  • In this video I do an autofocus comparison between the Sony 200-600mm G lens and the Sony 100-400mm GM lens.
👉Discover our new community forum: www.alphashoot...
I used the Sony a6400, a7III, a7R III and a9. Each lens is tested at 400mm, then I add the 1.4x teleconverter to take the 100-400 to 560mm and compare it with the 200-600 at 600mm, all shot wide-open.
You can find detailed image comparisons between these two lenses on my website here:

Crop in the A9 to equal the A7rIII and then compare. I have both and grab the A7rIII and now A7rIV long before the a9. When the A9 3 or 4 or 5 offers a larger file then it might be my first choice. I am a bird photographer shooting birds in flight with the Sony 600mm F4 and A7rIV and the a9 can't compare in feather detail. I just wish the A7riV had a faster frame rate as 20 fps offers a better chance of getting the exact composition I want.

As you mentioned you'll upload a video of shooting birds with these lenses, please take a APS-C (like a6400) camera also along with any full frame camera. Because many people like shooting birds with APS-C because of the extra reach in focal length.

    • @AlphaShooters

I wanted to use identical tracking and focus areas on all 4 cameras, so I used a wide focus area since only the a6400 and a9 support real-time tracking and there's no animal eye af on the a9 just yet. Also animal eye af doesn't work all that well for fast head on shots with lots of movement, at least it doesn't on Frank.

Nice test I've sub'd looking forward to your BIF test. I'm sold on the 200-600mm although it's not as good as my Canon 300mmf2.8LIS I just want an affordable BIF lens to go with a great cam the A9 possibly MC11 with my Canon lens would be good enough. Recently I'm having two minds about this due to the A7r4 may be a better option (rumour says it has A9 focus) not enough tests out there yet.

Thank you Necip. Love your shots of the kites too, definitely one of my favourite birds to shoot. Where do you shoot them? I like Bwlch Nant Yr Arian. I don't think the a7R IV focus will come close to the a9, you'll also still get blackouts when shooting continuous. The a9 is definitely the better camera for birds in flight but I prefer to use my a7R III for shooting pretty much everything else. I hope to rent an a7R IV soon and do a similar AF comparison with the a7R III and a9.

Thank you! The a9 is pretty awesome. If I could afford to keep both I would. The 100-400 is the better lens if you travel a lot and need to pack small and light. It's also much better for shooting bugs due to it's short minimum focussing distance of around 1m. The 200-600 is the better lens if you are shooting at 600mm more often and don't mind the extra weight and size along with the pretty poor MFD of around 3m. It's much sharper at 600mm than the 100-400 + 1.4x at 560mm. Adding the 1.4x to the 200-600 also gives you some serious reach. The very short throw of the internal zoom on the 200-600 also makes zooming in and out quickly a breeze and it balances much better on a gimbal. - Tim

The 2x works well on the 70-200 but it’s not as sharp nor the AF as fast as the 100-400 at 400mm. If you shoot more at 400mm I’d go with the 100-400. But if you are mainly shooting 70-200 with a few shots at 400mm now and again then the 2x is a good option.

I found that a6400 with 100 400 gm (600 mm equivalent to full frame) give me much better IQ than a7III with 200 600, and 100 400 with a6400 or A7III is much faster to lock in target in focus, especially in low light situations. I do view photos in a 37 inch 4k monitor. I am not sure that make difference. I read everywhere that 200 600 just as sharp if not sharper than 100 400. But not in my case, maybe I got a bad copy of 200 600.

The 100-400 does have a slight advantage in low light. My 200-600 is slightly sharper than my 100-400 at f/5.6 but at f/6.3 there is no difference. There will definitely be some copy variation unfortunately :(

I rented the 200-600 with an a6400 and got very good results photographing birds in flight. The ergonomics and handling of the a6400 is not that great unfortunately which is the main reason why I moved from Sony APSC to Full frame 3 years ago. I have an A7R2 but the buffer and focusing is not that great which is the main reason I rented the a6400 when I rented the lens. I just picked up the 100-400 and 1.4 TC used and sort of having some regrets about not getting the 200-600. Main reason I got the 100-400 was physical size. The image quality from the 100-400 is great but I find the handling of the zoom ring awkward as compared to the 200-600. The internal zooming is nice.
My question is, what body do I get since I have an A7R2 to take advantage of the buffer and focusing issues I have? I’m considering the a6400 just for value. Plus it gives me the extra reach. In hindsight I would like to get an A7R3 but it would still cost about 1200 to trade up from the 2 to the 3. Any thoughts?

Thanks for commenting Pete. Apart from the weight I prefer using the 200-600 as well, the internal zoom and short throw makes it so much easier for tracking subjects. I'd like to keep both but will probably have to sell my 100-400 soon.

@@AlphaShooters. I initially considered keeping my 100 - 400mm but had two issues: I use a Cotton Carrier G3 twin system with my A9 + 200 - 600mm on the chest holster and my A7III + 90mm macro on the hip holster. This works well; but the 100 - 400mm is too long and bulky for the hip holster when carrying the 200 - 600mm. I was also unable to work out a scenario in which I would use the 100 - 400mm in preference to my 200 - 600mm. So it had to go.

    Mightily impressive!
You could argue the statistics strictly mathematically which is correct, but still you could see the A9 had no problems what so ever despite throwing any of the lenses at it, so clearly the difference makes less of an issue with the right tool, the lens is inconsequential.

I used a gimbal to make it a little easier. I've already tried with BIF but when shooting handheld it's too difficult to keep track of the birds using the Ninja V because of the extra weight and slight screen delay, I'll be trying with a gimbal next time so can hopefully get some video, otherwise I'll just have to disable the info display so I can use the EVF.

@@AlphaShooters I have 100-400 GM too and by recording video on tripod stabilization turns off automatically.

@@viktorskalican1980 Quite strange. I've only checked it on my a7III but in movie mode and shooting video whilst on a tripod the OSS remains enabled unless I turn it off. Which camera are you using?

@@viktorskalican1980 I think this is the default behaviour. It only kicks in when it detects movement. On mine I wouldn't say that the movement needs to be very strong before it kicks in, it works with the slightest movement even on my tripod. When I get a second I'll compare it to the 200-600 to see if there is any difference here. - Tim
