As with Mnozil Brass, the trio captivates audiences with the wide-ranging repertoire featured on its debut album. The selection of melodies starts with a gently pulsating interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s soul classic “Isn’t She Lovely.” Three melodic strands are intimately intertwined in an apotheosis of sensuality. Sparks of eroticism are already stirring. After this, the three musicians bring together motifs from every direction and taste. This is important in times when the political margins are becoming more and more radicalized. Wieder, Gansch & Paul are aware of these ambivalent views and accept, even celebrate them. The heterogeneity of their new repertoire is best described using a more dated term: potpourri.
The combo wins over audiences with earthy works such as “Der Vielharmonische” (“The Multi-Harmonic”) and “Where Is Ahmad” by Gansch and Paul, as well as a great deal of repertoire by others. For example, “Tombo in 7/4” by the highly talented Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira. Originally part of his legendary 1970s album “Fingers,” in 1997 it was turned into an international hit, “Samba de Janeiro,” by German Euro-dance group Bellini. Wieder, Gansch & Paul catapult the summer anthem of 1997 back into local contexts, and suddenly the exotic Brazilian groove has an appealing, alpine touch that effortlessly generates existential certainty for locals. Even George Michael’s funky dance-pop number “Faith” moves in a radically new direction. In this idiosyncratic reading, the mainstream masterpiece emanates a turbo New Orleans marching band groove.
Of course, some tear-jerking passages also charm listeners. Franz Schubert’s “Ständchen” conjures up erotic apparitions. Henri Mancini’s sublime “Days of Wine and Roses” takes us back to times when only chorus and orchestra could channel outpourings of emotion. Of course, Wieder, Gansch & Paul do without elaborate equipment. “In a trio nothing’s missing. Everything works itself out,” says Thomas Gansch about the dreamy sense of ensemble with his fellow musicians in this wonderful ballad. Tasteful pathos prevails in the interpretation of Udo Jürgens’s deeply contemplative “If I Never Sing Another Song,” which Sammy Davis Jr. and Shirley Bassey each sang exquisitely. The present trio version is also official. Fatalism and agony carry on the most intimate of flirts here.
Wieder, Gansch & Paul launch into outer space with the measured pace of Alexander Courage’s “Star Trek” theme, entangle themselves in nostalgic dreams of the monarchy in “Emperor Bluesette” and ride over the Croatian prairie, where “Winnetou” was once filmed, to the wonderfully childlike melody of “The Breeze and I.” They courageously explore the potential for innovation and deviance in these pieces, without falling into the trap of seeming phony. Yes, you could say that with conviction they do all they can to resist the pressure to achieve perfection. This is about music, not juggling notes. Last but not least, this consummate trio leads listeners into Chuck Mangione’s “Land of Make Believe,” a magical land that indulges a quirky anti-universe. It was all recorded and edited in analogue format at the Casino Baumgarten. It all stays better.
