30-06 with 165 grain Barnes TS. H414 powder. From deer to elk it just works! To many folks swap around with guns and change calibers and never really get settled in and learn there tool. Get behind one and get good with it is what I tell all the young hunters I’m around. Enjoying the shows as always.

@ I understand. You’re a great hunter and killed many an animal. The only thing I see with lots of folks is that the urge to “Change it Up” comes at the expense of lots of crippled game and that makes it hard on all of us, especially the critter on the other end of the mistake. Keep up the great content, it makes everyone learn.

    25-06 117 gr American whitetail

I love hornady America whitetail. Never had an issue and deer never go more than 30-40 yards, most drop in their tracks

Howdy Jeremy! Some years ago I shot a buck a few weeks after my buddy shot him but didn't find him. He definitely had a spot high on his back, spine area that wasn't to old and he was shot within 100yds from the first time he was shot.
So the following year on the same property I shot a real nice buck that drop and flopped and then got up and ran and I shot at him 2-3 more times. Couple hours go by and we start tracking him. I think we tracked him a half mile finding multiple spots of blood the size of cars hoods. Well we never found him dead or alive. The next year I shot another good 130s buck. Well once we were checking him out we found a bald patch high on his back that was scared up and we both felt like that was the buck I shot the year before.
I enjoy watching you and hearing stories and learning from you. Take care now!

Hi Jeremy now take this info for what it’s worth my dad and I have hand loaded for every single gun we own and in the 308 the best thing we have used is a 125 nosler ballistic tip now it may not be the best in the brush but when you are hunting fields or open woods there isn’t anything better in my opinion. My brother and brother in law have killed many deer with it and I’ve yet to see one make it more than 50 yards. If your interested in the load I can look up in the notes the powder and see what it is cause I can’t remeber off hand

I’ve been using the Barnes tipped tsx 150 grains in 7mm rem mag for a few years. They are a real tough bullet and your better off getting a shoulder shot if you can. I got these because that was all you could find during Covid. I have 85 hand loads left so I will use them up and make a decision later if I need to change.

U should try useing a 450 bushmaster if your shots are usually within that 250yd mark. I like a jacketed hollow point 250 grain. Prints about 3 inch groups at 200yds . The black butterfly 250 coppers are really devastating, but they dont group as well out of my gun, but if you're within a 150 yds, u won't be tracking.

l reload for my guns my 308 is a deer killer. I'll give you a freaking deer stopper, try 125 gr Nosler Accubonds with VARGET. start at 45 gr work up to max.. I'm close to a full charge pushing close to 2880 fps. my gun has a 18" barrel so I'm loosing some speed, if your barrel is 20-22 inches you will hit close to 3000 + fps. the regular NBT are deer droppers to but the Accubonds will leave 2 holes. 300 yards and in the don't move far. your search is over your welcome lol...

  • @JustMe-yg1ld

I have the 16” Christensen in 308, shooting a 155 ELDM at 2700 fps. At the lower velocities, the eldm performs well as a hunting bullet. Many DRTs, but when they run it isn’t far. I wouldn’t use this bullet at that muzzle velocity past 350 yards. In MS, I don’t have many sets that offer over 200 yd shots. I too high shoulder the bucks. The only time I ever used barnes was a lease that had immature pine thickets. Barnes delivers the best blood trails, but rarely drops the deer where they stand.

I have reloaded for many years and I’ve found Barnes TTSX and Nosler Accubonds have had the best terminal performance for me. I love lighter faster Barnes bullets in most of my rifles because of the hydrostatic shock it produces is unreal. However in my .308 I have found the 150 Accubond works better for me. I have had better terminal performance with this combination. I use Varget and IMR 4064 both at max loads with great success. Good luck sir.

    Jeremy,
I am a big fan of the Barnes bullets, in fact I have been on the Barnes "advisory staff" since the X-bullets first came out. I wrote the small introductory article for the 270 Winchester section in their 3rd edition reloading manual. As much as I love the bullets, be aware that they need speed to function well. Their literature states the bullets will expand down to 1800fps, and they will expand, but only to a very small diameter. For what I consider adequate expansion, set your impact velocity lower limit to 2400fps. Any slower and expansion will suffer. You will get a small mushroom and not have the dramatic quick kills that you get at closer ranges. You stated that you intended this rifle/load for 300yds or closer, I would set 300 as your absolute max, as you will be down to ~2200fps at that range. For your rifle next season, you may want to look at the 110gr, you can get them really fast, they kill like lightning, and have even lower recoil. You still have more penetration than you will ever need. I started my Son with the 110gr in his 308 as his first rifle. To date he as killed about 12 deer with this combo, and we have yet to recover a bullet. You will never recover one of these bullets on a broadside deer, their penetration is amazing. Be aware the lighter bullets start off faster, but they also bleed off velocity faster due to poor BC. It's all a trade-off, but for close to medium range they work great. I suggest you look up your load on JBM Ballistics and you can make some pretty accurate drop charts and see what your velocity is at different ranges. I hunt not too far from you on the Homochitto River. I killed a nice 8 point on the 3rd try years ago. First time he came out onto the sandbar at grey light, had a weak-side shot at about 150 yards and I cut 2 or 3 white hairs but did not hit meat. Second time he ran across the sandbar after a doe, clean miss on a running shot. Third time he trotted out onto the sandbar at about 50 yards, spined him with the first shot and had to put a finisher just like you did in this video. Once he was down, could see the spot on his brisket where the shot on the first encounter had cut some hairs. This was years ago. Today I would have passed those shots, I'm not as "mad" at the deer as I was when I was younger. These Mississippi deer have a hard life. The action on our place should start January 1, wish me luck this year !

I was having issues with bullets coming apart and not exiting. With the handloads I have recovered 16 of 17 shot deer and have recovered 2 bullets. All others exited clean. Longest I've shot this round is 200yds and it got same results. I think I have only had 3 or 4 get out of sight to have to track. None have went over 100yds. Faster isn't always better.

I shot a doe with a bow one week to the day out of the same tree after my uncle gave her a shave across the top of her back. She blew the whole time until I ventilated her lungs. He big mistake was walking behind a very large water oak! Game over!!!
    Merry Christmas

Shot a buck a few years back with a slug. Tracked blood and never found him. Week later he was on camera with a wound that was high. Deer are tough!!

I’m big fan of Barnes 130 ttsx in 308. I don’t know what powder you’re using but Ramshot TAC works well in several 308s with 130 ttsx. TAC will also get you the best velocity. I hunt in Chickasaw county which is very close to you
