A trend I see with people getting back into their religion is how much more beautiful they get. I don’t know if it’s because they’re happier or looking after their self more, but their beauty just seems to shine through. You were already beautiful before you got back into Catholicism, but now you look etherial!

okay but i think it’s funny that, an example being Lucifer or Jane the Virgin, people think that it’s perfectly fine making fun of or bashing Christianity/Catholicism, but not one person can make a jab at Hinduism or any other religion without facing backlash or getting cancelled. it’s a double-standard and i think that should be called out more often in media

The more that I grow in my Catholic Faith the harder it is for me to watch any of the shows and movies that I used to. Shows that I found funny and entertaining are now cringe fests for me. I attribute this to the Holy Spirit warning me that I am polluting the Spirit and that I should feed it with better material.

One of the sisters who taught at my high school, always told us, that it's okay to watch fantasy as long as you don't play with satanic elements from those shows, books etc. She warned us about ouiji boards, spells etc, even said that you can read horoscopes for fun, but to never believe in them. I feel as long as you understand the rights and wrongs from what you are watching, and be able to tell your children to know the difference between fiction and nonfic, i think some shows are okay. Even with music, I feel like kids these days shouldn't be listening to.
P.S I found you on tik tok and I'm so glad that you are teaching basic Catholicism. As a 25 year old Catholic born and raised, I really appreciate you.

I got back to my Catholic Faith during the Lockdowns in 2020 and before that I used to be really, really leftist. I even thought I was gay. I watched a lot of LGBT-Friendly shows and movies back in the day, but since I got back into my Faith, I try to monitor what kind of media I consume, because consuming pro-lgbt is what actually made me believe I was gay in the first place. So I try to avoid these as best as possible.

This is one of the reasons I love 1930s-1950s films and TV shows, they were suitable for all, they had the best romance movies without promoting sex or debauchery, they had the best thrillers without promoting violence. Thanks to the hays code, they instilled morals into people and didn't promote debauchery as normal like today. I wish the hays code still existed tbh.

    • @mattkierkegaard9403
      @mattkierkegaard9403 2 роки тому +3

Yes, the old films portrayed sex and debauchery but did not promote them. That’s a big difference right there. Funnily enough this also seemed to benefit the films because it enabled film makers to be subtle and metaphorical 😎 I’m thinking Wells and Hitchcock here

Similar to your story, one that I originally loved was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. About the first 3 seasons were pretty good and entertaining; demons were bad guys to be killed by a good (if imperfect) person, compelling characters, funny lines, etc. After that, things went downhill. Demons became 'misunderstood' persons, her friend Willow becomes a witch and goes gay, and even eventually resurrects Buffy from heaven. As if you could bring a person out of heaven with witchcraft... (sigh).

I honestly do not understand why Anime was just thrown on at the end of the list. Anime is not a Tv show or movie, it's a specific art style that developed in Japan, specifically, it is the animation of comics or cartoons known as manga. Since it is an art medium, it has the potential to have good or bad parts to the same extent as any other show. This is not to say that oversexualization of women in particular within the genre does not exist as a historical fact, but not all shows see the need to include that as a trope in their shows or films. There are many anime films that are wholesome, for example many movies produced by Studio Ghibli. I recently watched the movie Princess Mononoke with a group of friends to discuss the strong themes underlying the film about the roles of men and women, man's relationship to nature, and different conceptions of good and evil. Other animated series such as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Avatar the Last Airbender, SpyXFamily etc, promote values and virtues that are compatible with Catholic philosophy. I belive that anime has a lot to offer as an artistic medium, and I've watched a lot of shows that discuss deep questions common to the human expirience, such as the fruitlessness of revenge, the importance of family, weather true pacifism is possible in a fallen world, etc. I am honestly disappointed to find this genre dismissed in such a superficial way, as a Catholic and a philosopher I think that before recommending something on the "do not watch list" you should put forth solid reasons. I enjoyed this video, and I agreed with a lot of the shows she took the time to discuss, but please don't just list 20 at the end and include a WHOLE ART GENRE without at least doing a quick google.

Totally agree with you. I got rid of my TV years ago and never looked back. Its a very rare event for me to go out and see a Hollywood film. ( I dont mind old black and white films pre 1960s , especially films about faith and religion, or Christian History/ Biblical movies etc ) These days I watch way to much Catholic UA-cam videos )))). Totally addictive .... and maybe some music or historical programs ... that's all I need. The rest of my day is very full ... Bible reading, ethics, apologetics, prayer, more Bible reading.....

I might be agnostic, but I still know this stuff isn't a joke. Even though I'm not religious, I still try to stick to light-hearted shows, historical dramas, Korean dramas, or documentaries (or shows like House Hunters, gotta love House Hunters lol). I still hear all the time "but I thought you weren't religious, why don't you want to watch it?" for shows like Lucifer, Twilight, Supernatural, and horror movies in general. Even shows like Real Housewives or Selling Sunset are personally off-limits because I feel like the last thing we need right now is glorifying rich people for wasting money on materialistic lifestyles.
Spirituality aside, people wonder why more and more teens and young adults have more mental health issues (myself included) when, just look, the majority of shows created for them are suuuper dark and depressing.

My dad did the same when he first gave me the books. Personally I love them in many levels, and I don't see the problem with the magic in the books since wizards in Harry Potter aren't normal people. Technically we're all muggles and incapable to perform proper magic, according to the Harry Potter world. I did get afraid for a while becauae I heard it was bad, but then I started seeing that there were even Christian topics that I could more easily understand thanks to the books. It's no surprise, since the author was also influenced by Christian authors. Whether she did it on purpose or not, she did add a lot of the Christian sentiment, and it's a shame that deviant groups started using the series as their thing.
The magic stuff is the context and it's clear that it's a different nature from ours. The real themes are inside. But yeah, some people do stick to the outer layer and try to perform real magic, which is very very bad, and just like my dad warned me before giving me the books, maybe the books should come with a precaution note reminding that it's all fiction. (Although I think it is clear from the story itself)

Don't get me wrong, I do agree. And I mostly agree with your sentiments on Harry Potter (not to mention that it promotes LGBTQ retroactively). However, what are your thoughts on J.R.R. I found Lucifer to be hilarious and also prompted me to examine Christianity again, and I’m now on my way to becoming Catholic. So it’s done some good. Of course it’s nothing like reality, except in one way. Fr Dan Rehil once encountered Satan, in a Miami beach bar, being exactly like lucifer from the series. He’s also done a fascinating interview with Michael Knowles, which is well worth watching. FR Rehil gained notoriety for banning Harry Potter from a school library and is an exorcist. Bit of a career change as he was a Wall St banker for 20 years prior to taking orders.

Alright, I understand most of those. Harry Potter, though, is too far....you can watch something without endorsing what it portrays! Yeah there's witchcraft portrayed, but it's being shown to convey a message that's acutally quite uplifting. Many aspects of it are inspired by or at least related to Christianity, and I think you can see that in the storyline - I've heard of professors at Christian schools writing theses on how the Gospel is told by ideology portrayed by HP! No disrespect to you, though I think this is going a bit far. In any case though, act in accord with what God has convicted you of!

I’m not looking for an argument or anything, but it’s one of my favorite shows, one I’ve watched many times, and I don’t recall anything explicitly anti catholic. American Horror Story might be another one. I really enjoy it, but there are certainly some anti catholic elements in certain episodes. It might even make us look a bit silly to say it’s evil in my opinion, but I respect the opinion. Hi! Have you watched Jonathan Pageau's videos on symbolism? He is Orthodox. He made a video about Lil Naz X's video. The thing is, I believe one should avoid the specificity of evil (the how-to's and lore surrounding in-show witchcraft) to avoid getting tangled up in it, but sometimes it's inevitable. The enemy wasn't fully sketched out when Christianity began, yet by the time of Dante we have a literal map of hell as part of Christian understanding. On the other hand monsters and "satanic" themes can be used in service of a an important message, like that evil doesn't get the last word. So if you are not too nerdy and don't get invested in a show's lore (like when my parents used to mix up pokémon's name to my dismay) but can take in the good morals (that there is a St. George to every dragon, as Chesterton put it) you can make it worthwhile. For instance, I have a friend that isn't a fully-fully-practicing, life-investing Catholic, but from all she knows about ouija board from the horror movies she enjoys watching, she has set on her mind that she won't let her children sit remotely close to a ouija board on her watch.

Before I became a Christian, I lived a very hedonistic life and would habitually consume entertainment (video games, movies, television, etc) at least 5 hours per day. Sometimes upwards of 16 hours per day on days that I didn't have school/work. I thought absolutely nothing of it.
When I first became a Christian through nondenominational/Protestant churches, I still continued to live hedonistically, because "As long as I believe in Jesus, that's what matters. I don't need to live differently."
Now that I have become Catholic and fallen in love with the faith, I have gotten to the point where I barely consume entertainment at all unless it is in a way that benefits a different part of my life, such as orienting myself toward God, keeping me motivated while exercising, or bonding with other people. Even when I do consume entertainment, I tend to be very particular about what kind of messages I am allowing into my life.

Something I have reflected on after watching and reading Hunger Games is the symbolism held within it and the way it compares to the early persecution of Christians under the rule of Nero. But I completely understand not wanting to watch it especially if it is affecting your mental health! It’s important to be cautious of what you bring in! Secret Life was made during a time (my time in middle and high school) where teen pregnancies were rising. I don't think it was meant to educate on teen pregnancies, but rather to make money off of something that was becoming a thing. Also, they had "Christians" on the show. I personally think that is what upset me about it the most. There was a false representation of what being a Christian is all about and the very few times Catholicism was brought up, it was to make fun of it or same something negative.
