That's when they made things to last, yeah? Still has the emergency number orange sticker on the side! Wow! ah, memories........lol 'membah when you only had to dial 4 numbers to get your neighbor on the phone? 4858, that was our number. Thank John! That's great.
Makes me miss the Western Electric candlestick rotary phone I used to have. It was made in 1973 and I bought it for $20.00 at a flea market and used it about 10 years.
The phone in this video doesn't have any Bakelite parts. The plastic parts are ABS. When that model of phone (554) was introduced in 1955 it had a Bakelite handset and a Tenite shell, but they switched to ABS for both the handset and the shell around 1960.
I have several that still work but only one in use at a time. Buy them at yard sales. I even have a tan princess rotary, but they're rare. They just never wear out unless you drop them.
No joke, back in high school I had to use a rotary phone because my cellphone battery died. I was walking home and needed to let my folks know that I missed the bus (again! :P LOL). I figured any public building would have a phone available, and sure enough, I found a church with an old rotary phone. It took me maybe a minute or two to get it to figure it out and dial the number. The audio quality wasn't too bad, all things considered. Keep in mind that this was when most payphones were being removed as cellphones became more and more popular. As far as I know, the church still has the rotary phone...and since most of the parishioners are older folks, they know how to use it ;).
sometimes when I was little I would picked it up and play dialing just to hear the rotary noise, if you know what i mean thanks for flashback....looks like a great house for some fried eggs and taters..before going fishing....
My mom had that phone in her den my dad had one too in his den we use to sneak in our parents dens and use to talk on their phone we always never got in trouble
Wonder if you can still get "ring-back" when you dial the home number and then hang up? Use to drive my folks nuts, especially when I answered first and more or less talked to myself 'til they less than politely told me to not tie up the phone.
John you want one of those phones? My father in law worked for the phone company years ago and has a bunch of them in the attic. If you want one Ill send you a pic. of what he has you can have your pick.
This is something I am totally wanting..a red one! if anyone has this phone cantact me via FB messenger...want to buy one for decor in my kitchen (dont use landline anymore but love the vintage look :)
I have 3 wired in my house the voice quality is superior to the modern push button China made junk! Fun to teach kids how to dial a phone, some can not get it, others do it right off the bat.

Those phones were built amazing well.
+RamblinAround It's called Bakelite or something like that.

It cost more to have one of them around here, than it does to have a push button!! That's the only reason my old man got rid of ours in the 70's!!☺
+805ROADKING I'm amazed at the quality....That phone has been used daily for 46 years, and there is virtually no wear signs at all on it !
LMAO @ 0:35, "what the fucks wrong wit that".
Oh Gawd! Don't get Phil started on how he can't press 1 for anything on his rotary phone!

As long as he keeps that phone, the telephone company will need to employ that woman with that headset, switchboard and all those wires..
