A bit confusing. At just before the two minute mark of the video Tom talks about placing the staff downstream of the wader. In fact he says it twice, but the video makes it appear that he is placing the staff upstream. Is it just the camera angle that makes it appear that the staff is being placed upstream?
He is talking about the angle the staff makes with the river bottom not in relation to his body. Is the handle tilted upstream or down not is the staff above him or not.
I use an old two iron with the grip removed, except for a bit on the end to grab the bottom. The club head is comfortable in my hand. I attach it to a retractable cord on my belt, and let it hang in the current behind me. No big deal.
First, stay out of the water if you can. Because waders come up to chest level, doesn't mean you should wade THAT deep. Wading staff is vital. If you fall in, wet is the least of your worries. Hydrologic force is powerful and unstoppable. No fish is worth your life. Follow Toms' advice.
Excellent presentation! Thank you!
Tom, thanks for your knowledge. Tight Lines!
Thanks Tom. It’s clear that I don’t have the same balance as I had. Excellent tips to wade safely.

Thank you for this I do have some anxiety about falling down in the river and badly injuring myself or worse.
Thanks Tom!
Tom is the man
Great tips for wadding safely!
Thanks Tom.
This is good for people who have never been on a river.
Noob question… why is there not a discussion of wearing a PFD? Do fly fishermen not wear them? Or only for stronger waters?
Some fly fishers do wear PFDs when wading and some have inflatable fly fishing vests for this. It is all about personal choice
@@orvisguidetoflyfishing There are inflatable fly fishing vests???????
What WILL they think of next!!
Thanks Tom
