka a better church. And, hey, the priest kept his word...
While wikipedia might tell you a lot about the ministeriales (unfree knights and servants of the upper nobility etc) it won't tell you how important they were for shaping the Holy Roman empire. One of the peculiarities of the Holy Roman empire were the prince-bishoprics, secular states ruled by various powerful bishops and Archbishops. The Holy Roman emperors had appointed these to weaken the power of the secular high nobility (since they couldn't inherit or legally marry, and as such were less inclined to engage in dynastic politics). The ministeriales were key to backing up the power of these prince-bishoprics, since it meant that the bishops had a source of armed retainers that could hold land and serve in their military, but couldn't usurp the power or lands of the prince-bishops (reducing friction between the prince-bishops and their vassals) since the ministerialis class were only allowed to hold land in allod.
7:54 absolutely love that your retinue is detailed especially the extra little notes on them personally like Hanns who is “Secretly in love with the lord’s daughter”! You can rename them and I even have a new name for Hanns in my headcannnon he is Bernard Verbrennugen which means, Bold as a Bear Burns! 😂
Perhaps in the early game, when your militia is small and workers scarce, you could hire the cheap brigands and such to act as melee cannon-fodder positioned in front of your archers. You thus don't have to worry about 'friendly fire' and the archers can keep shooting. Losing those mercenaries is not your problem.
The "gridded" approach is neither historically inaccurate nor an eyesore, because of how the houses hug the terrain. As long as you make it curve around a bit and keep a good variety in the size, shape and contents of the backyard plots, it looks really nice.
i agree, i don’t mind the gridded look, if that’s how he likes to play then i don’t mind at all.
For the burghage plots, there is a rotate symbol next to the construction hammer after you have plotted it out, which will show other possible arrangements for houses in that plot. It would be good to check which ones there are before building as it can offer more or less houses in the space.
A good explanation for where the lord has been is this. Lords are sometimes granted new lands either by marriage, gifted by the king for services/loyalty or by conquest. This can be done even if the lord already owns lands elsewhere. So it's reasonable that this lord acquired the new land and has spent most of his time back managing his other property while this one grows.
Also, since you have enough influence, consider taking over that land right in front of yours. If you do that you create a "second layer" for the down, going downhill. Idk just a thought.
(also, sorry for how many comments i made, just a lot of thoughts on the ep)
You should have the option to march on road a bit faster then walking but not as fast as running, at the cost of needing to march to like way points. In tandem with the current move about system. it would make for interesting fights and spying to see were the next way point is, sets up ambushing naturally also. Even could add food the army when marching from point to point, but staying fresh at the cost of being locked in formation on the route to the points.
Being able to customize your retinue is so cool and the upograded soldier armor is SO BADASS!!!
Question: Is there a cost to each soldier? I know it costs to recruit them, but do they cost maintenance?
You can build several large towers in your manor to get more retinue soldiers, towers enlarge the area you can build walls around. You could circle your entire village with walls if you put towers around it, there is no limit on them in ea
Since you've already expanded the retinue cap I would suggest increase its size around 15 and use that to destroy bandit camps instead of militia.
From what I've understood bandits from camps are around 18 strong but lightly equipped and not so brave so that should suffice.
Won't want to found new town till March so has time to develop before a winter. Even just to do iron related will end up with a decent group of families.
I've come down with a cold the last few days, and I've really enjoyed catching up with this series. Loving what you've done so far and I can't wait to get my hands on the game myself!
Hamerschmidt. It's just perfect for both it's goal and the name/time period!
( 27:30 Yes bushels are correct for grains. Bales are for hay. Looking forward to seeing bread ovens and bakeries in the future episodes!)
Great work. Appreciate the fantastic content.
Love the vids! Might want to start the orchard near the manor as it takes a while for the orchard to mature!
by the leather storage you could always drop down the passive carts for firewood and food ... then you only need those to top off your locals there .. and the firewood then can be used in the factories etc to make more food and stuff
The village has hit 100 people!
Level 3 burgage plots are big! Would love for the houses to be different colors.
High quality content. Keep it coming. Thank you~
I love this series and am very pleased that you are taking your time to go through the detailed set up of the village with an eye for the seemingly organic growth; no straight angles. And you have a good eye for the layering of needs/responsibilities; veggies and apples, before the luxuries. Good job.
I want to do a shoutout for ye olde 'Lord of the Realm II', because I am happy to see some similarities. Hoping for some cows and wolves to be added to Manor Lords.
A question that I have; can you see what the Baron is doing/building, or is that covered by a fog of war?
If you expand the houses with the vegetable fields, you get more families and more veggies.
On hardcore manorial warfare and society I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series
Can you get your storehouse workers to just get stuff from near the pit? You know, gather what is near instead of traipsing around all over the place and maximise their efficiency?
this is wonderful ... keep up the good work.
Eisenschmiede would be a good name for your region, its german for Iron Forge!
Possible expansion name: Eiesenberg - "Eisen" being German for iron and "Berg" being German for "Mountain" or "Tall Hill". Another option could be Eisenreich (Ironrich), again Eisen for Iron and Reich for Rich.
11:24-11:26 You need better walls for your Manor, people seem to pass through them quite easily :P
I don't follow the development of the game super closely but one thing that would be awesome is more maps of course but specifically rivers and hills/mountains in the maps. Rivers were such an important feature that influenced the shape of towns. I would totally use that for layouts. And how cool would some bridges in town be.
Thank you for the new Episode! this game is wonderful and can't wait it to be release, also I wish you could do some kind of celebration or some gatering of sorts, that would be fun to see.
Would love to see retinue on horses, and breeding stables.
I really enjoy this series. I think I have to buy this game when it comes out!
Gotta love seeing "13 minutes ago" as the upload timestamp
Call the new production town "Goodstuff-Goodstuff" in German, of course😁
Btw Party: Zweiau is pronounced Zwei (Tswai) - Au (Ow); An "Au" can either be a floodplain or a meadow, but I think for this land Two Meadows "Zwei Auen" - Zweiau is more fitting
BTW, the hardest thing you can do is ask someone with OCD to not plan things in an organized fashion. OCD and organic layouts don't necessarily mesh well. :)
I wonder how feasible it would be to really micromanage the storage buildings a little more. Instead of having 1 big storage building with almost everything and 4 families, maybe 4 small storage buildings, each with 1 family and item (firewood or cloths, etc) to more control how many of each market stall gets set up.
Yeah I was drafting up plans to do exactly that - I think it might help
Hey elite im loving the playthrough man dont let all the people complaining bother you your amazing 😊
Can you rename the Burgage Plots? They wouldn't have addresses like "27 Bromwich Street" as today, but they might have been known by the community as the "Taylor's Lodge", "Fletcher House", or even by the name of the head of the household "Home o' Ezekiel".
You probably already know this but the first four letters of the Zweiau region, so "Zwei" mean "two" in German, "Zweite" meaning "second". Given that it's your second region, that's a pretty fitting name
Zweiau. Zwei is good but Au means meadow. Eisenberg fits
Really enjoying this series. Excited for the early access release.
Can the market be upgraded like other buildings? Didn't notice if there was an option when you clicked on it during the video.
I’d love to see a few choice gameplay elements from rimworld sneak into this game, and I’d also love it if some element of 3rd person action like elden ring or mount and blade were present as well.. plenty to ask for of course, but these guys are going to succeed with this game, and hopefully with success comes an opportunity to keep iterating
Pissing me off, I want to play this now! Not have to wait another 11 days...
To fix the issue with the market build a shrine in front of the new church and the remove the one in the middle of the marketplace.
Maybe upgrade the granary so it can hold more, as opposed to the 'juat about enough ' method to get food happening?
that shrine mid market be breaking the immersion
One thing: I think your soldiers would do better if they didn't run everywhere... Like I know sometimes you have to rush against time and beat the baron to it but if you can help it maybe marching towards an enemy is the best policy...
I cant wait for this game. I actually started a new campaign in Dawn of Man - it is like getting into the Manor Lords era untill ML will launch in EA :D
BTW you can enter exact number of Land Tax in the field to not have such a approval impact.
I truly enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering how your work force is impacted when you add a crafter to a burgage plot?
I think the roads get thicker based on the usage they see.
Where was the lord? Well he was in one of the houses. Most lords are pragmatic. But im sure he was happy to move into the Manor. Question, is this a downton abby kind of Manor? How many families does it take to run that Manor? Probably 2 to star with, 1 for taxes, and 1 for cooking a cleaning.
I feel like this is what Farthest Frontier should have been
This, and KCD2 being shown... oh boy
He played on such an early build that his retinue upgrade costs are different.
This game is epic! How much is the initial price for this game? Will it be on discount?
Hi man! Your exporting firewood, couldn't that be causing your stockpile issues?
Hey, just curious about whether there are gonig to be rivers, mountans and most importantly horsemen included in the game.
"A market right in front of the church doesn't seem like it would happen." Oooooh boy someone skipped on his bible reading...
“Sheaves” of wheat. Not sure if barley is the same.
Were you going to do a series of Lakeburg Legacies?
they need to add a bannerman for the retinues
Where do i send you diagrams of manor wall suggestions? I tried discord, but the people in there say you don't really use it anymore. I don't have twitter.
Does your levied militia gain battle xp?
Will a larger back yard creat more hides from goats?
Unfortunately no - that is only for gardens are orchards that maximize the land use
I'm surprised you aren't spending money on the retinue and using them exclusively to hunt bandit camps. You could keep your militia at home if you filled them out
Speed, send retinue early. As spys?
Dear party. Apples are broken in game. Please notice they are never in market and townfolk do not eat them.
your voice has gotten deeper
My name option. Call it (insert old town name)-on-sea. Just to fuck with people
"If you build it, They will come"..... Build more housing... LoL
Will you be making a tutorial?
Absolutely!
Why is the SINGLE family in the firewood shack not producing more than one family's worth of labor?!? Hmmmmmm.....
Possible name for new land Eisenborn which is German for Ironborn. Also you can't cut down the might oak tree of Adelsball.
...did you use google translate for that? Because german tends to use either "geboren" or translate "-born" with different words. Examples: Ironborn is translated as Eisenmänner (Iron men), firstborn is erstgeboren.
Barley uses "bushels".
After threshing, sure, but when gathered in the field? For instance, gathered wheat is “sheaves” until the grain itself is threshed.
Why don´t you stop producing warbows, as long as you are in desparate need of workers? It seems that they can´t be sold at the rate you produce them.
You are trying to do too many houses as artisans. At your town size, you shouldn't need more than 1 of a type unless you are making for export.
I was thinking the same thing. He may have been thinking about trying to make more product quicker but I don't feel the mechanics really work that way. One cobbler, one tailor, one dyer, one tanner, one brewer, etc. is usually how towns went. I could see multiple in cities, but smaller villages and towns shouldn't need more than one.
I know you have some people asking to stop and look at the "pretty unicorns and rainbows" in the city etc.... However, when we have our own program we can then spend all the time we like looking at this.... I have limited time and I would like to use it gettng to understand the machanics, stratagies and UI controls etc which is why I watch these videos... I am not interested in spending this time looking at the graphics, this will happen later with my own game. Don't take this the wrong way as it is just a suggestion as I now fast forward through these parts of your cast but that is again time wasting and I can then miss other things. Also a quick comment on the bandits, if you just hired an army to deal with them immediately (then released them) it would not effect your ecconomy and you would still make enough to cover it (plus more) and gain the reputation etc... As it seems it is very easy to get side tracked and miss it completely. SO in the early part of the game I belive this would be more effective plan and progress you much faster..... Just saying!
Always open to feedback! I'll try and find a better balance :)
And yeah the one bandit camp we missed at the start slowed us down a little for sure. I should've moved in faster, absolutely.
Hard disagree. The game is pretty from the close up, a lot of work was put into making it so. I always liked Party's content because he does not ignore stuff like this and showcases it.
Why is there no development of your second region? Surprised the homeless haven't left there by now.
Why concern about grid?its a game....gosh...
because its his?
Too long series for a showcase and too easy for a real playthrough
Dont cut the tree down... adds atmosphere
hold [tab] to find your oxen
don't cut the red tree down
for name of second city i vote for Eisenstein its actual city in Czechia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BDelezn%C3%A1_Ruda
