They originally stopped it because the producers thought he would be scary to kids if he still used his powers. I head cannoned that in lore he found it annoying to count and accidentally hypnotizing people or perhaps saw a therapist about his anger issues whenever people interrupted his counting. I do love that they make him use his power by counting. Although it was hard for me to hear, he does count all the way to 10(although I miss his "Ah-ah-ah!" from the show). Originally I thought he counted to 5, skipped 6, and continued from there, provoking Mr. Johnson to count with him and adding the 6, thus successfully hypnotizing him.

It was pretty obvious from the start Grover was gonna get corrupted, I mean, the songs name is literally “Idiotic Heroism” with the addition of Count, Grover really stood no chance, but it’s funny, he was corrupted, not DEAD, I expect to see Grover get revived at some point, until then, it’s up to Mr. Johnson…(yeah Sesame Street is doomed.)
