We (a navy ship) used to escort civilian ships through these areas. We had rules of engagement that had to be adhered to. We couldn’t fire or even get involved unless it got out of hand. The foreign nation cargo ships had way less restrictions. One particular incident stands out in my memory.
Around 11 pm, 1/4 mile or so away from a ship we were escorting called for a mayday and said pirates were swarming in from the opposing side. We slowed down to swing behind them and prepare for a potential engagement. Our helicopter that was running recon ahead was in route to intercept them but was still a good ways away. The crew of the ship opened fire with dozens of automatic weapons. In an almost pitch black sea, gun fire rang out and a firework show of flashes lit the silhouette of the ship we were moving into position to protect. Before we could even get close enough to put eyes on the target, there was an abrupt cease fire. We soon got on target and got our spot lights positioned. All that was left was the remains of boat shaped debris floating in the water, and lots of blood. Men could be seen cheering and shaking rifles over their heads along the rails of the cargo ship. As we advanced past the side of their ship, I waved and pumped a fist in the air. A couple of the men pumped fists back in the air before hastily going inside the ship.
A dozen or so dead pirates were recovered later that night by their country’s authorities. We stayed on scene until they arrived to relieve us. Good job to that civilian crew. Big brother was right there if needed, but that crew didn’t need us that night. They took care of business and rid the world of a handful of oxygen wasters. Those pirates cost me two days in port. Glad they got what they deserved.

@@GingerNinja1 hey, none taken. It’s a valid question. And thank you.
We weren’t escorting them specifically. We were patrolling the area and guarding any ship in the area. They happened to be crossing our path so we stayed near by until they would be out of our area of operation, at which point we would have turned around and found the next ship.
Also, when dealing with an adversary, the goal isn’t to make it an even fight. The goal is to neutralize the threat. To play on the “knife to a gun fight” phrase: Why bring a gun to a gun fight when you can bring 30 guns?
That crew was more than capable of handling their own, but we were there in case their defense protocols weren’t enough. Idk, but if I were a betting man, I’d say they had some particularly high value cargo based on the response they had to the pirates. They never went into lock down. They went straight to defensive posture.

Pirates know they won’t get shot, so they just keep coming right up until they run across a ship that shoots them. And by the time that happens, it’s usually too late. Like when they mistake a Navy ship for cargo. They usually wind up sunk and arrested. And if there’s a mother ship in the area, the same fate awaits them.
