well of course a lot of stuff is due to emotionalism and a lot of it is learned behavior (particularly in the black church). Black people are a historically musical and creative people so a lot of stuff we do is bloated with vestiges of our natural and inherent creativity. Now it's possible to preach without hooping of course, but the hoop adds an effect. Basically, the louder the hoop and the deeper the bass the more we think some1 is anointed! hope i could help.
