The Art Market: Part 1 - Auctions

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 19 чер 2016
  • I made this series of mini-docs with artsy.net and UBS about the contemporary art market. The idea was to tackle a difficult subject and offer a primer on how to begin to understand it. This is part 1, concerning fine art auctions. Edited by Nate DeYoung. The Art Market (in Four Parts) series is owned by Art.sy, Inc. For licensing of these films, please contact legal@artsy.net.

    Two words: Money. Laundering.
    Art (has become) is nothing more than a store of value. That’s it and that’s all.

      Look into “live art “ it can be shipped internationally without being checked the contents by customs 😒 I can only think it’s human trafficking because shipping animals can happen without it being hidden.

    Kind of fun to watch - its an amusing demonstration of the creative dimension being atvthe base of our ways of acting and thinking - and its also a narrative of how power is an important part of human consciousness. It seems to be a playground for the creation of modern World. And at the same time there are the eternal questions of quality. What is the important quality of a piece of art? Or anything else in our ways of acting and thinking -

    I took an Art History course to fulfill a requirement last semester. The best part was when, after working up through about 1900, we arrived at the Dada works. My professor asked, "Is this art?" when looking at Jean Arp's "Collage...," then sat and watched as 30 twenty-somethings argued amongst each other, then fumed for an hour. Definitely her favorite day of the semester.

      It is

    • @NathMainA99
      @NathMainA99 5 років тому

      people still bought art before 1900s for large amounts of money there was no tax then your opinion is flawed

    • @containercore6832
      @containercore6832 5 років тому +2

      @@NathMainA99 The speculative art market is a recent phenomenon. The value of a piece of art in the past was based on its perceived value as a masterwork, not a set of investments that will appreciate in value. Also the tax evasion bit means that you can donate artworks and write off their value on your income tax. So if you buy a work from a relatively unknown artist, have it appraised by an "expert" (ie art world contact) at a later date for a higher value, you've just received a credit to write off several thousand to several million dollars in income tax. There are many ways to manipulate the art market, especially after the 20th century where art is divorced from craft ie consensus aesthetic value.

      Basquiat whom was talked about here had a confirmed case of money laundering with one of his paintings. I believe, but might be mistaken, that a Rothko painting was also involved in a separate case as well. Paintings are internationally exchanged yet not as regulated as other enterprises. If I'm not mistaken the Basquiat was not subtle; however, like any occupation their are those who find themselves not as gifted as others. That last statement being of my own personal opinion followed by one more antidote- knowing a crime has occurred and prosecuting said crime are vastly different in executing.
