    Super pickle is great for removing copper plating that happens when you work with brass. It can even happen accidentally when you have a contaminated jewelry pickle. With a little bit of hydrogen peroxide, you can create a great solution that will make quick work of removing that undesired plating.

    This just saved my life! Accudentally copper plated a few snake chains in old pickle and with a client coming round in an hour I had to get them back to their silver state ASAP. This worked instantly. Phew. Thank you!

      Thank you. Good luck. It could also have been silver plated. So if it was copper and just plated, the plating might be worn off.

    Can you tell me more about the peroxide you use please, here in the UK it is either 3% food grade or 3% upwards to 12% for hair colouring or bleaching, thanks.

    Is super pickle safe for Gold fill? No matter what I do my Gold Fill turns pink when soldering. I have my torch on the lowest setting and using easy 14K gold solder. My pickle has been changed so it's not that.

    I am really struggling. I have been stripping some chrome off of a very expensive solid brass faucet . It has been a nightmare. First time stripping anything and thinking maybe I did some things wrong and perhaps accidentally plated more copper onto the metal? Either way... Some of the faucet pieces came out nicely ( brass) and others still have so much rose gold on them I cannot remove it for the life of me. Tried this method last night and really didn't do much except shine the copper up. I used a stainless steel bowl to soak my pieces in my pickle. Bad? I don't have a crockpot but i did use scalding water. What am I doing wrong? Is the plating too thick?

    • @MelissaMuir

      I am afraid that I am not much help on this one as I have never tried with hardware like this. Could it be the hardware isn’t really solid copper?

    Melissa, I am doing a LARGE brass piece (9" x 14") that won't fit into my pickle pot. If I soak paper towels/cloth in the super pickle and lay it on the soldered brass, will that work as well?

    Cool...if you wanted to control it etching the copper you could try masking it with packing tape. Would this pickle als work on silver that has been accidentally copper plated?

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  6 років тому

      That is a good idea. I haven't tried that. But I sometimes have some of the gummy residue from the tape that is a pain to work with and In this case it would be easier to just polish the metal as the etching is just on the very top surface. But I can see how that would be helpful on more delicate pieces. And yes, this method will also work on silver or gold that was accidentally plated.

    Thanks for a great tip, I do have a couple of questions. Once you make your super pickle and use can you let it set to use it again at a later date and where did you get the baby crock pot. I love the pH and have been using it for a while and you can get a lot of pickle for your bucks. Again thanks for sharing and thanks for response in advance.!!

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  6 років тому

      Thanks. The super pickle will only be good for a couple of hours. After that the second Oxygen molecule is dropped and it becomes regular pickle. That is the nice thing about this because then you can just add it to your existing pickle.... assuming it isn't contaminated. Or if this is your new batch of pickle, you don't have do anything to it because it just becomes regular pickle. I think I picked up my baby crock pot at a garage sale or thrift store. I think I paid like $2. :D

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  3 роки тому

      Are you sure the hardware was brass? It may have just been plated. When I have had that happen, it turned out to be a yellow plating and it was worn down to the base metal.

    Thanks Melissa. It is truly interesting where UA-cam searches land us. I was looking for an effective chemical reaction for removing copper plating from the bore of my rifle barrel which is stainless steel. But this is good! Maybe I can mix up a slurry and the hydroscopic effects might lend to its usefulness. Can you think of any other compounds?

    • @MelissaMuir

      @@MelissaMuir I’m actually not certain but I did do an acid test because I am not sure of the metal to be honest. It didn’t corrode or turn black. It is not magnetic either. I thought it was low carat gold 10% or gold filled is my best guess. There is no marking. It was a beautiful bright yellow before I messed with it :-( . It’s possible I contaminated the pickle so I’m wondering if it’s worth trying again.

    • @MelissaMuir
      @MelissaMuir  Рік тому

      @@Heroine2me Sadly, it sounds like it was probably just a thin plating, especially if there is no karat stamp. It is hard to say without actually seeing them. I don’t know that the pickle is contaminated, but one way to check would be to throw a scrap of silver in to it and see if it copper plates. The fact that the earrings weren’t magnetic at all indicates that at least it isn’t iron.
