- The ITV Network: Part 6 - UTV (Ulster Television)
Our journey through the ITV Network continues here on the Ident Review Extra! This time around, we're moving on over to Northern Ireland! To take a look at the main company that served and continues to serve the region after several decades! It's Ulster Television, or UTV for short!
The Ident Review Extra began in the April of 2020 and covered all of the idents seen on BBC2 during the 1990's and early 2000's. After a Christmas run in December, the series has had a long rest. But now it's back, taking a trip through all the different regions of the ITV Network!

UTV was also the last ITV region/channel to have in vision continuity (up until 2016), courtesy of the iconic Julian Simmons (who is also the longest serving continuity announcer of the ITV network and quite possibly all of British and Irish tv). I'll never forget Julian's camp introductions for shows like Corrie and X Factor
I’m shocked that Grampian, STV and UTV are the only three ITV regional channels to survive the ITV October 28. 2002 rebrand and that STV and UTV are the only two to survive into the modern decades 2010s and 2020s.
UTV was only killed by Coronavirus. If not for that, they'd still be using the UTV brand - at least until ITV's next wider rebrand, at which point I now expect the last vestiges of the UTV brand (primarily the news) will be rebranded.
@@JASpiring UTV is just ITV1 NI now.
Ulster - along with Channel - made few or no programmes for network consumption, so viewers from outside the relevant areas saw little of their output, other than clips from It’ll Be Alright On The Night - although Ulster did a version of the game show Password for the network, poaching host Gordon Burns from Granada - didn’t last long!
Sadly one of Internet freinds
James moulton,died
Yes, he was the guy who did logo remakes and I like his work but I never knew that he had health problems.
So sorry to hear that :(
I have to say, for such a long-standing channel, UTV is quite interesting.
Certainly is!
If I do have a favourite ident from UTV (Ulster Television), then it would be the one from 1993. The CGI is absolutely wonderful, I like how the yellow/purple coloured flags forms the UTV logo, and I also like the peaceful music too!
4:07 I'm curious about the source of that, given that NI only has 5 cities (3 of which didn't have city status until '94 or later iirc) . Perhaps it was the largest settlements at the time?
The 1988 ident came from the opening titles of 'Six Tonight' which replaced 'Good Evening Ulster' - I think it was a low-rent 'plaster' between the lollipop and the CGI ident. ua-cam.com/video/OrjR0CirEOc/v-deo.html
My opinions:
• 1959 ident: It's very simplistic, like other black-and-white idents. The music can be relaxing, but it might be unnerving for some viewers along with the darkness.
• 1969 ident: No comment, it's just a still ident to start the colour television.
• 1981 ident: The way the name appears is kinda cheesy. Also, the entire design of the logo was set on a turntable and the background was merely a black cloth.
• 1987 ident: This one is uninteresting compared to the other computer-generated idents.
• 1989 ident: Good CGI for sure, the music is also good.
• 1993 ident: One of my favourite idents from UTV! The CGI is good and the music is peaceful!
• 2000s idents: No comment. These idents are okay for me.
Ulster television is my favourite region thanks
(The South East is my region)
No problem!
6:53 thats the hapenny bridge in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland technically a diffrent country from NothernIreland. Even before cable or satellite tv we got BBC Northern Ireland, Channel 4 and UTV .
UTV used to be an independent channel but now a iTV O&O channel
Brilliant video Ulster TV on October 31st which is Halloween will turn 62 years of broadcasting after Anglia which launched on October 27th of that year back in 1959
Probably one of my least favourite regional logos this one, it just reminds me of a life support machine which just isn't that appealing!
The earliest ulster television ident had music from an irish folk song when the mountains of mourne sweep down to the sea . Were they the only ITV station to use a folk song from thier area as a theme fir thier ident ?
nice! (Thx for doing my region :D)
No problem!
something about the northern irish guy clkearly purtting on an RP accent is funny af to me
Yeeeeoh TV!
What channel you gonna do after ITV’s idents?
Request:london
Tbh never heard of UTV so thanks Adam not only for the video but for introducing a new TV network
Not surprising since most people in England don't realise NI is part of the UK and continue to call it Ireland.
Does this mean we get Harlech/HTV next?
maybe... maybe not... we'll have to wait and see 👀
From Scotland to Northern Ireland, great video Adam!
Thanks Roger!
@@AdamMartyn No worries!
Great Ident
Years ago when I worked in a local newspaper office I was at the Boss's desk looking for something and found a couple of the 'telly on a stick' logos (minus the stick) they were paperweights
The Christmas one 😭👌🏻❤
Great video
Thanks Thomas!
The tune in the first ident is the last bar of "The Mountains of Mourne".
One of the two ITV regions that still kept their names…
All I gotta say is well done and keep going!
Thanks pal! Full steam ahead! 💪
