Thank you. Finally I understand the turn buckle 🥳. I’ve been researching trellises for a couple of days and you are the first person to explain this clearly. 🥰
Loved this cost effective DIY solution. Most videos on UA-cam shows extensive construction of trellis which needs a lot of materials, time, effort and money. I didn't want to spend a fortune just to get my creepers up a wall. Your solution is not only elegant but also inexpensive. Thanks a lot.
This is the most helpful Tutorial I have ever enjoyed.I gleaned so much comprehensive instruction and information on pruning and supporting climbing roses. Thank you Annette.
What an excellent tutorial, which was clearly demonstrated and explained. Armed with the knowledge you have kindly imparted, I shall now go and install some vine eyes and lines to support a climbing rose on the side of my house.
Thank you for your really clear and helpful explanation of how to install a wire trellis. I've got concrete fence posts so will be using special wire anchors with holes to thread the galvanised wire through. My longest length of fencing is 12 meters (the other lengths are 11m and 9m). Please could you advise how many turnbuckles I'd need for one length of wire? I don't want to overload it.
You are welcome Jan. You really only need 1 turnbuckle for each length of wire. You could make a wire trellis without them but then you wouldn't be able to tighten the wires over the years. But that's all they are used for - they don'e add an additional strength or anything like that. 😊
Nice video. As a suggestion, I'd have just made 2 holes at the top and 2 at the bottom to put in a trellis to train it on, less holes, easy solution that looks great as well. :)
This was so clear, thanks! I have just planted three clematis, spread across 4 fence panels. Would one wire lenght be OK across all four panles? Or would you do 2 and 2? If so, could they go in the same vine eye in the centre? Thanks!!
My garden centre recommended rope wire for strength is this what you have used please? Our fence doesn't have the posts just the panels is this ok please
Hi, no, we didn't;t use rope wire - it's not necessary for the roses but it does depend on what you're going to grow on your trellis. We used this 1.8mm wire : amzn.to/3VBY030
Hi there, We use garden twine, like a very thin sisal string. It's important to tie things in using a figure of eight pattern so that they don't rub against the support. This video has detailed instructions towards the end ua-cam.com/video/ma7j1c16CZ0/v-deo.htmlsi=EW5nzMEIgTh61xcX and there is a link to the jute twine we use in the description below the video.
Hi, this is so helpful thank you. I have a huge wall (10x5m) and I would like to have star jasmines go wild on it! Do you have vertical lines as well as horizontal? How wide should I space it? How wide would you need a spacer vine eye to be (every couple of meters?). Thank you so much for this! Thinking I need 3mm wire, turnbuckles both ends because of the length. Any help would be so appreciated!
Hi Lewis, That's a big wall! You only need 1 turnbuckle on each wire. I've never installed vertical wires. And I think we usually have a vine eye every 2 meters or so. Good luck!
Hello, thank you for your help. I’m wondering if you can help. Do I need a turnbuckle on both ends? I’ll be using this installation indoors and hanging posters on it. The stance is about 9 meters.
Hi, no there's no need - the turnbuckle is just there so that you can tighten the wire because it loosens over time. It's best to check it every year and just twist the turnbuckle until it's taut again.
Hi Linda, No, you don't need vertical wire too, unless you feel that it will benefit your climbers but most climbers will naturally grow upwards, towards more light. It won't hurt them to have it but we never have. Hope this helps. Annette
Hi, great video! I plan to do a wire trellis on a timber fence similar to yours. How far apart vertically are the wires? 20-30cm? I'm looking to grow star jasmine. Any recommendation on size of turnbuckles and vine eyes? Thanks again.
Hi Rosie, yes. I'd say that they cables are about 30cm apart, maybe 40cm. I've listed all the products I used in the description of this video - take a look at the links for sizes etc. Good luck with your trellis.
Hi Florencia, I have linked all the products we used in the description below the video - do take a look there where you will find all the information you need. Thanks for watching. 😁
Hi there, I think you can definitely use this method but I would probably choose a thicker/stronger gauge wire because the grapes themselves will be heavy. 👍🏼
Thanks for the video, really helpful. Please can you tell me what size/length vine eye you would need for supporting a climbing rose on a house wall? I'd want enough space behind the wire for air circulation. Thanks 😊
Hi Valerie, So glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. These are the vine eyes we used for our roses that are on our house wall and they seem to be perfect. Hope this helps. Thanks, Annette amzn.to/3qrfXBq
Is there a reason you didn't install turnbuckles on the wall? Our front door jettisons out from the house, supported by two pillars either side. I want to grow a rose (Generous Gardener) up each but need to install wire supports. This is the closest information I've found about putting wire supports on a small section of wall on the internet. Thanks.
Hi Josh, Thank you so much - I'm glad we could help. The reason we didn't use turnbuckles on the wall, is because it's just a brick pillar and so we felt it was too short a length of wire to benefit from the turnbuckles (less than 1 meter). Also, we weren't planning to grow anything heavy in this area - predominantly a Type 3 clematis, which needs to be chopped back each year. In retrospect, we may well regret the decision and decide that we need to retro-fit some turnbuckles 😬😃. Good luck with your project.
Hi, yes, this is what we used for the 3 David Austin James Galway roses on the front of our house, you can find videos about them (to see what they look like) on my channel. I'm not sure about a rambler - maybe just use higher gauge wire for them because they are so huge.
Great video Annette thank you. I've just put up a wooden trellis but i'm not sure its up to the job for my Star Jasmine....do you think the wire trellis would work better in terms of holding the weight of the Star Jasmine once its established? Its on a wall and would cover about 3.5m wide by 1m high.
Hi there, I think the difficulty with the wooden trellis is that it will deteriorate over time but the wire ones should last a lot longer. The Star jasmine sounds like it will get very big so it would be a shame to have to move it to repair the trellis - I would definitely go with a wire one but it's really up to you and how much effort you're willing to go to to maintain the wooden one. Glad you found the video useful. Thank you for watching 🌿😄🌱
@@cottoverdi thank you for your reply Annette, wooden trellis taken down and drilling has commenced! I've gone for 2.5mm wire just incase. Thanks for giving me the know how and confidence to install the wire trelliss 😀
Hi Ruby, we didn't;t use the turnbuckle on this particular wall because it was just a pillar and so it was very short and the turnbuckle would've been pointless. On longer walls, we definitely use turnbuckles on every single length. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Annette 😁
Thank you. Finally I understand the turn buckle 🥳. I’ve been researching trellises for a couple of days and you are the first person to explain this clearly. 🥰
Oh I'm so glad we could help, Brittany. 😁🌿🌸
Same!! Thank you
AGREED! I watched this video first, then several more, and I'm following your direction. Can't wait to get started.
Agreed! This is the best video I’ve found!
So wonderful to find a good English vlog, nearly all I've found on You Tube are in USA.

Thanks for the tips, really helpful and inspiring.😊
Glad it was helpful Robin.
David Austin sells 2 mm galvanised wire ,so I went to B&Q and bought 2mm x 100 m . Thanks for the tips ❤
That is awesome!
Verry hulpfull! Thank you ma’am. All the best from the Netherlands 👋🏽
You’re welcome 😊 I'm so glad it was helpful.
Thanks so much. Really helpful video.😊
You're so welcome! 😊
Thanks for this, about to do this for some Espalier trees, so very helpful!
You are so welcome!
Didn’t think about using turnbuckles. Great idea! I just bought some for the one side. I got 2mm wire. Now I need to install these. Cheers.
This was a really helpful video, my climbing rose blew over last night so I need a more secure way to support it. Thanks for the advice.
I'm so glad you found it helpful. Good luck with your new trellis.
Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
Tremendous video, very much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!😁
Just what I needed. Thank you.

It's a very satisfying job!

Gosh, without know the measurements, it's hard to advise. We used one wire all the way along but used a vine eye on each fence post.
Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
Can you drill the holes into mortar instead of the brick?
Yes, you can drill anywhere that suits your design. 😁

Hi, yes, I will be posting a video in a few days to show how it looks this year - it is in full flower right now. 😁🌸🌱
Turnbuckle at only one end yes?
Yes, only one end.
Thanks so much, this is very helpful. Do you find you need the vertical wire too for plants to grow up or is horizontal ok?

Can this just be done between fence posts without the fence panelling behind it?
Hi Penelope, yes, you can definitely just use fence posts - as long as they are sturdy enough to take the tensioned wire. Hope this helps. Annette
