Shadows on the Rock also tells a story about even earlier Catholicism in North America (Quebec, from the viewpoint of a young girl). Cather had great friendships across religious lines - she was a towering figure. Re-reading her work may be a better use of time than a lot of new reads. Right now, I think "Death Comes..." may be what I persuade my family book group to take up next: largely aunts and uncles in their 80s and all of us familiar with that geography and culture. We're currently zooming on "The Raven" - bio of Sam Houston.

My grandmother gave me this book once and said that it was her favorite book ever. She said it was the kind of book that you guard very carefully and only share with your closest friends. I read it on a camping trip in a hammock near Taos NM. There is nothing like reading this book and looking up seeing the landscape exactly as described.

Willa Cather! ❤️. The passage you read about the rain is exactly what monsoon in the SW American desert looks like. It is phenomenal. Also, My Antonia is the 3rd book of a trilogy that starts with O’ Pioneers which is also very good. It’s short, too.

I felt like I was literally climbing a mesa and watching the rainstorm 😍 WOW! I had no idea that My Antonia was part of a trilogy?! Thank you for the heads up!

I just finished this book and it's one of my favorites. I don't ever reread books; this will definitely be one of them. I was born and raised as a Catholic in New Mexico and her writing is impeccable because it's as if she lived here herself. You're right, she must have done so much extensive research. This book really holds a lot more value to someone like me who is from this region because it's not just a story but you're living the landscape, the climate, the culture, it's people, etc. New Mexico is not a place where change happens even over a long period of time so much of what I read in this book still holds very true today. I could go on forever but I will say that I've never read a more endearing book.

While walking my dogs this morning I met someone who was reading this book at a cafe, which is why I searched out your review. I’ve read O’Pioneers and My Antonia - loved both. This one is now on my list.

Awesome video I'm reading this book for school. My mom told me to do a UA-cam search and I found you!! Keep it up😊 (btw I'm home schooled) 😜

In 2008 I visited Canyon de Chelly. So awesome. I love Willa Cather's books because she always devotes so much attention to the earth and nature. The Song of the Lark was a pleasant surprise since I've been a fan of Wagner's heroines for decades.

I would describe it as a series of vignettes that are linked by a common theme.

After I read My Antonia, which I thought was a brilliant book, I added more Willa Cather to my TBR. So, it is interesting to hear your thoughts on this. And you definitely need to read Graham Greene. I know some people don't like him, but he's one of my favourite writers. I even love Brighton Rock despite doing it at school. I'm working my way - slowly - through everything he's written. And if you read Brighton Rock you should watch the 50s film version too. With Richard Attenborough. It's brilliant.

I absolutely loved Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory. Talk about unique!! 🤩 Thank you for recommending the film version of Brighton Rock. Sometimes it's hard to know which adaptions are worth watching hahaha. My Antonia sounds sooo good!!

Never having travelled to the US and with no religious background, I missed first time round the central thesis of the book which is based around the question: what makes an American. I went back and read parts, particularly the prologue that takes place in a bishop's garden in opulent Spain. I rate this book highly for its insights on human nature and Cather's compassionate descriptions of the various people from diverse ethnic backgrounds living alongside each other. The history of the Catholic mission in New Mexico intertwined with myths and legends was skilfully done. I have watched all episodes of Breaking Bad twice as I loved the shots of the area around Albequerque, mentioned in Death Comes for the Archbishop and would love to visit that area one day.

Oh yes, good point about the theme of "What is an American?" I didn't think about it like that, but you're right. Thank you for the thoughtful comment. Sorry for the delay in response!

I would put it on reading lists for high school but today the a holes would protest that it has thoughts, themes and viewpoints and characters, and children should be protected from those. I love that it shows a novel need not follow the formula nearly all creative writing UA-cam clips advise: plot driven, cliff hanger driven and twists etc. It's as if Willa Cather chose to scrap that big city publishing format as inappropriate and ill suited to describe the lives of Eusebio and Father Joseph.. Each section however has its own mini-plot arcs.

Have you read Keys of the Kingdom? It reminds me a bit of this story. I like it as much if not more than DCftAb. I like Willa Cather's writing more than Cronin's but the story is so poignantly beautiful.
I like Willa Cather so much. I only own My Antonia. but I have read O, Pioneers! & the Song of the Lark also.

I have been listening to _My Antonia_ on my walks and I am really enjoying it. I don't know that _Death Comes for the Archbishop_ will be as successful or meaningful a book for me as it was for you.

    • @ChristyLuisDostoevskyinSpace
      @ChristyLuisDostoevskyinSpace  2 роки тому

The plot of My Antonia sounds a lot more engaging 😂😂 I can see why it might not be meaningful for every reader. It stands on it's own, though, as a very unique work. Thanks so much for coming by, Brian!! I hope you are having a great summer and staying cool!

@@ChristyLuisDostoevskyinSpace I am hoping to work my way through Cather's work on audio over the next several months and will definitely get to _Death Comes For the Archbishop_. _My Antonia_ is a good story so far, but with some pretty problematic depiction of immigrants and African Americans.
I always enjoy hearing you talk enthusiastically about the books you have been reading.
