"You can throw down huh" is what Marcus said to Carmy at the end of the first episode in season 1, he says the same to Marcus after he shows off his dessert menu.
Carmy is already bad at prioritizing tasks. Sugar and Pete have been together for 5+ years (Fishes episode), are married, and are currently expecting a kid. Carmy & Claire JUST started dating. In a new relationship, you have to tend to it constantly. In an established relationship you're more comfortable with spending some time apart. It sucks that they were doomed bc of bad timing.
and i think this is carmy's first proper relationship, no? Whenever he talks about his job and private life, it is like the latter didn't exist. so he literally is like a teenager who's too in love to focus on school.
When Maple said "Why can't he do both like a normal person"; he's not a normal person. The reason he became the best chef in the world at the best restaurant is because he is psychotic. He is insane because everything he did was to become the best. Claire distracts him from that. That is why it is such a struggle for him because he left home and literally just focused on getting better. Claire doesn't let him do that. And if you notice his panic attack in the beginning of the episode, the only thing that calmed him down was the thought of Syd....
Also Carmy is very avoidant, he runs away from uncomfortable and difficult situations. It's why he became estranged from his family to work in haute cuisine, and it's why when Cicero confronts him with having to choose between Claire and The Bear, he doesn't really choose. Maybe if Cicero had never told him he had to choose, he would've shut Claire down to focus on the restaurant, but he did so instead of running from Claire, Carmy ran from the choice itself.
It's the restaurant keeping him from being happy. This relationship would be the first of many disappointments if he doesn't fix himself. I hope he can fix things with Claire, that would show he's grown enough to balance his work and personal life. Despite the rocky start, Claire WAS good for him. His monologue while stuck in the freezer explained the toxic mindset he's had pretty well: that his misery is what makes him good. That's just not true. And even if it is, is it even worth it to trade your happiness for a successful but bleak existence.
I think Carmy assumed Syd's mom was alive because she'd said in a previous episode that her plans that night were a bithday dinner for her mom, but she never clarified it was just her and her dad celebrating.😊
Like the comments at 13:54 kinda got me because they were so unfair. "I don't know why you can't do both like a normal effing person." Didn't you watch episode 6? Carmy is severely traumatized and lacking in any dating department. He has always been geared towards 1 thing, cooking. Just to gain the acknowledgement of Michael. He means well but doesn't know how to do it and fails constantly.

The Alex Gonzalez analogy aka the Steve Bartman game of the 2003 NLCS to the opening of the restaurant was interesting. Particular relevant to North Siders and/or Cubs fans everywhere. What people lose sight of is that it came in Game 6. The Cubs still had the opportunity to win the series in Game 7 the following evening once again at Wrigley Field, which they did not do. But they finally did win a World Series 13 years later against the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians). The Guardians have now supplanted the Cubs as the team, who has gone the longest time without a championship (1948).
what’s weird is how some people see the Marcus/Syd dynamic as only platonic but not Carm/Syd? 💀 why is it okay for Syd and Marcus to only be friends and not Syd’s BUSINESS partner lmao.
Because she turned down his advance, meaning she clearly just sees him as a friend. That's not enough? On the other hand, they both just expressed to each other how much they make the other better. I guarantee you no one here can tell their gf or bf that they were having this moment with a co-worker under the table telling him/her how they couldn't move forward without each other. I like Richie and Sydney way more than Carmy and Sydney as a romantic couple. I think having them as business partners makes a romance messy and a legit red flag.
well Richie is part of that Business so that would be messy too specially Richie yes he's better now but he still Richie with his struggle kid his ex wife that he still love ..
Not saying her and Carmy need to be together, but the phrase “mom and pop shop” exists for a reason. Plenty of couples run businesses together. Richie is probably old enough to be her dad. Imagine Sydney as his kid’s stepmother.
Read some statistics, most relationships develop at work. It's where you spend most of your time and are likely to meet ppl who share similar interests.
