Hiking 22 Miles Along the Catskills Escarpment - Great American Hikes Ep 4

- With nearly 30 overlooks, fantastic camp spots, and the tallest waterfall in the State of New York, The Escarpment Trail packs a lot in its short 22 mile length. We hiked it in May of 2021 going from West to East. On day 1 we left Jon's car at the Elm Ridge Parking Area before beginning the trail. We ascended Windham High Peak and hiked along the escarpment before camping the night near the Batavia Kill Lean-to. On day 2 we climbed Black Head Mountain, grabbed water in Dutcher Notch, passed by a plane crash, and camped the night on North Mountain at an amazing spot that overlooked the Hudson River. On our last day we passed by many overlooks including Newmans Ledge, Sunset Rock, and Artists Rock. We would also pass by the site of the old Caskills Mountain House and finished the hike at Kaaterskill Falls, the highest waterfall in the State of New York.

What a great video! I’ve camped at North Point, Burnt Acres, Mary’s Glen, many many times, all in the 70’s. That shining silver ribbon river! REI down bag, Eureka Highlight 75 w/ an Optimus 80 stove ( which works to the day) all in a Kelly D4. Colin Fletcher helped.

@19:40 I got lost in the fog at night in Harriman, On top the ever exposed Bald Rocks. Was struggling to find the trail when all the sudden, in the beam of my headlight through the thick fog, a set of glowing eyes peering back and me. The pure fright that deer instilled in us that moment was utterly tense. Hah!
Deer eyes creeped us out that first night of this trip. Always makes me laugh thinking back on it.
Love your video and audio quality. The voice-overs are really well done. I don't understand how y'all don't have more followers.

I have done the lower section Twice....
It's not exactly a "great American hike" but if you have a free few days to spend in the Catskills I'd definitely recommend the Burroughs-Panther loop in which you start with slide mountain (Catskills highest), go over Cornell and Wittenberg, and spend the night at a nice camping area halfway down Wittenburg. The next day go down past woodland valley campground and up to giants ledge and Panther. After summiting panther mountain, backtrack and go past Winnesook lake toward the slide mountain parking area. It's an excellent 2-day, 20-mile trip if you're in the area. If your looking for a more laid-back, casual trip you could go from alder lake to balsam lake mountain fire tower along Millbrook ridge and camp by the lean-to in the area (great to watch the sunset from the tower) then double back the way you came the next day. Bout 14 miles round trip but definitely one of the more remote areas of the Catskills and has plenty of great views of Alder, Beecher, and Balsam lakes. It's also mostly in deciduous forests so could be great with autumn color.
Hey! Thanks for the lengthy write up. We actually did a version of the Cornell Wittenberg Slide loop you mentioned but had to bail due to a couple of factors. We plan to go back, and of course, film it.
When coming up with the name Great American Hikes I didn’t necessarily intend for each of our hikes to be excessively grand. Rather, I’m into the idea of showcasing the wide variety of hiking across the country. A part of me kinda wishes I had named the channel something different, alas, here we are…
What are the appropriate dates you did this hike? I’m planning on doing it with my son and it looks like the perfect time
Mid may. Catching the spring bloom just right is tough and varies to a degree year over year.

I was curious about a couple things. What’s the name of your pour over coffee device because I definitely want one of those for trips. I’m a grind and pour over guy. Burr grinder of course 😉. I’m surprised someone didn’t have a twig stove with them. I’m a huge twig stove nut. I carry a trangia backup in case fires aren’t allowed.
My ears perked up when you mentioned the gila. I did trail work there for 3 summers while in college. We were in the glenwood district. That’ll be a fun trip for ya! Lookin forward to the vid.

Thanks! I use a plastic hario v60 size 01 (2.2 oz) with a Mountian Laurel Designs 570 mug (1.5 oz) that I think is now discontinued. The grinder is the Hario mini slim plus (9 oz.)
