I'll probably use this soon ? I was gonna buy another kit but this guy gives me confidence that it can be done a little bit the ole fashion diy way without the big commercial products?
Great tips , Quick question do we need to open up the tail as well or will it pickle and and tan ok without it being opened , I’m attempting my first fox skin .
I get it forn in the house, you can control your ph levels with citric acid up or baking soda is down....between 4-5 is good. I've got furs that I've had for 5 years, and no hairs have slip...
@@mountainbushcraftersallian8654 ok I had have trouble with the ph just wondering. Thanks for the info how much acid do you add per gallon of water to bring it up
@@hillbillyheart217 i start out with 1/2 oz per gallon water of citric acid and a pound of picking..per gallon....let it set 24 hours and check it....add as needed...total gallons of water us 3 oz of citric acid and 5lbs of canning pickling...measure as needed deoends on how many furs ya have... thats the recipe I used and its always worked...be sure to submerge you hides completely and agitate every 24 hour, allowing them to sit no more than 65-70 hours..... rinse and ring them out then add them to a solution of a pound of baking soda and 5 gallons of water for 24 hours to kill or neutralize the acid....stretch hang them...
Thanks!! I've got til Friday eve (60 hrs) before it'll be ready to rinse in baking soda/warm water mix let it set in that for 24 hrs....then rinse with clean water and stretch to dry....babysit it and as it begins to dry, start breaking the fibers (working the fur)....sure appreciate you....
If I have a hide that I salted down with pickling salt when I first skinned it how long can I leave it like that before starting next step. I’ve had it for some time now. Hard as a rock but no smell or anything. Can it still be tanned ? Thank you
You just have to spritz it with a little water and to limber it up, and begin pulling and stretching it to break the fibers, then tan it...it should be fine..
Mountain Bushcrafters Alliance MBA thank you very much for your reply. I subscribed and anxiously waiting for more tanning videos. Want to do my own and have never done tanning. Just did first euro deer skull which is turning out nice. Anything you can share would be awesome 🤘🏼
@@inxs13 I'll do a vid on the finished product, I had to have my foot reconstructed if the reason I don't finish this out, the steps must be followed and I was able to film it in its entirety....but I will, now that I'm on the mend
You apparently dunno how to follow instructions, don't blame me for ya dumbassery.......I have furs put away and using long before this vid was made....with the same methods.....
I really like this guy. Very sensible and straight forward.
I sure appreciate you!!!

Will regular non iodine salt work with your method that is what I normally use.
I need a coyote fur belt, or coyote fur to make a belt. Where can I get it?
Depends Francisco on where you are I have a few Coyotes tanned..
@@mountainbushcraftersallian8654 Washington state. Do you have some photos to see them?
@@franciscorangel3559 I do, but it will be this week..I'm out of town
Just to add...I doubt your hide will ruin if left longer than 70 hrs. I've left my hides in for months as long as you measure your ph levels
Same here I've left hides in a pickel for 2 months before and had no problem
Can't wait for step two got a yote I want to do.

Personally I would degrease those yotes firstly.the pickle cant get IN if there is a barrier of grease in the way
That's not accurate it will absorb from the fur side
Completely ruined my hide using his instructions
