  • The Saskatchewan government has announced it won't pay the federal carbon tax on home heating. Starting next month, the province will look to stop remitting the tax to Ottawa on natural gas bills. Producer Lauren Bird explains why Saskatchewan says the tax is unfair - and whether a province can actually circumvent a federal law.

The tax did NOT survive the legal challenge. The tax defence was "equally" across all provinces. When the Federal government carved out exemptions for some provinces, they undermined thier own legal argument. The Supreme Court ruling is no longer valid.

Only certain outliers (some rural locations, some high transit jobs (like truck driver maybe?)) may not be and, over time, those are getting adjustments like the 20% additional rebate for rural residents mentioned in this video.

You forgot to mention the 2021 judgement was based on the fact that the carbon tax was unilaterally applied to all of Canada except for Quebec, of course, which should have debunked its validity right there and then. Now though, the Federal gov't has broken their own policy with the carve out which gives the provinces the window of opportunity to refuse to collect and remit the tax. This dismisses the supreme court ruling based on the fact that the gov't itself has falsified or contradicted the very reason that made the tax constitutional according to the judge.

Because they don't participate. That's the choice those provinces made and they have their own plan. That was decided years ago.
Saskatchewan had the choice to come up with their own plan, like BC, or join the federal plan. They choose the federal plan now they're reneging and being petty.
If this is about savings, why don't they eliminate the provincial sales tax on home heating before asking for someone else's tax to be removed?
Yes, 30% of Atlantic Canada, who heat with oil are still getting their rebate and so are the rest of the people, in provinces that participate, who have oil heating, including 12.5k oil heated homes in Saskatchewan.
If you look at data, there's almost as many houses in Ontario that heat with oil as there is in all of Atlantic Canada. There's actually double the amount of homes that heat with oil in Quebec compared to all of Atlantic Canada. It's not an Atlantic Canada exemption, it's an oil heating exemption.

Saskatchewan typically has the biggest per person rebate of any provinces because they use a lot of gas and pay a lot more than other provinces. Collecting less on gas would put them closer to the average rebate.

I liked the video but I think there is a lot of confusion about why someone might make a temporary exception for home heating oil specifically. Heating oil is old tech and the people using tend to be poorer, the price has nearly doubled over the past few years, so it costs about 4 times as much to heat your home with heating oil without the carbon tax as it does to heat it with natural gas with the carbon tax. There is still plenty of price pressure for those people to switch their home heating systems and programs to help them do it. That context is important. It was still probably a political decision but its not completely ridiculous and no one with natural gas heating would want to trade places with someone with heating oil.

So Poilievre the bad guys here are the big oil companies gouging Canadians it's overcharging us 75 cents a litre.
