M M I'd like to know where you work, because where I grew up, teachers were paying out of pocket for classroom supplies and food to feed the kids who showed up to school with no lunch because their parents couldn't afford to feed them. Where I grew up teachers worked overtime grading, creating comprehensive lesson plans, and and sponsoring after school activities so kids had a safe place to be after school. Where I grew up, teachers worked second and third jobs to pay their bills and student loan debts, including working through the summer. Teachers are consistently underpaid nationwide for the amount of education they're required to have and the amount of work they're expected to put in. I know teachers who have sacrificed so much for their students; who've gotten hit, spit on, threatened, and they still do the job they do because they're invested in these kids' well being.

M M honestly. I've had awful teachers too. I've had homophobic teachers that made me physically uncomfortable and I've had teachers that were so racist and condescending that they really fucked over one of my best friends who's mixed. (I lived in a more urban but very poor west virginia town until high school, and then I moved to rural Virginia.) I really was lucky to have teachers who created a space for me and people like me to be safe. And it's really unfortunate that not all kids have that. In my opinion, the only way to have higher quality teachers is to pay them better. I know that sounds counter productive, like rewarding bad behavior, but in a lot of school systems, teachers are paid so little that there is a major deficit in employees. When you have more competitive wages and benefits, your demand increases and you can afford to be more selective when hiring. Schools with less funding and lower wages consistently have lower ratings and test scores. It's pretty basic economics, but our government hasn't ever been super concerned with education, much less education for poor kids and black kids. (there are a lot of other, more system wide problems with our education system but that's an argument for another day)

Uniblonder it's true that some more affluent areas appreciate their teachers and pay a fair salary. But much more common, and fast becoming the new normal, are cash strapped areas who have continued to cut budgets for education. In California 6
kindergarten teachers, including my mother, had to pay out of pocket for 90 percent of anything non-curiculem; math, reading, science. Not to mention their salary was never even close to what was promised. Teaching is 8months a year, but IDK why you think they're getting paid, most aren't! Then there are a never ending and growing weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-quarterly, annual, review date, and making time for every over protective 🚁 helicopter parent, then it's time to grade HW, or set up the next arts and crafts project all 10,000 little cut out cardboard pieces. They have a very hard job

    • @figuremeoutyourself
      @figuremeoutyourself 6 років тому

M M unfortunately, with the teacher deficit there's not a whole lot school systems can do to punish subpar teachers. There's so many empty job openings that firing a teacher becomes difficult because there won't be anyone to take their place. And I have to say, I don't think camera surveillance on classrooms foster a very healthy atmosphere for kids to feel safe or comfortable in. In my experience, I often had more problems with administration not pulling through than I ever did with teachers. Regardless, everyone's experience is different and I think it's generally clear the education system needs serious reform. No Child Left Behind has done way more harm than good and there are teachers all across the country who are barely getting by

    • @Jafje

If you pay them more, actually qualified people might consider doing the job. If you can't earn a living wage and are so underfunded that you don't even have enough materials at your disposal, you can't expect decent education.
If I were one of those teachers, having two university master degrees myself, I would have quit and switched professions. Qualified people do that, you know, if the pay is so horrible.
It is an absolute disgrace to pay educators so little and to undervalue education to such an extent. The only teachers left will be those so passionate that they are willing to suffer (which is just shameful) and teachers that aren't able to do their jobs properly. You might also consider that, if teachers have to take a second or third job, the quality of their work suffers, since they are overworked and teaching is more than just a 9-to-5 job.

I grew up in west virginia and my family literally had to move away because my mom (who is a single mother) didn't make enough money as a public school teacher to support my brother and I. People should be supporting these teachers in their strikes, because they're not just striking for their pay but for the funding for their students' education. And while they're out of school right now, they're out protesting, making sure their students have food, and are volunteering at after school programs.

    • @figuremeoutyourself

me not u my mom has had to work two additional part time jobs in the past to keep my family afloat. Higher wage means teachers have more time to devote to lesson plans, grading, professional development, and a whole score of other things that improve education in schools. Not to mention that paying more increases the demand for those positions, meaning you can be more selective when hiring teachers. It's basic supply and demand. During the teachers strike in west virginia, the state literally could not afford to fire striking teachers because they pay so little that there was already a defecit in teachers, and there would be no new employees to replace the fired ones.

I live in Northeast Oklahoma. They tried to get a bond passed last year or the year before to raise teacher pay. They were going to raise taxes to pay for the pay increase...when all said and done they would have negated their raise and been right back where they started. Let that sink in. These are the people educating kids. There are things that we can do. I have family members that work in public schools. A lot of money is wasted on subs (they contract temp agencies to call subs to keep up with demand) and books that have little to no changes. They recently spent 300000 for math supplement books with a license that can only be used once online. Teachers should focus on wasteful spending in their schools.

There is a pretty simple solution to creating a good teaching environment, pay teachers equal or more than administrators. That way people will compete way more than before for teaching positions. Naturally that will get us better and higher quality teachers which will then be able to raise our education standards naturally.

When teachers graduating from college, they can look forward to having more debt after their first thru fifth year of teaching them when they started. But move to Texas, as I believe one of the “teachers of the year” from Oklahoma did, and you get paid over $60K.

Jackson Dune The Oklahoma passes funding increases for education, but never funds them. Our state budget is in the red for hundreds of millions so it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on. The last time they increased teacher pay, they didn’t fund it so schools that were already under funded were on the hook for the mandatory raises. Some had to let other personnel go in order to have the money for the increases. Small schools were hit hardest and the majority of our schools work with a skeleton crew to begin with.

M M yeah isn't the reason we work is to collect a paycheck, pay bills, food, ect.? Every individual is going to put so much into their profession. That's the real world, some people love their job, some are there for the paycheck. Maybe you should focus on yourself and not what others are doing. My point was a small majority of kids actually wanted to learn what's being taught in school, majority of students just do enough to get by, and a few others are there cause they have to be. You can't teach crap to kids who don't wanna learn anything but new features on Twitter. Funny we've never met and you assault my intelligence. what we can't just have an agree to disagree friendly talk on the UA-cam comment section. Sir or Ma'am.... You have a good day. Thanks and here's where we'll most likely disagree. School Boards are there because of the students. (=No students, no school board). (No students = No Teachers). (No students = no buses). Back to my point: If I protest working conditions at a John Deere plant, I wouldn't "borrow" a company owned tractor to do my walkout. I feel all teachers, like Wal-Mart Greeters deserve higher pay & benefits, but no one twisted your arm to sign on. Lastly, don't "schmooze" your way onto a free bus ride/fuel/driver costs that was funded & contracted for the kids, to fulfill your own agenda, Good luck and my new sign will read: "KEEP PROTESTING TEACHERS OFF SCHOOL BUSES" Oh yea, isit buses or busses - I'm sure you wonder: grammarist.com/spelling/buses-busses/ Thanks and fun !

They're already averaging 45-50k/year + benefits, and want another 10k..... That's ~$32/hr currently (considering the 3 months vacation), and they want that closer to $45/hr (average + benefits).... How many of the people here who are saying that they deserve a raise are earning anywhere near that amount? Do you think a teacher is doing 6x the work of a typical minimum wage employee?
The problem is the union, it doesn't allow for better teachers to get raises, so all the current teachers don't want to work harder because it gets them nothing extra. If we could pay the best teachers more, and fire the bad teachers (also not allowed by the union), THEN we would be able to improve the system and increase the quality of our teachers. Unfortunately, unions force all the employees to become "equal", mindless, drones with no ambitions. You only get promoted by seniority, and not by the quality of your work. We all know this is true, out of all the teachers in our lives, there was one, maybe two teachers that were great, and the rest were..... not so great......

+_in my eye, I'd have no problem paying them 10x minimum, but only in a free market. I wish it were true that higher pay attracted better talent, but that doesn't apply in government. If you have talents, you go to the free market, where you can get compensated based on your abilities and not seniority. Everybody in government is there because they want to make a lot of money while not having any real abilities to offer. You won't get fired from the DMV for being too slow, in fact, you'll get into trouble for being too fast and your co-workers will hate you for making them look bad. The unions won't even allow them to raise the standards on who's qualified to be a teacher. They just want bodies. You can't get better teacher with zero accountability, even if you started out as a great teacher, you quickly learn that there's zero reason to work harder than anybody else.

You can't really improve something if funds for it aren't increased. Can you make repairs to a car if don't have the money for parts?

Christopher Nau Do you get a raise at your job for poor performance?

Scott Crockett You get what you pay for. Poor wages don't attract the best people. Also teachers can't perform at their best if they have to work a second job to support themselves rather than spending more time lesson planning. Finally, they're striking mainly for more school funding, not pay raises because you can't teach well if you don't have sufficient resources to do so.

Alex education is a massive black hole in most state budgets that taxpayers rarely see a return on. You have Oklahoma and Kentucky wanting more $ but refusing to better perform.

Scott Crockett So the strong correlation between education funding and student performance when comparing between states is pure coincidence?
