Just got back from another great camping trip at Mount Mitchell State Park campground! Things are mostly the same -- just a couple of notes:
    1. Drinking water is only available from the bathroom sinks in the campground, and from a water fountain / bottle filling station at the new restrooms in the summit parking lot.
    2. The restaurant remains closed but I was told it would open sometime this October. The building itself will look much the same.
    3. You are not allowed to hang hammocks from the trees in the campground. If you wish to sleep in a hammock, you'll need to place a self supported hammock stand on the tent pad in your site.

Very thorough, used this vid to select my campsite reservation. Much appreciated!

Great! Hope you enjoy your visit. Beautiful trails all around!
On my last visit I ended up staying much longer than intended due to the weather not cooperating with my hiking plans, but the clear morning I finally got at the summit was worth it! All the rangers and employees I interacted with were very nice.
Pro tip: don’t drive up the parkway at night in rain and fog. It was horrifying! 😅

Excellent! I always have trouble picking a site and the reservation system only gives you a map and a couple of photos. I hope to do this at more parks when it’s practical.

Nice video brother of the park campsites. Q- Do you recall which sites may have trees for hammocks? Maybe 3 & 4

Thanks - hope it helps folks pick a site. None of them are ideal for hammocks in the trees, but I’d say 2 would work the best. 3 has some well spaced trees but not much room for a tarp. A hammock stand on the tent pad would be fine on any, I think. I’d check with the park office for the official policy - a ranger comes by each site every night to check on things.

    Can you car camp anywhere?

Within the state park, vehicles can be parked overnight with registration required, but this is for those hiking to backcountry sites outside the park (not camping in the vehicle). The easiest of those to access would probably be the Commissary Ridge area from the park office, but that’s a couple miles to hike in and the area may currently be closed due to bear activity.
Those areas within Pisgah National Forest are managed by the USFS. I don’t have any current information or personal experience with car camping near Mount Mitchell. This link may have some info with ranger districts to contact:

Good video, but they don’t have any potable water. Bring your own water. They are in the process of renovating the water treatment plant, the water now is not treated.

Thanks - so the water from that spot under the sink in the women’s side of the campground restroom is non-potable as well? The suggestion to use that for drinking water was from a ranger during a stay a few years ago.

@@pleasantfiction I asked about that spigot under the women’s sink and they said it’s from the same source and is not drinkable. The entire water system is not filtered, nor ozonated.

@@conchd Thanks for your comment - I’ll try to add a note at that point in the video and update the description.

I contacted the park office today and asked about the water situation. The lady I spoke with said the water from the restrooms at the campground was still OK. She said the restrooms at the summit were currently closed as they were installing a new septic system. She said hopefully the summit restrooms would be open by the time I return for another visit in late August.
So as far as I can tell after confirming with the park office today, you can still get drinking water from the campground bathroom as I mentioned in the video.

That said, I will plan on bringing drinking water and my Sawyer gravity filter setup just in case.
      Thanks again for your comments!
