This was one of those rare movies that Showcase played at 2 AM in the early 1980's when you bent the cable around the right way to unscramble the image.
Upon seeing an initial screening, Ron Liebman asked that his name be removed from the credits. After this bombed in theatres, MAD publisher Bill Gaines paid to have all references to the magazine removed the home video release.
I was a kid with a Mad Magazine subscription when this came out... Actually paid money from my allowance to go see this. I remember leaving the theater and thinking this movie wasn't very good, and "What did Mad Magazine or Alfred E Neuman have to do with anything I just saw?" Never bothered to watch it again, even when for free on TV.
I’m a huge Mad fan and felt so subversive whenever I got hold of a copy. Also a lover of 80s movies. Thus I am shocked that I’m now well into middle age and am only first hearing this movie exists. I can only assume it’s so terrible that Mad went out of its way to bury it from public knowledge.
Ralph Macchio, from G rated Karate Kid (more or less) in an early performance that proves even Daniel-san was dirty enough to, ahem, wax on and wax off???😉
What would have made this movie funny and would have given an Oscar if it was called National Lampoon presents up the academy It's a combination for what I've seen the trailer of mash and Animal House
This was definitely one of those rent the VHS 📼 on $2.00 movie night and smoke a little bud to truly like it type of movies. I'll just leave it at that 😏
One of my favourite movies. We rented this on VHS back in the day and I got my own copy soon after and played it to death. Even though the editing and most of the acting is really bad (Ralph Macchio saves the movie), but the soundtrack is awesome. That's the first time I heard Iggy Pop's Night Theme (Reprise) and got Kill City soon after. The first time I heard The Baby's Midnight Rendevous was in the movie and I love that song now. Not mentioning all the behind the scenes nonsense and threats of lawsuits, then everyone subsequently wanting nothing to do with the movie (including Ron "SAY IT AGAIN" Leibman and even Mad Magazine themselves). I hate the term "Cult Classic" but.... it is to me.
I am absolutely, positively, head over heels in love with Ron Leibman (I'm no longer embarrassed to admit it) so he's the only reason I want to see this schlock. But how in the hell did he go from Norma Rae to this?
Many great movies that year, Friday the 13th. Caddyshack, private Benjamin, and my favorite " Airplane " . I saw everyone we mentioned at the theater when they came out ! I was 18 in 1980. I saw Jaws in the theater 50 years ago , up in Smoke , the Jerk, Barbarella, Grizzly Adams and even 'Valdez is Coming.
Hypothetically speaking, what do you think if we got a better movie from Mad Magazine? How about an 2D animated film where Alfred E. Neuman goes on some sort of crazy, insane and mischievous adventure? Something that even Pee Wee's Big Adventure has nothing on.
Mad Magazine publicly disowned it, and Ron Leibman wouldn't allow his name to appear in the credits. I don't blame them. This one stunk like dead fish!
My dad was in this movie, he played Chester the gas station attendant and actually drove the truck during the chase scene.

The very FIRST movie Ralph Macchio was ever in
No lie this movie had my stomach hurting in 86 when I fist saw it. Hilarious!
How did I get through my 80’s childhood without even hearing of this movie?
yeah, HOW???
Trust me I like 80s cheese as much as the next shoulder padded farah wearing afro mop head, but this really stinks.
Closed almost as fast as it opened
Well, Mad Magazine disowned it and tried to bury it, to give you an idea.
I said the same thing. I loved mad magazine
Ron Leibman's 'southern' accent....😂 What a riot. You can clearly hear the Manhattan in his voice.
one of my ALL-TIME favs, can't tell you how many times i've seen it..........................SAY IT AGAIN!!!1
What a great movie reminds me of my little brother jamie rip little brother 🙏
Shot entirely in Salina, KS at the Saint John's Military School
I went there lol

So what? This film was awesome
they had no idea what a timeless classic it is!
back in the day, it took me forever to find this soundtrack.
Finally, I "LUCKED OUT LIKE A TURN IN A PUNCHBOWL."
Turd in a punchbowl!
This is the most hilarious movie I ever saw, no exaggeration.
I can just hear Ron Leibman shouting "Say it again!" with a southern accent combined with his regular Manhattan accent.
THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER
SAY IT AGAIN!!!1
I wonder how many people approached Leibman and said that. I doubt he would have enjoyed it.
This movie was made in my hometown !
Coooool mine to.
Where?
I don't care what they say this movie was great!!! Good soundtrack too
Great soundtrack and very funny for sure!
Remember watching this with my older cousin when I was about 11 y.o. Thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

This should have been a National Lampoon movie that Doug Kenney would have been proud enough to enjoy directing

If Harvey Kurtzman and/or William Gaines have NOTHING to do with it, it ain’t “Mad” (The same goes for “MAD TV” as well).
Mad's Answer to National Lampoon's Animal House. It and Released the same year as The Blues Brothers.
