If China agrees to reschedule Pakistan’s debts, other countries that are part of China’s Belt and Road initiative will demand the same from China. This will triple China’s economy.
If China does not agree to reschedule Pakistan’s debts, it will bankrupt Pakistan and Pakistan will face sovereign default which will ruin Pakistan totally. It will make Pakistan China’s worst enemy too. Everyone in Pakistan will express their hate for China openly without any hesitation. Pakistan’s economy will also collapse.
Even if China agrees to reschedule Pakistan’s debts, it will do so only by increasing interest rates very steeply and imposing stringent conditions as well as demanding collateral on unreasonable terms. Pakistan is not earning enough now even to pay interest due on its foreign loans. So, repayment of even a tiny part of principal in the near future is out of question. Increased interest payments will accelerate Pakistan’s economic collapse even further.
USA should push China to reschedule Pakistan’s debts and also encourage Pakistan to make such demands strongly. This will be in the interests of USA and also India.
