I have a Maytag washer model A408 that was made in 1978 and it is still going strong after 36 years!! Your 1996 machine is still just a baby in Maytag years.
My set is still running like a champ. I service them every year. I Love them! Never had any problems with them growing up either. These are truly nostalgic and well made!
I love the Maytag dependable care washer! Especially the first generation models with thee agitators that looked very much like the late 70's early 80's models. They still had the filter in thee agitators. Even some of the first models' agitators were still in Maytag blue. Which are very hard to find. They still are being used in many people's homes.
very nice. the water level is filled up all the way to the top. i love it! this is how it should be. new top load washers are junks! water level is usually half way filled up on large load. let's bring back the old washers!
DARN I miss my parents' Maytag washer and dryer!! The dryer was a '76 and the washer was a '79 and I sold 'em to settle their estate. Shoulda' kept them! :)
Love the sound of a good ole Maytag! And I use Purex! Cleans my clothes just fine and costs alot less than Tide and more of the expensive brands.. Thanks for sharing!
Here in 2024. Found this set in our house when we moved in 2022. Dryer stop heating up in the summer but washer still going strong. We're only getting rid of it because we need something bigger. Truly American made!
After 25 years of heavy use and reliability our same 1996 washer finally broke down smoking. The repair man is coming today to look at it today. The smoke smelled like a spent electric motor so it may be a costly repair which depending on cost we may do because, unlike modern washers, this Maytag Dependable Care machine is almost indestructible.
Great old machines. The lint filter inside the dasher worked surprisingly well, drawing water in through the dasher post and pumping out through the flair between the vanes by centrifugal effect.
We have a Dependable Care Plus washer(water level is variable between 5 levels, control knob is different), and an early 90's Maytag dryer. They run like a charm.
That Maytag washer has the "orbital" transmission, it has a shorter stroke agitation action. That replaced the "helical-drive" transmission, that had the longer stroke agitation action. If loaded properly, this (orbital) Maytag washer does a very nice job of cleaning dirty laundry!
The interesting thing is the basic design of this machine dates back to 1966 (technically 1956/1957, was a revision in 1966), essentially remained unchanged until 2006. If Maytag kept making them this way (if they were still in business, and not a name), they’d be # 1, would >force< companies to make a quality machine since they would be put out of business, or their sales would be reduced greatly since they would have a product that wouldn’t be able to keep up. The only things that were cheapened unfortunately was the tub seals in the later years, a few of the o-rings in the transmission. Tub seals very rarely went bad on the older models, if a tub seal did leak from sitting for awhile (had that happen with my Maytag A606), just put a few pots of boiling water into soften the rubber and you were good to go.
There is a separate drain connection off camera near the floor the washer is hooked to. Next year I plan to start remodeling and finishing downstairs. The laundry room will be its own room, with white kitchen cabinets, stainless steel sink, and I will install the in wall plumbing hookups/drain that way for a nice neat finished room.
Oh yeah, also wanted to say that the vinegar is a pretty cool alternative because I have heard many say that fabric softener overtime with towels can prevent them from absorbing water properly.
Orbital (short-stroke) transmission in this Maytag. The Maytag helical-drive transmission had the (long stroke) action. If not overloaded, the orbital transmissions do a great job cleaning clothes.
I have two Maytag washers from the early 90s. The only thing I had to change on them since we're the belts once. I stopped using liquid fabric softners because they grow a gel on the inside parts which form mold over time. Unfortunately, Maytag stopped offering parts for these workhorses soon causing these to be scrapped! I was very fortunate to find one load level switch used on ebay to save my one machine that was overfilling all of a sudden. I bought it and switched it out now I'll have it for another 25 years. Don't overload and leave top open when done to prevent rusting inside.
I have the 1995 Maytag washer/dryer pair, Model Numbers LAT9235AAE & LDG5005AAE. The timer and belts on the washer have been replaced twice over the last 20 years. I started repairing all of my appliances myself in 2009. In 2011, I replaced the drive motor on the dryer for the first time. Twenty years after I purchased them new, they still run very smooth. Every repair man and appliance parts counter I have talked to told me it is better to keep these classic Maytag machines going instead of buying a brand new other-brand machine. When I purchased these machine's new in 1995, I also purchased a Maytag Dishwasher with a built in disposer. I regret leaving that Maytag Dishwasher in my first house when I sold it.
That is correct. I use white vinegar for all my wash loads. My laundry is much softer and more comfortable to wear, towels absorb water like they were new, and removes built up detergent and fabric softener in clothes that makes them look dull. I also noticed much less lint after drying too.
cool deal, ya know for as along as I can remember, we just use those sheets in the dryer and I guess it seems the towels are still doing just fine, many of them we have had since the 90s. Curious, why not just have the washer drain into the sink right next to it?
Yes I agree, most front loaders are crap. Thank goodness for Miele...long lasting and energy efficient. Your maytag is a nice machine I was just surprised how much water it took in.
We used to have a washer and dryer like that at my mom and dad's house, only our washer we used to have had only three temperatures and didn't have a detergent dispenser. They were really nice laundry machines. ^_^
The basic design of this washer goes back to 1958 NOT 1985 in the early 1990's the shortened the agitaion stroke but this is still technically a helical drive transmission. In a sense all 1958 circa 2003 Dependable Care Maytag's have orbital transmissions in the fact that the motor turns one way for agitation and then reverses and causes the whole transmission to revolve for the spin cycle. The basic design of the dryer dates from 1976 when the discontinued the Halo of Heat models
I have model LAT8414AAE with the matching LDE8824ACE dryer, not sure but I think it's about a 2000 or 2001 model. Bought the set last year for $100 & it's by far the best washer & dryer I've ever owned. It's developing an intermediate leak around the water valve but for now it's no big deal. Just hope it's many more years before parts eventually become discontinued because I don't plan on ever buying another one..
1:43 i just noticed the dryer's timer turns counterclockwise instead of the normal clockwise; i can tell because less dry is to the left of more dry instead of to the right
I have this same washer, and it keep it for as long as i can. The last of the Maytag Corp. good washers before Whirlpool bought them, and turned them into modern Whirlpool junk. Maytag is now just a name attached to a common Whirlpool,no longer a well built machine, such as this one.. You have got the best, hold on to it !!!!
Not really Whirlpool's fault. US Goverment made residential appliances to be more efficient and since recently they are also doing that with commercial appliances. Maybe President Trump can propose things around as he is demanding American Steel.
That Maytag washer has the "orbital" transmission with the short-stroke agitation. The "pitman drive" transmission that Maytag used to make had a longer-stroke agitation, that I actually preferred. But....if the "orbital" transmission Maytag washers are not overloaded, they give a good/clean wash for sure!
Web Surfin The "Orbital" Transmission and the "Helical Drive" Transmissions are both are helical drive transmissions, the only difference is that the orbital has a shorter stroke then the original helical transmission (aka Pitman Drive transmission) If you take the front off a Pitman Drive Maytag and an Orbital Drive Maytag they both look same and other than the Orbital having a shorter agitation stroke, they both operate the same! Both agitate when the reversible motor is running in one direction and then turn and lock on themselves when the motor runs in the other for spinning. This is why both transmissions have a counterweight, because the whole transmission, whether Pitman or Orbital, spin with the washtub during the spin cycle.
Thanks for the clarification! A family member of mine just bought a "reconditioned" Maytag "dependable care" washer just like the one in this vid. If it's not over-loaded, it does a great job washing the clothes clean. I'm sure it will last a long time.
I have a 1990 Maytag washer and dryer the control panel is brown and the washer housing is white. My set has rows of push buttons in brown it has been very dependable over the years. The only thing I have changed on my dryer was the rollers and heating element.
What is it with Maytag's and short rinse cycles? The laundromat I go to has a rinse cycle of maybe 2 or so minutes. That's hardly enough time to get everything circulated if you have a full load.
@Sharkie626 I see what you are talking about. That is definitely an effect of my camera, like the shutter speed or some processing since I was running full auto on my camera. It's still the same speed, also evidenced by the frequency of the splashing as well.
@vintageappliguy Awesome. Thanks for the history on this, as I've always wanted to know more about these washers and dryers. Like I said, I am more of a Kenmore/Whirlpool guy, and I am still learning about the Maytags.
We have model LAT8234AAE from 1997 timeframe. Both washer and dryer look the same as this video. The clothes don't seem to be getting clean anymore, so my wife wants to take the tub out and give it a good cleaning. She LOVES the washer and dryer, so doesn't want a different one. We can't figure out how to get the front or the top off, to get to the tub to even clean or remove. Can you provide any assistance how to do that?
The first "Whirltags" were good. Whirlpool became "Whirlfool" when they stopped making the direct drive top load washers. The new Maytags are crap. This is an authentic Maytag set made by the real Maytag Co in Newton, Iowa.
before whirlpool took over almost every brand there is. My fridge is a 20+ year old estate brand(now whirlpool) and only thing I had to do so far was recently replace the light switch. My gas stove is also 20+ years old. It is a caloric heritage series. only issue with it is the timer sucks.
I was at Home Depot last night (playing with the crappy washers, cuz why not) and there was this Amana set. It was extremely cheap (about $200 for the washer and #300 for the dryer), and when I lifted the lid on the washer, it slammed on the control board so hard, it MOVED THE WASHER like a few INCHES when it opened! I could practically lift it was so light! CHINA PRIDE!!!!
Cool! I have a similar pair of machines but with the electric dryer. They were installed at two other friends houses before I got them and they run like champs.
Beautiful! We have had that same washer since the late 80's and just now, in late july of 2021 we are having a issue with the cold water not working on it... repair guy said it was ready for the trash and not worth fixing. What do you think?
Most likely a fill solenoid valve which I'm sure you can find on eBay or at an online appliance parts store. Throw that in and I'm sure the Maytag would still end up outlasting a new machine that you would have purchased.
@spatsbear2 Thanks very much. I love the amount of work and attention to detail you put into refurbishing and it's great you share information with others.
Yeah I use the White Vinager when I am washing my own towels and my own pair of jeans. I still use the downey softner on mother's clothing and my shirts due to its nice smell on them
Are some of these older machines designed without neutral drain systems or is the machine still at risk for transmission damage due to water being spun out of the tub?
Do you have a video of how to disassemble and clean? Ours Stinks. I can see build up coming out of liquid bleach cup but it doesn't Seem like it pops out. Also to take out the drum to clean in case there's a moldy sock in there.
I have a maytag dependable care washer not sure what year well the water fill is leaking a drop every minute or so I know the water inlet valvue is probably leaking I just need to know how to figure out what one I'm supposed to order for it I know how to put it in.
@Sharkie626 That is what I thought. I just remember this design being frok the early - mid 80s. Everyone I knew growing up had a Kenmore or Whirlpool, so Maytags are new to me. Thanks.
I know this is an 8.5 year old video but how did you get the lid hinge area so clean? I have a 1994 Dependable Care that is almost identical to this, but it really needs to be cleaned. There’s a massive dirt build up in the corners right underneath the nylon ball hinges and I can’t really figure how how to clean it without removing the lid, which I also don’t know how to do.
I was just seeing who still had these. I have this exact set. Just replaced my dryer wheels and belts and stuff last year. Never had any problems out of these. Ever. I keep them maintenance every year.
10:00 Kitty wanna go for a ride? Seriously, the design of the perforated dasher post used centrifugal effect during the wash and rinse cycles to pump water through the clothes. does this machine still a lint filter in the dasher post like older models? The slight imbalance appears to be well controlled by the suspension.
bad ass washer machine will always be remembered as a heavy duty dependable easy to use if ever breaks you can get your clothes out and an easy repair new washer lasts only five years if your lycky
I have a Maytag washer model A408 that was made in 1978 and it is still going strong after 36 years!! Your 1996 machine is still just a baby in Maytag years.
I got my new maytag in 1995, still runs like new. These are the last of the good ones.
My set is still running like a champ. I service them every year. I Love them! Never had any problems with them growing up either. These are truly nostalgic and well made!
I have the electric dryer combo not gas tho. Model LAT9605AAE
The Maytag A806 washer. The BEST of the Maytags.Loved the Maytag Repairman's commercials.
Pure quality man, when it was proud to be American made.
Nowadays...
CHINA PRIDE!!! 🇨🇳

i just bought the exact same machine, maytag are probably the best. i like the fact that they are designed to be repaired.

Yeah back then they had comercials about how the repair man was lonely.
He ain't lonely today thats all I can say.
No pun intended

@HD41117 Just car wax, like Turtle Wax brand. and I used Novus Plastic Polish on the controls panels.

I have a vintage Maytag washer and dryer at my school and it does that same agitation and it locks the sliding washer door
This is a very nice pair! I love the wash action!
@vintageappliguy Awesome. Thanks for the history on this, as I've always wanted to know more about these washers and dryers.
Like I said, I am more of a Kenmore/Whirlpool guy, and I am still learning about the Maytags.
By this time these machines had indented side panels meaning thinner steel. Still better than anything being sold today except maybe Speed Queen.
YEA. I GOT THAT WASHER AND I TOTALLY AGREE, "WHEN MAYTAG WAS ABOUT QUALITY". YOURS LOOK BRAND NEW, GREAT JOB ON THE MAINTENANCE.
My neighbor has a dependible care nut not just a ordinary maytag dependible care. It is a maytag dependible care PLUS
We have model LAT8234AAE from 1997 timeframe. Both washer and dryer look the same as this video. @DanteFox what do you mean? I said thet were both from 1996.
No, this was Maytag. Whirlpool didn't acquire Maytag until 2006.
The first "Whirltags" were good. Whirlpool became "Whirlfool" when they stopped making the direct drive top load washers. The new Maytags are crap. This is an authentic Maytag set made by the real Maytag Co in Newton, Iowa.
The sad thing is that they don't make good washing machines anymore.
does the vinegar get rid of the Detergent smell too? I hope not! I hope it's a mix of the 2 smells
before whirlpool took over almost every brand there is. My fridge is a 20+ year old estate brand(now whirlpool) and only thing I had to do so far was recently replace the light switch. My gas stove is also 20+ years old. It is a caloric heritage series. only issue with it is the timer sucks.
Where did this two Maytag appliances was made in which country?
United States in Newton, Iowa.
***** And what type of cat does Leeah look like?
United state
I was at Home Depot last night (playing with the crappy washers, cuz why not) and there was this Amana set. 10:26 The kitty 😺
oh very nice! Mind if I ask (doesn't need to be right away) for a Before vid of the place before any work is done?
What kind of wax do you use to keep the surfaces shiny? Using white vinegar in place of fabric softener/conditioner is a good tip, too. Thanks.
How long take normal cycle on this machine?
Cool! I have a similar pair of machines but with the electric dryer. They were installed at two other friends houses before I got them and they run like champs.
i like your cat
Looks almost exactly like my Maytag LDE8704ACE dryer, which I needed to take apart and refurb last month.
Thanks, I knew your insight would help. After talking it over with my sister, we have decided to see if we can get it fixed.
I have a 1992 Maytag and I have no plans on getting rid of it seeing how most machines are junk today.
@spatsbear2 Thanks very much. I love the amount of work and attention to detail you put into refurbishing and it's great you share information with others.
This washer does give you a really good cleaning care
My parents got those as a wedding gift in 1995. Still strong. Dryer is noisy though
Belts and wheels kits available. To stop squealing sounds.
Great video. Nicely maintained.
Yeah I use the White Vinager when I am washing my own towels and my own pair of jeans. I still use the downey softner on mother's clothing and my shirts due to its nice smell on them
Just out of curiosity, if you can remember, what were ya talking about in the section of video that you fast-forwarded?
Awesome set!
My grandparents had that washer. For some reason it over flows it and they had to get insurance for another Maytag washer.
im not sure what makes the washer a dependable care washer because its agitation strokes are more frequent than a maytag A700's
I don't use fabric softener either, I use Lysol Laundry Sanitizer now and it works good
this is also my favorite washers damn runs very good
I have a maytag dependable care washer not sure what year well the water fill is leaking a drop every minute or so I know the water inlet valvue is probably leaking I just need to know how to figure out what one I'm supposed to order for it I know how to put it in.
Everyone I know has bought a new Samsung or LG ended up hating them. Love my Dependable Care just be gentle with the timer.
I prefer using liquid fabric softeners instead of dryer sheets. Are you allergic to softeners or have sensitive skin?
Great video, Spats. My name is Marshall.
I have that same washer. It came with the house my wife and I bought. Can't seem to find the owners manual anywhere. Any help?
@Sharkie626 That is what I thought. I just remember this design being frok the early - mid 80s.
Everyone I knew growing up had a Kenmore or Whirlpool, so Maytags are new to me.
Thanks.
My grandma has a Maytag washing machine that is much similar to that one.
I still have and use that washer. Do you happen to have the users manual? I’m looking for one. Thanks!
Unfortunately no, we donated this pair and included the materials with them.
I believe the internals of your washer go back to 1985, since it has the Orbital transmission.
It’s so nice to see these machines kept in such good condition! Thanks for sharing!!
I’m curious to know: Do you still own them currently?
Sorry for the late reply, no, we replaced them with the 2015 Speed Queen set and a late 70s Kenmore set. We donated this pair.
I was just seeing who still had these. I have this exact set. Just replaced my dryer wheels and belts and stuff last year. Never had any problems out of these. Ever. I keep them maintenance every year.
My dad hates fabric softner too. He can't handle it because the smell will give him a headache.
@spatsbear2 It seemed to happen once the towels gathered around it again.
10:00 Kitty wanna go for a ride? The slight imbalance appears to be well controlled by the suspension.

I have same model, not cleaning well. I can see my agitator is only moving back and forth about 2 inches. Shouldn't it be rotating more than that?

My grandparents have a Maytag Stacked Unit from the late 1990's.
