  • We take a quick look the new Volvo V90 Wagon that carries the size and quality to rival many luxury SUVs. While the premium segments are dominated mostly by BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, Volvos resurgence in design and quality makes this an interesting alternative. While SUV and CUVs have been hot, this wagon will make many drool at the prospect of having something different.

    The underbody segment is one of the things that makes you different from the rest of the reviewers out there and therefore better to me.
    There's so much to see about suspension tech, underbody aero, build and parts quality.
    If you would stop doing it that would erase 50% of the reason why tech geeks watch your vids.
    Quite baffling that some give you a hard time for it. I'd suggest you ignore them completely.

    So completely agree with you. This layout is essentially the perfect car, a bit more ground clearance but not much BUT a buttload of space that's easily reachable for all heights. This shape is perfection. Yet we have people making sedans and SUVs like crazy, WHY?

    I know I'm in the minority of American car buyers, but I've been a huge wagon fan since 2004 when I purchased my first (Audi A6 Allroad). I've got to say Savagegeese, this is my favorite car review... well... ever! Honest, thoughtful, playful, really entertaining, and one of the first that didn't just show me everything I can see by going to the manufacturer website. Keep up the good work... • @Doggepp
    @Doggepp 6 років тому +22

    I liked this review, and especially the more in depth look of the suspension and under side, havent seen anyone do that on a V90 yet. One thing to note is, volvo also is one of the few (if not only?) car manufacturers that puts a jacking point in the middle of each side of the car, so that you can put your jack in the middle, and change both wheels by only jacking it up once. A big plus for us here in Sweden, where changing to winter wheels/tires is a must.
    I just ordered one of these last week. With the smalles D4 diesel engine though, I went for almost fully loaded, and cheaped out on the engine, rather than getting one of the higher horsepower alternatives. I
    Also, a note about the 4 cyl. Whether we like it or not. Small displacement is the future. Sweden and the EU is most likely going to demolish any dreams of big engines soon enough. Here in Sweden we have a yearly tax of the car, which is based on a few things, most notably the emission of the car. If you go past a specific point in how much your car emits, your tax goes up in an extreme rate. Some cars go from $200 to $2000 in yearly tax. And thats just the start. You wont be able to drive cars that emits a certain ammount in cities soon either. So volvo is just looking out for people in the future.

      So, 4 Years in, how would you describe your experience? I`m seriously considering a V90 CC D4 (not wanting to have those power pulse problems) as a replacement of my W205 wagon as i moved to an area with lots of snow. Do you still have the car? any problems? what is the swedish take on it? I can`t find that much info here in germany as not many have been sold here unfortunately

    • @Doggepp
      @Doggepp 2 роки тому

      @@jkay303 Hey man! All and all I would say it is a great car, and definitely packs a punch for the money, since its like £15-20k less than an A6 Allroad with similar equipment for example. Living in northern"ish" Sweden, its an insanely capable car no matter what the weather is. I have driven it through unplowed roads with like 25-30cm fresh snow when my parents couldnt get to the job etc, no problems at all. I would say it really shines in the winter. Comfort wise aswell, super comfy. Towards the end though, I started to get some reliability issues. Keyless unlock started to fail every now and again, the central screen went black 2-3 times over a year. And the gps/volvo on call unit in the car was replaced on warranty, and the drivers seat heater stopped working. I actually was a bit scared of having more issues, so this summer I sold the car, and I have now ordered a new Golf R instead, with 5 years of warranty. I loved the V90, and I can recommend it to people, I just think I had some bad luck with my example towards the end. If volvo offered better/longer warranty, I would consider one again. But for £55-60k and only 24mo warranty, I decided to get back in to a VW (I've had multiple Golf GTI's and R's in the past)
      Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions :)

      @@Doggepp Hey dude! Thanks for taking the time! That actually helps me a lot and makes it somewhat easier to take the step! You`re right, i think second hand buyers will have to live with failing electronics more and more in the future. I`m not in the market for a brand new car (already buying a house and starting a family) so a second hand one will have to do. But i want a reliable one, as it will have to last a while. The current Merc W205 has already 170k km on it and runs perfectly. But with RWD you can imagine how its doing on snow and ice. Its unusable, especially on the hills and windy roads here. I also really like the design of the Volvos in general, and prefer it to the geman cars. So i take from it that you didnt expericence mayor problems. How many Kms did you put on it? Oh, one thing: did you have the B&W System or the standard Audio? how would you rate it? Thanks again for answering and have fun with the Golf R i`m sure that one will be fun!

      @@jkay303 No problem at all! And yeah, volvo is the way to go if you have a family. The V90 just even feels safe to drive.
      I put around 70k km on the car, didnt drive it much these past 2 years due to working from home.
      I had the regular sound system, I have driven a car with the BW sound system, and the sound is very good, but I didnt want to pay that price. The stock sound system is also pretty good as stock sound systems go. I have however ordered the Harmann Kardon in the new golf R, but its like €800 compared to the €3000 or whatever the BW was when buying the volvo :)

    It's nice to see Volvo back to making great cars again. I had a Volvo 850 (before the Ford buyout) and I loved that car. It was 20 years old and still didn't have rust on the door panels (I lived in the northeast), whereas cars I had that were 12 years old had holes in them. Sometimes it was a pain because small stuff would break, like the power antenna, radio, A/C, but that thing would go and go and go. As long as you fix things when they wear/break, and do your maintenance, you couldn't kill that car short of crashing it, and even then you would be safer than in other cars. It had some of the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in too, just a shy short of Nissan's Zero gravity seats.
    I really miss that car and would buy a brand new Volvo now if I could afford it.

      I recently purchased a V90 CC Ocean Race and did the overseas delivery program. While I was in Sweden we endured some very real winter conditions. They ranged from blowing snow, to packed snow, to flat out icy conditions. The all wheel drive in slippery conditions performs better than my 4Runner (although its older), better than new Subarus, and a number of other all wheel drive cars I have driven. Even in the icy conditions it felt very predictable and not the slightest bit jittery. By jittery, I mean that you can feel when the system slips and finds a wheel that has traction. This all happens in the background, and makes the car feel very locked in to slick pavement. I was utterly impressed.

    The "buying public" does not care about how a car handles - they care about the "view of the road" and "higher sitting height"...whatever that means. What they don't realize is the significant handling diff between an SUV and a wagon and the assumption that sitting a few inches higher gives them some kind of advantage. That MIGHT have been true a decade or so ago but now who are you going to "see over" with your better view of the road...certainly not the plethora of OTHER SUV's, tractor trailers, pickup trucks, etc...oh yeah, I guess you can still see over us wagon drivers as we do circles around your clunky SUV(not talking to you Porsche Cayenne owners!). Hi Savagegeese! I think I know why you're experienceing what you call "micro bounce" from the suspension. I noticed that you've driving the press car Tom Voelk tested back in August, so I suspect that this car has some miles on it right? I had the same thing on my 2016 XC90, the car just felt less settled and sorted over harsh impacts. More so than newer press cars I drove. So I think there might be an "issue" with the bushings Volvo use, or have used. After driving a ton of press cars along side my own XC90 (produced back in 2015), my car felt less settled and even harder - something reviewers have commented on early SPA platform cars. So Volvo have fixed or keep fixing with better bushings, or this is something that happens when miles are put on the cars.

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  6 років тому

      +Kris Rifa I have noticed this on the Volvos I tested. It maybe bushing choices. This car I believe had around 10k miles. The S90 was the same the XC90 not so much but that had air suspension.

    • @KrisRifa
      @KrisRifa 6 років тому

      I've found this puzzling my self, but I think it might be that the bushings go "bad" after a certain number of miles. I drove my XC90 57000miles, and it only got more and more pronounced with time. Especially the last few months as I also drove newer and newer press cars with less miles on them. The last press I drove was a V90CC with only 7k miles on it, and that car seemed very settled though it was on 20" wheels.

    I tell people all the time, Volvo quality is top notch. No rusty parts and it's so solid. Every think you touch is high quality. 10 year old Volvo drives like a 2 year old Volvo. A 2 years old Subaru drives like a 10 year old Subaru.

      +Polestar Wes some people give me a hard time about showing the underneath the cars but this is one of those small details that means a lot. Volvo has some issues with reliability and parts being more expensive but as you said it's very true about the feeling of the car versus a vehicle like Subaru

      +SavageGeese Volvo's labor costs at the dealer have also risen quite a bit. $135 a hour near me in NJ; it's no joke! The resale value has really taken a hit as a result.

      @v60polestar88 6 років тому

      GRat9717 Volvo resale does suck I will admit that, but $135 hr is not bad. Honda dealer is $125 and VW is $144 where I live

      I'm not sure if the MB/BMW dealers around here are quite $135. VW sounds over the top for you. This is why I do all of my own work (outside of that which is included with vehicle purchase)!!!

    It's amazing how far Volvo has come... a LONG time ago, my first hand me down car was an 87 Volvo 240 wagon... Even back then people associated Volvo with being a premium brand, but my 240 was worse than most RENTALS now. It had ROLL windows, manual seats (and we had an 87 T-bird that had power seats....) an interior that would be at home in a P71 Vic, and HVAC controls / dash switches that wouldn't have looked out of place in a sheet metaled over dash in a hot rod... The thing WAS a tank and survived enough abuse that would have made me UA-cam famous if it were present time, but it's just amazing seeing how NICE and well designed they are now!

    I'm thinking of a Volvo as my next car. I drive an SUV now because at my age it's hard for me to get in and out of a low car. The Cross Country might be the answer if it's easy for me to get in and out of. Anybody know how the seat height is compared to a crossover?

    Solid cars today solid cars in the past, even back with their first cars you can tell this was a special kind of car manufacturer. They lose with styling in my opinion but since they are still in business may call it winning I only see New Jersey and New York

    I have watched your videos for a long time, and as your videos evolve, you are getting old. Not an insult but just an observation.
    In retrospect, I have owned a 2000 S60 T6, it crapped out at 60K, from that point on, I wouldn't use Volvo and high quality in the same sentence. I also want to mention high quality to me means its also highly reliable. Would love to see a video on long term review on some cars, Volvo could be one of those. Any challenges to my statement are welcome.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 4 роки тому

      What happened? My 02 s80 T6 is rolling along happily at 156K miles and really, it's not had many major repairs. The early 2000 Volvos aren't today's Volvos. The ones today are more refined. They're also more complex so I can't say anything about the reliability or durability.

    I understand that Volvo has backers now. Volvo may be a different company from the past. Almost every person in my circle of friends and family that has purchased a Volvo has had disabling problems where they could no longer drive the car and had to get rid of it. My Aunt loved her Volvo Wagon after the 4th break down and being at the dealer months at a time she tapped out at 84,000 miles. Only one person I know that has an S40 12 years old that has given zero problems. I understand that that is just my own personal experience.

    • @vernonprice5986
      @vernonprice5986 6 років тому

      +rockn roll - Uh... you sound like somebody who doesn't know a single fucking thing about the CTS-V. Let me give you a hint: When it came out in 2009, it broke the world record for fastest Nurburgring lap in a 4-door car. Does that sound like it's "TRYING" to be a sports car? Or does that sound more like it's actually doing that, and beating a lot of ACTUAL sports cars in the process?
      My advice to you is to do some research and understand what the CTS-V is before trying to have an opinion on it.

  • @matthewmain7076

    Would you consider offering the Monroney for each car you review and/or driving a predetermined loop with all vehicles to offer a real world mpg figure?

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  6 років тому

      +Matthew Main I actually do drive the same loops for all cars. So usually my MPG should always be the same tests. I dont usually talk about all the features and cost break down. But will make a better effort at doing so.

    • @matthewmain7076
      @matthewmain7076 6 років тому

      I appreciate it. While major automotive outlets publishes mpg figures for their time with the car, the accuracy of those numbers leaves me wanting. What was the ambient temperature, elevation, etc. If each car is driven on the same stretch of road in a similar manner it should produce a realistic figure which can be cross-referenced. No one expects that you treat the V90 XC and the WRX identically, but for a portion of your testing, you could.

    Seven seats in the XC-90 vs 5 seats in the V90 Cross Country. That's why someone would choose the SUV vs the wagon. Even though V90 R design is clearly the superior product out of the 3 choices.

      Volvos are ultra-sensitive to psi. It's amazing that's the case with the new ones. But there is something a little weird about the compression/rebound on Volvos.
