Panama is more than just the Panama Canal. It's a pretty unique country.
I’ve been to Panama, it’s honestly a beautiful country with a mix of history, jungle, and beaches. Would highly recommend.
@Spicyleaves what do you mean Panama is a beautiful country with great beaches and pretty rainforest I could say if it wasn’t for the Panama Canal, Panama would probably be known for their jungle and beautiful beaches
@Depresso Caspico Panama was never a US colony. The Canal Zone was an territory of the US leased by the US from Panama for which they paid a yearly rent.
@Depresso Caspico you're the kind of person that when people ask them about basic geography stuff the always think that Europe and Africa are countries instead of continents haha
Indeed, Colón started to decline after the Canal Zone was abolished, they heavily depended on the services the city provided to US bases. Fun fact, most of the country’s infraestructure is located on the pacific side, while the Caribbean side is much less populated and developed (partly due to geographic reasons, since the cordillera and the rainforest makes roads very costly to build for scarcely populated villages, also there are many protected areas on that side, and indigenous jurisdictions were the central government doesn’t interfere much for complicated reasons). Cheers
@Depresso Caspico No, I just made a clarification on why Colon is what it is today.
I went to Panama recently, I highly recommend snorkeling in Portobelo, it’s absolutely amazing the massive variety of fish and coral you see even in a small zone, just make sure to wear sunscreen. Panama is beautiful, people are lovely and the food is great I can’t wait until I can go back!

The most extraordinary fact about Panamanian geography and even world geography is that the Pacific Ocean entrance to the canal is EAST of the Atlantic Ocean entrance.
Balboa crossed the isthmus in 1513, not 1503*.
Hello! Just some points, The Canal was finally returned to us on December 31st, 1999 and we are Central America, not North America, having that said (I saw some comments), no, the Canal doesn't divide our country in North and South America🤣
It varies country to country in alot of places but Central America often is considered part of the continent of North America so he isnt technically wrong (As i said, it depends on the education of the country you live).

We didn't get money during our secession from Colombia.
Also 7:19 the Panamanian government itself blocks the plans for extending the Pan-American highway (caveat: there's a lot of people who favour finishing the highway). In addition to the reasons you listed, the Darien gap serves as a buffer zone with Colombian internecine conflicts, of which we've never wanted a part of (see our numerous secessions over Colombia's constant civil wars prior to the Thousand Days War).

I lived in Panama from 1984 to 1989..in the Punta Pitllia section of Panama City..and my wife is Panamanian...so I know a bit about this country...First of all..NEVER go to Colon...you will either be robbed...or murdered...Second, Avenida Central is the place to go for great shopping and street food..and third...you must go to the "Interior" AKA the countryside...full of beaches, mountains, and friendly people...It is a great country to visit...or even to live...
As of now, yeah Colon is quite literally becoming like Chicago or Atlanta were drug/gang related violence are happening every day. I believe that, including yesterday, there has been one murder per day since Sept 12 or something like that. Ave Central has changed a lot, for better and worse and is no longer the place to buy and such. The countryside is the same beautiful as ever, although Cocle, Veraguas and Chiriqui are having a lot of infrastructure builded around and more people are moving to different provinces instead of just going to the city.

One of the many problems no one addresses is the Panamanian currency. Although Panama has its own currency (the Balboa), however, Panama also uses the U.S. dollar. The Balboa to U.S. dollar exchange rate is 1-to-1, which doesn't make since when it comes to GDP. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Panama was worth 52.94 billion US dollars in 2020. Compare that to the U.S. GDP in 2020 at $20.93 trillion. So how did the 1-to-1 exchange rate balance off? Someone with subject matter expertise in economy explain this...I am not convinced that Panama is the best or most beneficial place to retire. Healthcare and medical services outside of Panama City is horrible. DO NOT expect hospitals outside of Panama City to have the same quality. Start asking what expats do not like about Panama...

All of Panama is in the Central American part of North America, why are you inplicating that part of it is in South America?

So Panama is also just a city state with control over its hinterlands and smaller communities. I know Thailand is similar but how many nations are really just city states.

Would you guys think that usa could take over the canal again if the war in ucrania gets kinda messy? Like it would be a pretty great asset to send their aid chips to the war zone. They actually agreed to give us the canal, but the agreement includes certain conditions that are very relative. I guess we couldnt do that much to keep that from happening since we dont have any national defense
I was thinking the same think, i mean, the Canal is a Brigde between South and North America, we might be a Target if this war stuff gets worse :/
Part of the agreements include that in case of conflict Panama must grant exclusive access to the United States forces through the canal and block it against their enemies. There’s no need for an invasion when the already are the force that protects us.

The Panama Canal Railway will soon be owned by a Canadian company.
3:43 an important thing to add is that the Panama Canal treaty in the 1970s was a result of diplomatic genius by Panama and its allies. As a Panamanian, please let me elaborate.
Panama saw the signs of the time: The US, "the leader of the free world," championed liberty and was calling on the Soviet Union to not oppress countries around the world and allow for self-determination, so Panama used this argument effectively on its behalf against the US.
The Panama Canal and its sovereignty was not only about revenue, but an argument for liberty, sovereignty, and self-determination that its previous owner itself, the US, could not ignore and needed to uphold.
Like America cared about that at all. Where they not, at that time, overthrowing governments all over Latam, Africa and Asia, and putting bloody dictators in power?

Is funny that Colombia tried to poke the eye of the biggest rich kid on the schoolyard and not expecting to be bulldozed by the same kid.
Colombia was in the middle of a civil war and there were already American soldiers “protecting” the Panama Canal and because of how difficult, it was to transport troops through the jungle, the Americans knew it would be easier to just have it as a puppet state because it’s not only a tax haven but also uses dollars now.
They just took advantage of Colombia

The real reason why Darien Gap doesn't have a road going through it is not mainly because of treacherous terrain, mikitary and druglords hide n seeking, but simply because there's no economic incentive and sense to do so.
Roads have been made on some of the most difficult terrain BUT it made economic sense to make one in the first place.
Agreed. If the US desired an open highway for trade and people from North to South it would exist. But they definitely don’t want an open highway from South to North for the drug trade, or people.
