You actually don’t need to drop the tank at all. If you’re lucky and don’t have one of the California emissions PZEV tank, all the others have under both rear seats an unscrew-able lid that gives accessories the fuel pump for replacement. The California versions are sealed and hence no access to change the fuel pump. But this also means no smell issues, which is coming from most likely an old & possibly cracked seal around that lid. My father’s w211 just had this smell and I lifted the rear seats and lo and behold the drivers side lid was drenched with sludgy gas and the source of the smell. And he had just filled it up to the top. Told him to floor it for a bit and keep the tank under full until I’ll have time to order and replace the seal.

Thank you for sharing your experience. That is a good idea.
In my case I checked for the Leaks from the gasket of the fuel sender unit (Behind the driver's seat) there were no leaks from there. At the end of the video, at 20:41 you can see it leaking somewhere from the top to that deep area.
I didn’t check the fuel pump gasket on the fuel pump (located behind the passenger side.) because I thought it was too far to leak from there.
      I’ll probably check it someday.
So far I fill the tank 80% with no smell at all.

@@bigboycars I too am suspecting it might not be the seal either in our case. As far as I know there are 3 total possibilities of failure points in that area: the seal/ring, the pump itself, and the gasoline feed rubber hose! Especially if it’s coming down from the top that’s a good indicator. I’ve seen some replace that hose and apply some permatex sealant (similar to seal all but make sure to use the gasoline resistant high temp permatex) to assure no more leakage. Seeing this is not a frequent occurrence I wouldn’t mind doing all of the above as a preventative maintenance anyway.

Did you fix the gas smell, yours is doing the same as mine.
I believe it's the gas vent on the top of the tank.
You get more gas coming in when tank full if you go in reverse up your driveway it flows over the top top the tank.

    • @bigboycars

No, so I didn't fix it so far. I'm Just adding around 14 gallons when the gas light comes on. The dealership rejects the repair. Said the recall is expired. So I'm thinking the repair cost involved a new tank and labor. 2,5 k probably.

Hello, thanks for the video. I have an 05 E500 w 67k mi. rec'd a gas cap warning w CEL. switched cap but i did notice gas smell inside when tank was full. haven't checked under seat to see if gas is leaking like in the video. luckily i have a yr to try to fix to pass inspection. it appears bad gas cap is not the cause of CEL. haven't checked codes but i surmise it will be for evap leak.

I will never buy a Mercedes’ again. We had a 2006 e350 leaking gas tank years, we could smell gas in the car but not until it started to spill under the car did we take the car. The dealer stated that the tank was covered under recall that is not a way to do business. The car could have caught fire with a small spark. This used to be our Family car serious Safety violation. Never was notified by Mercedes prior to seeing the obvious gas coming out from under the car. Never again will I buy another Mercedes Benz.

    • @bigboycars

I personally think there is a small crack or fitting on the connection where is an evaporative system breather hose connected to the top. You can find pictures of a used tank on eBay listings and see what I'm talking about. Don't think there is a crack in the tank itself. But to confirm it I need to drop the tank. Guess what? I'm not gonna do that. Instead, I fill up the tank a little bit less. 2 bars less. or 14-15 gallons instead of 18 and there is no smell. Or if I know I'll gonna be floring I'll fust fill it to the top. And car will quickly bring that lvl down))))))
