We (a navy ship) used to escort civilian ships through these areas. We had rules of engagement that had to be adhered to. We couldn’t fire or even get involved unless it got out of hand. We slowed down to swing behind them and prepare for a potential engagement. Our helicopter that was running recon ahead was in route to intercept them but was still a good ways away. The crew of the ship opened fire with dozens of automatic weapons. In an almost pitch black sea, gun fire rang out and a firework show of flashes lit the silhouette of the ship we were moving into position to protect. Before we could even get close enough to put eyes on the target, there was an abrupt cease fire. We soon got on target and got our spot lights positioned. All that was left was the remains of boat shaped debris floating in the water, and lots of blood. Men could be seen cheering and shaking rifles over their heads along the rails of the cargo ship. As we advanced past the side of their ship, I waved and pumped a fist in the air. A couple of the men pumped fists back in the air before hastily going inside the ship. A dozen or so dead pirates were recovered later that night by their country’s authorities. We stayed on scene until they arrived to relieve us. Good job to that civilian crew. If the ship cannot legally arm itself, then the companies that own the cargo should escort the ship through those territories by hiring enough security personnel with equipment as they move through each area even if that meant having 4 different sets of guard/escort boats to protect each area.
Well during ww1 and ww2 merchant ships were actually heavily arm with artillery and AA guns manned by gunners and loaders that were part of the crew. It's was use to defend against enemy bombers, U boats and merchant raiders. I remember a liberty class cargo ship sank a merchant raider in a gun duel but it was also sunk in the process.
Totally agree, the issue is with how it works everywhere. Those you trade with must also support those same policies. When entering a trading post of another country that refuses to allow those ships to carry weapons for defense.
Every shipping company must hire at least 10 armed guards for their ships. And to provide heavy arms as well like MGs and SRs. RPGs too. No pirate would dare attack again.
It's also a question of legality in regards to insurance laws. Mind you these guys were only armed with AK’s and an RPG with two rockets. That’s all they had and decided to challenge. Needless to say they were arrested and probably regret trying to challenge a US Navy ship

I did anti-piracy operations, even ended up in a movie, all the "pirates" we saw were in little dingy 3 person fishing boats, nothing massive. I was part of the vbss crew and anytime an American flag rolled around that area, there was no pirates. Just our presence was enough to keep them hiding. But that was over a decade ago, so who knows what it's like now
In addition to having armed guards on board, they should have armed drones and should also have some barbed wire hydraulic system that just pull down or lift when needed.
Or they could just hire some men like me, who will make sure absolutely NOONE makes it on that ship alive thats not supposed to be there. These shipping company's need to stop being cheap. These attacks are actually pretty easily deterred with the right security in place!

Why is it illegal? Who decides these rules?
It boggles the mind that they don't arm these sailors.
If the ship cannot legally arm itself, then the companies that own the cargo should escort the ship through those territories by hiring enough security personnel with equipment as they move through each area even if that meant having 4 different sets of guard/escort boats to protect each area.

Heres a crazy idea. Let merchant ships have guns.
What a stupid problem to have these days.
Only criminals get to have guns!
They have weapons.
@sandy_sd10 they don't, though. Laws of other countries when doing trading prevents them from having guns.

It's also a question of legality in regards to insurance laws.
