In the early 20s, Disney made a film called "Alice's Wonderland", which is about a young girl who visits Disney studios and finds out that all their animations are alive and interact with the animators. And then she goes into a cartoon, where a parade is thrown for her, until a bunch of lions show up and chase her off a cliff.
Yeah, Disney were doing way better stuff in the 20s than Kings Quest VII.
Actually, Animation Magic, the studio behind the CD-i Zelda games, apparently DID do some animation work for this.

Just so you now, the company Animation magics (graphic creator for such wonderful titles as wand of Gamalon and I.M. Mean) last project was Warcraft Adventures, which was cancelled. It is slightly terrifying to know that even worse animation was being produced then theirs.

By the looks of it, yes they did. must have been close to when the company was dissolved, judging by the exceptionally horrid quality.

My sister had this game when I was little but she threw it out. All I remembered was the cover of the disk and never knew what it was called. Now that you're playing this I finally found out what that game was. Just by looking at this I know the reason why my sister threw it out, it looks terrible.
Given Kings Quest 4: The Periods of Rosella, I just assume the mother-daughter conversation is about tampons like all those commercials

I wish Luachjin and Takarifreak would go back and play King's Quest 2 since that's the only one they didn't play. It just feels like they didn't finish the whole story without it.
I can never bring myself to fully hate King's Quest 7. It has a bizarre charm that I can't describe. I still consider it part of the King's Quest franchise.
On the other hand, I have no love in my heart for Mask of Eternity.
Is that "bizarre charm" making strange faces and having only 8 fingers? (though I seem to recall some of the other King's Quest games having the 8 finger thing)
Nah, more like this game reminds me a lot of some other Adventure Games I played in the day. Mostly Putt-Putt and Toonstruck.
I loved this game growing up, I don't understand what's to hate about it, I like that sidequests are minimal and that its all story, I love the replay ability factor. This game as well as 5 and 6 were my favorites, my least favorite being 3 due to everything being timed.

Probably because it's nothing like its predecessor. If you play I-VI and then play VII you are bound to be disappointed by..just about everything. You can see the love, time and dedication that was put into the other ones. This..doesn't even look like it was made by the same people.
I love the majority of the King's Quest series...but this game is a terrible disgrace. Maybe you found it "fun", but for myself and many others, it doesn't even begin to compare to the games before it. This is NOT a case of shitting on a game that doesn't deserve to be shit on...it's pretty justified here.
that hate is basically due to sierra ruining their flagship franchise by jettisoning just about everything that made their other games so good. [see king's quest 6 and 3, for examples of what i mean.] - seven was just so completely out of sorts with the rest of the canon that people don't generally take it very seriously.
I know one thing we can all agree on: Mask of Eternity was the _best_ King's Quest game ever.
Knowing the Internet, someone will miss the truckload of sarcasm dripping from that remark.

when i play mask of eternity, i don't think of it as "king's quest." i think of it as sierra saying: "hey, that tomb raider game...!" and then making a game like that with a male lead.
under those conditions, it's a kind of middling, forgettable action game, which i'm ok with.

I don't understand how anyone could dislike KQ7 and but still like the earlier KQ games. They're ALL incredibly hokey games and hard to take seriously. This game just takes the cartoonish comedy over the top and embraces it. And it actually has some visuals and music that are aren't hilariously primitive (unlike most of the earlier games).
I played games 1 through 7. I liker them all, but KQVII is my favorite, hands down.

it went through versions. there was a dos version and then a windows 3.1 version. they didn't change a /lot/ between versions, but the ui did undergo some small changes.

IIRC you can change walking speed with the + button. I remember it took retsupurae forever to figure that out, and they hated it.

It is true that the game was animated by the CDi people. Some of the game. If you notice similarities, there's a reason.

well, it seems I remembered this game much better through nostalgia ... I played this game as a tiny child with my dad and them alone all the time and it was so amazing back in the day lmao
If this really is the updated version, you should be able to increase the walking speed by pressing +. They didn't add an option to the GUI for that, or any indication of walking speed other than how fast the character actually walks.
And while I agree that the graphics don't hold up by today's standards, I think it's worth pointing out that Disney wasn't working on CD-ROM in the 30s. The game lacks a lot of what made earlier King's Quests good, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it completely terrible. It's just limited in some unfortunate ways.
I don't know what they're fucking talking about, this game, including every other King's Quest, was amazing for their times.

FINALLY. I was so disappointed when you uploaded the video where flushed this game down the toilet, I'm so happy you're doing this :D
Okay, the game has terrible cutscenes & a different art style than the first six games, but truly, this game is no different from the first six. The puzzles follow the same sort of logic & everything is just as it was in the first six, we've traveled to other worlds besides Daventry, people. This one just likes wordplay a touch more. It just looks a little different, but if we all nitpicked about changes in style in Sierra games we'd be out one Leisure Suit Larry 7, which Lucah ALSO played & enjoyed in spite of how different it was.
This was the first King's Quest game that I played & even after playing the first six I still find this one enjoyable. The unique backgrounds alone are beautiful to look at. As far as technical problems are concerned, all these old point & clicks have their hiccups, & this game CAN be sped up. It's, such a, shame that no one seems to genuinely enjoy this game based on its predecessors alone because underneath the clunky animation, you find a similar, enjoyable experience. Or at least, I always thought places like Ooga Booga & the Vulcanix Underground were among the most unique settings in any adventure game. It captures the imagination.

Thank you! I didn't even realize until recently that so many KQ fans hate this game. Sure I played and enjoyed it when I was very young and impressionable, and no I don't like this style of animation as much, but I really like 7 and think it's almost as good as five and six. Why are these guys playing the game if they're just going to bitch about it the whole time, just going into it with a negative attitude.

Actually Lucah, do you know how many times I requested this game, you finally get around to it, since a new kings quest game was announced in the last month, it's good you got around to it.
Hrm, I don't remember the quality being quite this bad in the new King's Quest Collection. I admit that this entry in the King's Quest series definitely did change from the previous six versions, but the real upset was the entry after that: Mask of the Sun. At least this still retained the point-and-click style. Looking at it now, you could actually perceive the place as a sense of Etheria being a messed up version of hell, purgatory, and heaven.
To be fair, all these old King's Quest games had bad audio quality. Compared to 1-6, I think the graphics actually look pretty great (minus the animation, but even that's beefed up compared to the previous 6).
Amazing how much can change in one iteration of a series... King's Quest Mask of Eternity (which is number 8 if I recall correctly) is SO much better...
