  • Once again an enormous THANK YOU to pearlmuth3, who generously sent this recording to me and requested the upload. Until now this recording has never been posted anywhere on the Internet. This is a continuation of the former clip.
The end of Act 3, Lucia di Lammermoor, sung by Richard Tucker. Live 1961 with Joan Sutherland as Lucia.
Includes the aria 'tu che a Dio spiegasti l'ali'.
Note: 'Though his numerous recordings clearly reveal a great voice, they do not reproduce the visceral impact his voice had when heard live in the house. He was the opposite of his contemporary Jussi Björling. Björling sounds better on records than he did in performance -- his voice was not as big as seems on his recordings. Tucker was best experienced in person.' - grandi-tenori.com

Have performance of Dec. 9, 1961 with Tucker and Sutherland on reel to reel only missing a small portion of performance when I had to turn over reel to finish recording!

An old friend of mine, a restraunteur in Verona says his dad and his dad's opera cronies who all heard Muzio, Scacciati, Caniglia, Gigli, Lauri Volpi, Pertile etc. live always talked about the GIOCONDA of Maria Callas, in the late 40's, not so much because of Callas (forgive the blasphemy) but because of "Reecharda Toooker," as he prounounced it, who he said completely stole the show and sent the audience (remember, the Italians didn't know Tucker at this point in time) into a frenzy. According to him and his buddies, Tucker actually had the most success that evening.

I believe it 100% He was best heard in house and the power, beauty and tone that way was best appreciated as it was a big voice and wide, best hard in house as I heard him many many times. Rip. (the Rec. quality here is not great, but you get the idea of the impact he had Live)

Even though this really isn't his fach Tucker still sings one of the most beautiful renditions of this finale I've ever heard. He truly feels the character. And to anyone who says he didn't have a beautiful voice, or legato: listen carefully.

Fach is less important than the role being sung well, don't you think? Why does the role have to be done by a lighter voiced singer?

@@MightyTenor It doesn't, both Bergonzi and late Corelli sang it a couple of times with Peters in the Early 1970's, this from a Tucker live Met. complete brdcst is my 1961 recording of it, I sent it long ago to (Theo) "German opera singer" for him to post it--I posted at the time under "Pearlmuth 3"sorry for the weak poor sound, anyhow several Spinto's sang it besides Tucker and Bergonzi--- and they both recorded it on studio LP's complete, Tucker in 1954 with Pons and Bergonzi with Sills in 1971, also Cioni and a young Sutherland recorded it . Domingo sang it also, and long ago Caruso I think did.

I really feel like Richard Tucker was the Maria Callas of tenors. Tucker really lived in these characters and you can hear it! Every other tenor of the day just stood there, wrapped their chords in cotton, and sang pretty. Richard Tucker really let loose, yelled, took risks, really made a character.

This is a role that is usually suited for a lyric tenor, However Tucker triumphs here as he usually did in every role. Very beautiful!

@@sugarbist Yes, even with the poor quality here of the sound, he sings it in the proper key and at age 48 in 1961 was in prime voice, he sang with white hot passion and a beautiful powerful voice both . RIP--- Richard Tucker, (1913--1975)

Great even in the poor sound quality here, and I saw him singing this opera also this very year in 1961 with Joan S. but in Chicago not NY. and again in 1970 there in Chicago again, in six performances of it I attended, he did it then with soprano Christina Deutekom , he was great every night out.

@@shicoff1398 He said himself, when asked by friends how he could do it... it was his joy to sing. No surprise every night delivers.
I love so many great voices on this opera, GDS for example, but Tucker added another layer of rich depth in artistry, I am touched by this, something not easily describe in my poor vocabulary...
Joan S is so well known for this mad scene, but her voice inlay is not my favorite,
Still outstanding era, though not as dense as 1950's...

One of the most beautiful moments for a tenor in any opera. Tucker and Kraus are always the moments I remember at this point- Kraus was never visceral, but he managed to catch the incredible melancholy of Edgardo, and Tucker was a sheer force of nature.

Yes, this IS the 12/9/1962 performance, because that IS unmistakably Nicola Moscona, in his last Met appearance as well as his last Met broadcast, as Raimondo. You are right: Tucker is mesmerizing and passionate and IN CHARACTER with some of the best singing I have ever heard!!!! Thank you VERY much for posting this - a reminder that Caruso's arrival at the Met spelled the end of "Lucia, ending with the Mad Scene." Too bad no Wolf's Crag scene with Tucker and Guarrera.....

I went to the piano to find out,I thought he "covered" high, but I think if the old version has not changed that he sings a SEMITONE LOWER than written.(Many tenors do) DID HE?? Good feeling,or should I say expression or what??I do the aria on youtube, not lowered. Also Di quella pira in C,live. Not quite the same color as he has though, still growing I hope....Kári.
