The KCS Steam Fleet: "What Once Was..."

- Very happy to get this video out! Hopefully, y'all may have learned something or at least enjoyed the presentation of it. KCS, like many other railroads in the U.S., is virtually never talked about when it comes to steam power. With the railroad in its final days, this era of their history needs to be explored.

Definitely had a blast making this video! Happy Friday and enjoy the weekend! Check out my playlist to view other episodes of this series!
I love the kcs 2-10-4s so beautiful
My personal favorite steam locomotives.
I Love All Steam Locomotives Especially The ATSF Ones And I Cant Wait To See KCS Steam Locomotives!
You did not say, but did you know that the 900s were split into 2 groups, one burning coal for use north of Ashdown and the second group burning oil for use south of Ashdown? If any of the Mallets were sent to Shreveport or farther south, they had to be cooled, drained, and then towed to Shreveport from Texarkana because they were too heavy to work across the Caddo Lake bridge over the Big Cypress Bayou channel.
My dad's dad worked for the KCS in the car department until he died in the early 30s. My dad worked in the office as a clerk for a while and his older brother retired as a clerk for the KCS in Shreveport. I worked for about 1 1/2 years in the Division Engineer's Office at Deramus Yard from June 1969. I grew up on E 67Th St in Cedar Grove about a block from the KCS main line.
Great information and video! Thoroughly enjoy the information about KCS as I am in Ridgeland, MS and see the action on the Speedway regularly. Keep up the fantastic projects. They are very much appreciated and enjoyed.
This has to be my favorite video of this series. KCS steam is something that is truly overlooked and you did an amazing job putting this all together. Never knew the KCS had shays either! A fun fact about one of the Texas Types, #905, was painted in a red white and blue “War Bonds” scheme sometime during WW2 while in service.
I know even Lionel made a model.
Really enjoyed the video Bishop! Made me know some stuff that I never knew about the KCS Steam Fleet till now.
Probably the most impressive steamers I would consider would be the G1 Mallets and the J Class 2-10-4’s. Definitely wish one of them could’ve been preserved but one could dream. 🤷
Always looking forward of what’s coming up man! 🤙
Thanks Dylan! Yeah the Mallets and Js were something else! One couldn’t imagine if some were saved!
KCS 2-10-4s were a beautiful locomotives.
I saw CN and Cityrail with a CP dpu at the end yesterday in West Monroe
Wow, I didn’t know KCS had a steam fleet once before diesels took over, thanks for sharing and posting it!
Great work! I don't believe anyone since A.E. Brown has tried to do this with the KCS. Well done!
They need to make a KCS steam in HO scale!!! Especially the 2-10-4
Another awesome video. Thanks for shring and enjoyed watching once again. Have a wonderful rest of your Friday evening.(Steve)
I really enjoyed seeing the Manchester Locomotive, such a rare beast, the Alco G1 and G2, and the Wabash locos
The tender from KCS 759 has survived. It's currently at the Illinois Railway Museum and it's an interesting story on how it got there
Yes I actually forgot to include that.
A friend and I repainted and re-lettered for the KCS one side of the tender when it was sitting in Galt, IL.
But why did KCS scrap almost all of there steam engines except for 1023!? They were almost like delaware and hudson which has no preserved steam locomotives
Fascinating video about a railroad I don't usually tend to think about and is often not discussed where I'm from. Fun fact, the Great Northern also classified their pacifics as "H" classes
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching John!
What would've been cool is if the KCS Shays were preserved and/or restored and operated at the Roaring Camp Railroad in California, the Illinois Railway Museum, or the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia.
The "Texas" type 2-10-4 class engines were the most attractive looking steam locomotives on the KCS rr system in my personal perspective.
When was the last steam run on the KCS?
Couldn’t give you an exact date, but probably the mid to late 50s.
I could geuss that 1954 was the last steam run on the KCS
@@amtrakproductions-mx9ibI can barely remember the steamers.. 6 or 7 yrs old.. west arkansas..
Great Job! I really haven't seen much from KCS Steam days
4:00 what song did you use here? I like it
I live 1/4 mile from the KCS in far eastern Oklahoma. I wish there were sound movies of the railroad in our area of the Ozarks. The echo off the whistles would have been cool.
Unfortunately, KCS steam footage seems to be very rare.
The 70” drivers and the shay were incredibly interesting!
Finding out KCS had shays was something else!
What an excellent video! I don't know which one I like best. I had no idea the mallets could only go 20 mph. Or, perhaps I heard that wrong. I'll have to watch the video again 🙂. Presently, I have a pretty good O-gauge diesel stable to pull my KCS freight trains and Southern Belle trains. What I need are some cars to make-up a KCS Crow manifest and an appropriate steam locomotive. I liked the Pacific but I gotta think about it some more.
BTW, I live in Mena and really enjoy watching the trains between Heavner and Mena.
Can you do what’s once was kiamichi railroad?
This is an awesome project you’ve done! I already know it took some time to plan all the components to make this happen. Love it!
I would recommend the Old NS if you continue to do the series no one talks about 99.9% of the time
This was a good video. I was reminded of sitting with my neighbor, Charlie Winters while he talked about KCS President Loree and his aversion to having non-powered wheels. That's why you rarely say trailing wheels.
A side fact: At most of Midsouth's yards, the IC/ICG had old steam tenders used to store sand for the locomotive sand towers. Even though these tenders were stationary, Midsouth numbered them in the 1000 series....the same as their GP10s. No idea why.
I'm sure the KCS has disposed of these tenders by now.
First I’ve heard of this. Very interesting!
I really wish one of the 2-10-4's would've been saved but at least we have the 1023
I agree!
@@LouisianaRailProductions Then again hes a survivor of 2 clases?
Certainly a shame those 2-10-4s were all scrapped, would be amazing to see a new build one if there’s an enthusiast with deep enough pockets
You should return to Rock Island Rail in the future!
While I don’t see a visit to Sumner again anytime soon, I have several things I want to do in the Gulfport area, and that includes a pitstop by G&SI.
@@LouisianaRailProductions that still is rock island though and they have plans to operate railroads in Alabama and Louisiana hence you're name, I just want to see more Rock Island Rail that's all :)
I barely remember the steamers.. south of mena..
Great video of the KCS Steam Fleet Bishop! Sorry for the late comment again, I was very busy today.
I have a 1940s kcs railroad spike
Lima is pronounced Lye-ma, not llama.
Yes that’s what I said. I can see people mishearing if they’re not use to southern accents haha!
I heard Llama too.
Well done.
Great video of the Flying Crow under steam. I look forward to your discovering an audio recording of the "Volatone Crow Horn" on the Flying Crow steam engine No.808. Good luck!
Credit goes to the H.K. Vollrath collection. Where can I find this recording?
@@LouisianaRailProductions I have no idea, and only hope that someone may have recorded it, since it was an oddity and novelty. I am just hoping that one day you may uncover it in a collection, such as the H.K. Vollrath or A.E. Brown Collections. Although I have seen pictures of the special horn mounted over the Engineer's Cab, I cannot even find information regarding the Volatone company.
I still can’t believe that the KCS barely preserved any steam engines.
Well actually one does survive today 0-8-0 1023 which is on display
Bishop I really enoyed the video!!!-Bob
Thanks Bob!
They are a kcs steam locomotive @the heart of the heartlands railroad museum in corona KS
Was sure to mention that in the video!
Awesome video😊
Thanks!
Pittsburg Kansas roundhouse had over 400 employees in its prime.
Nice video
Thanks!
There is a KCS steam locomotive on display in Port Arthur not far from the Port Arthur yard or at least there was in the early 20 teens.
Along our route to Beaumont there are several steam engines water towers still standing
You do great research, and your writing flows well, also.
Awesome video. By far the giant Shay #900 was the most interesting to me. That thing was massive. Your video quality compared to subscriber count ratio is way off. I can't believe you don't have 100,000 subscribers as good as your videos are and content in the videos is. Again awesome video. 👍
Really appreciate the kind words! Means a lot!
