Glad I found this! I've been reading Howard's work since the early '70s. Now that I'm retired and have the time, I'm going back and re-reading it. Still just as enjoyable to me now as it was years ago. Thanks for posting these videos!
Another thing most people don't know, is that after the Great Cataclysm, Lemurian Refugees who sailed east after the fall of Lemuria would make it to the landmass that would become North America and interbreed with the Picts there to eventually form the Native American cultures of later eras, and is exactly why the Picts of the Eastern and Western worlds differ from one another. With those in the Far West having more Asiatic traits thanks to said Lemurian Refugees compared to those of Hyboria that would seemingly intermix with Neanderthal blood there that would give them their more short and stout bodies. At least until the end of the Hyborian Age where they would mix with other cultures and peoples, with the last of their unblemished kin within the Pictish Wilds also eventually migrating and becoming the more white-washed Picts of history we know generations after this Age, simply through interbreeding with some straggling Cimmerian people of western Cimmeria and even the Vanir coming from Vanaheim.
I do eventually plan to make a video about the Picts myself to describe this, since they are my favorite race within the Hyborian Age and there's a lot to them that most people don't seem to know about.

During 20's and 30's the knowledge on Picts were limited compared to today and Howard imagined Picts as an imaginative backward and primitive race that was lost in time while he envisioned Cimmerians as the ancestors of Celts. However we know that Picts are actually a celtic or pre-celtic people very different from Howard's depiction and they are the real ancestors of Scots while Cimmerians are actually a nomadic step people linked to Scythians.
Aye, although Howard's father was Jewish he channeled his mother's Scots Irish heritage and stories into Conan. He also must have read Gaelic stories about the struggle for domination of Alba between the Scoti coming over from Ireland and the aboriginal Picts.
the Special effects & production values on this movie are amazing
As a fan of lots of different fantasy stories, many built on their own worlds I have to say that in my humble opinion, REH and his hyborean age is the most well documented and thought out alternate reality. The ability of Howard to create a world that we care about with or without its spectacular characters is a testament to his ability. It’s too bad he wasn’t able to stay with us and continue to create for a longer period of time. What a world, what a time for adventure, pure genius as far as I can see it.

REH loved the Cooper's stories of Hawkeye and frontier life in Notheast and Midwest. He mixed Cooper's depictions of Native Americans with what little known of Picts of his time. Picts painted their skins blue and had tattoos.

This is confusing. This picts are the same picts from real world history? I thought the picts where the celts. Witch the romans named picts or painted. Are this a whole difrent picts? If so then whom where the celts in Conan's lore?
Your spot on however, in the world of Conan the Celts are the descendants of the cimmerians, while the Picts are kind of like generic savages, Howard based them on writings of little people in Celtic myths and drew from neanderthals and native Americans
@@Alexanderscott90from what I’ve read apparently when the calamity happened and the land mass split into different masses, apparently the Picts ended up becoming the descendants of Native Tribes.

What if any thing does the history of Doggerland and Hyboria play a role in the early history of humans in particular Scandinavian, Norwegian, Danes and Picts.

Tbf only a small number are picts here in Alba the rest of us are Celts only scots from the north east are picts we also have an influence of Scandinavian with some of our islands celebrating it every year!

Confusing fictional Picts with the _Cruith_ with history. Not the same thing.
Actually in bran mak morn a Conan book in the same universe the picts are of Caledonia an are under attack by the Romans an has to unite with their old enemies the Norse and celts. It's a good read heavily recommend

To call the picts as a civilization is a bit of a misnomer... there is nothing left of them no writings or marks or dwellings or whatever. Their only contribution was that they were mentioned in the Roman chronicles 😁😁😁
Not quite . Mcalpin unified the pics with the Scoti and became the first ruler of Scotland. Pics carved into stone and worked metal.

@@ComboMuster just go read some Scottish history. It's full of really fun facts. Also there's still a good amount of pictish DNA in Scotland to this day. If you want to dive into some crazy stuff look up scythians . People drinking blood from skulls , and a war cult. All these scifi writers use ancient civilizations.

As a Scot, I take umbrage to the character assassination visited upon my ancestors: the Picts.
Howard's Picts have practicaly nothing to do with real Picts what so ever. Word Pict have latin origin and it just mean, that they were painting/tattooing their bodies. Howard most likely based them on (mostly) mix of native American tribes.

You know Robert E Howard took a lot of inspiration for making his own version of the Picts a blend of the real life Picts and Native American elements It's a fantastic idea he has a lot interesting characters who are picts One who lives during the time of king kull And a final one who lives fighting against the Romans. 💪🗡🪓🏹⚔️🔥💀

Another source you might not be aware of were the Igorots of Americas then colony the Philippines who were painted (tattooed) headhunters of his era
For me, I don't see any connection with real life Pics and Howard's Picts. Some artists draw Howard's Picts as looking like Native Americans, mostly Iroquois. That certainly matches the flint weapons and stalking war tactics which Picts used in "Beyond the Black River." Their use of blood sacrifices and reverence for large cats, however, remind me more of Meso-Americans. I think Howard's Picts -- if they resemble any real life tribal identity -- are maybe Aztecs and Mayans. The big take away is that Howard just liked the name "Picts" I think.
