  • This one is a chatty and longer art vlog, to give you a more unfiltered look into my thoughts day to day. I think completed work and art you love comes from building a good practice. And for me a lot of that developed through reading and studying other artists. I did my best to share my favorite books in the studio and how I use them. Plus a few personal insights on selecting artist books, and what will really help form a process within your work. Otherwise it's been a mix of sunlight, rain and snow over here, and the Wiener dogs are soaking up any warmth they can get.
    Books I mentioned:
Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland
    Creative Authenticity by Ian Roberts
Discipline is Destiny by Ryan Holiday
Vermeer The complete works by Taschen
Caspar David Friedrich and the subject of landscape by Joseph Leo Koerner
Lois Dodd (Contemporary Painters series) by Faye Hirsch
    Richard Estes Voyages
    Euan Uglow The complete paintings
Antonio Lopez Garcia paintings and sculptures
Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist
Art/Work by Heather Darcy and Jonathan Melber

This video is exactly what I needed right now. I have been so bogged down in the fear of wondering if I'm going in the right direction with my work, and if it even matters, but your thoughts have helped me shift my attitude. I will continue to remind myself that any art work we actually do, is good, worthwhile work. I really appreciate you sharing your insight of these things, as well as your painting processes! Keep it up - you do beautiful work! ❤

Thank you, I'm really happy to hear that the video helped a little! Making art can bring about fear sometimes, for me too. We need courage to create because it so honestly shows our level of skill or what's going on in our head and hearts. Few things are more transparent. So it's easy to doubt it or think it needs a different direction. Just keep working on it, one piece at a time, its valuable because you alone made it. 🌼

19:54 This is exactly what I meant when I commented on a previous video of yours! Seeing how another artist works is so powerful when you’re trying to figure out your own creative path. It’s cool to see other successful people actually do things, read about it, study their routines, not just see their work but to see the process behind it. Loved the video, added some of the books to my wishlist as well!
Also we have the same book about Richard Estes ;)
Keep going Maria! Love your work.

Just so good, Maria, I love your finished work. It's true to life and full of realism so you recognise the subjects but I like how it's still also obviously a painting and you can see the mark making and brush strokes. Thank you for showing those books. I've not seen those before especially the non-pictorial ones...may just have to hunt a couple down 😊 Looking forward to your next process for another WIP 👍🥰

This was so lovely to listen to Maria, and well done in finishing your piece! I love how it turned out! I'm also glad you had such a beautiful interaction with the other artists and that they shared their love for your work with you. It is so precious and I do agree - when people give me compliments...I'm always so awkward in responding 😅.
Thank you for sharing the artbooks you love - I enjoy that you have artbooks that aren't just visual artbooks, but also focuses on the artistic mindset. Thank you for sharing those books!
I loved your comments about art we didn't make, movies we love and music that moves us - how these things can seem magical to us compared to our own art / works and how we forget about the early mornings those artists had to start working, or the chaotic working space or household chores they didn't get to. This is important to remember, otherwise we live with the unrealistic idea of an ideal life.
Ps. I also LOVE that you added your name on the chalkboard! Such a lovely and cleaver easter egg!!

    • @mariasisul
      @mariasisul  10 місяців тому +1

Maybe one day we will figure out how to respond to compliments 😂 I'm so glad you enjoyed the book list. I find those first three have changed my whole approach to what I do. And maybe I'm just trying to validate my own experience with art making being imperfect but hopefully that sentiment rings true for others also.
It would've been an opportunity missed if I didn't hide my name in all those words! Thank you for watching and the lovely comment 😊

I recently discovered Richard Estes, I saw four of his paintings in a museum and spend half an hour just looking at them. I was thinking about buying one of his artbooks. Seeing you flip through one made me ad this one to my wish list.

I love the finished painting of your sisters and brother! Its realism is so vibrant! Great job on that. Also, thank you for elaborating on your answer to my query about the sta-wet palette. That was very kind of you. My studio currently doesn't have enough ventilation for me to paint in oils in the winter so I thought of switching to acrylics. That's why I asked. Speaking of books; years ago I picked up Janson's History of Art at a used book store. An art teacher of ours highly recommended it and said that one would get the equivalent of a PhD in Art History after reading that book. Under normal circumstances this book would be about $75.00 brand new, but I found it for $25.00 in excellent condition. The used book store had it listed at $50.00 but had the art section at half price. A $25.00 PhD!

Enjoyed seeing your process. I was thinking how you would handle the roof. Loved the extra colours you added to make it interesting in its own right. The contrast values seemed spot on. Skin tones were amazing. I work with graphite, so it's all about values for me. I could relate to spending time looking at what you've done and figuring what works and what you need to do.

Love! your work is so inspiring! I recently got a sta wet palette too and something i learned while doing research was to add pennies to the bottom so mold keeps at bey. IDK if it really works but since copper has antibacterial properties. I put a handful to see haha Also the Blue's Clues portion of the video - YES! haha the handy dandy notebook. good times haha.
