Exorcist 2 The Heretic: Is The Awfully Good Sequel Worse Than Believer?

- Now that David Gordon Green has sent another horror franchise to hell with THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER, the time is right this Halloween for Awfully Good Movies to tackle one of the most awfully good sequels ever made… EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC!
While the late William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty were hellbent against any follow-ups to their seminal horror classic, the suits at Warner Bros. felt otherwise and rolled camera on a follow-up four years later from another prestige filmmaker, John Boorman, despite Boorman passing on the first film and calling it a “repulsive” tale about “child abuse”. So instead, Linda Blair returns as Regan MacNeil one last time (until REPOSSESSED and EXORCIST: BELIEVER, that is) to fight the satanic demon nipping at her heels once more, thanks to a mind synchronization device that is just the tip of this sequel’s deeply insane iceberg.
Whether it’s a visibly drunk Richard Burton as the new priest sent to save Regan’s soul and clear Father Merrin’s name, Louise Fletcher slumming it after her Oscar for Nurse Ratched playing Regan’s harried psychologist in place of the absent Ellen Burstyn, or James Earl Jones wearing a locust costume atop his head, they’re all complicit in John Boorman’s craziest concoction since ZARDOZ, with the now-debunked pseudoscience of ESP (“the sixth sense”) proving central to the plot in overlong hallucination sequences and flashbacks with a begrudgingly returning Max von Sydow as the young Father Merrin. And did I forget to mention the demon’s name is Pazuzu? (Yes, I know it’s his name in the book, but still!)
It all combines to create one of the most spectacular failures in the history of sequels, with all the scares now replaced by unintentional laughs or long stretches of boredom… you know, much like EXORCIST: BELIEVER! But at least THE HERETIC has some pretty photography, a great Morricone score, and an unlikely fan in none other than Martin Scorsese. Yes, folks, Scorsese thinks that EXORCIST II is cinema, which is more than anybody can say for EXORCIST: BELIEVER.

I say this in defense of E2: it’s technically well made for the time, has great cinematography, a pretty damn good Score by Ennio Morricone… and at least it tried to do something different. Whether it succeeded is a different story, but I can always appreciate ambition. And John Boorman (Deliverance, Zardoz, Excalibur) is certainly no hack.
Totally agree. The cinematography is stunning.
The director of Excalibur did The Heretic?! That’s freaking cool!
And yes, I totally agree with what you said.
I'd love to see E2: Judgment Day!
Exorcist: Believer officially surpassed The Heretic as the WORST Exorcist sequel when they paid Ellen Burnstyn an ungodly amount of money to complain about the patriarchy, attempt a Girl Boss moment against Satan, and get her eyes poked out...which kind of proves the damn patriarchy was right all along to keep her out of any possessed girl's room.
At least Ellen knew if she was going to be in the film with that script, she was going to need a major payday.
Pretty genius of her to be honest.
I don't think it was any crafty move on her part: I just don't think she wanted to do it!@@ccateni28
The way they badgedered Ellen was reprehensible, the only reason she did this garbage fire reboot is because she made them do a fundraiser for a charity that she supports on top of basically giving her 10 times what they originally offered her
@letzbunited6742 Ellen seems to be the smartest person in that production and she had the last laugh. She got a crap load of money and everything she wanted with the charity part.
@ccateni28 Totally agree, I just still thinkbit was rather disrespectful and tactless that they nagged her so badly. You can tell in the few scenes she is in she really does not want to be there lol
As someone who is on the autistic spectrum and someone who Lost his voice and learned speak again from imitation I can definitely say that The exorcist 2 the heretic is still better representation to autistic people then the predator
The behind the scenes antics of Exorcist 2 would have been a wild time!
At least Exorcist II was ambitious. I cant say the same for this new movie that constantly tries to play it safe. You cant make a follow-up to The Exorcist and play it safe
i loved the original, can't stand the Heretic, Exorcist III was way better and the last 2 just sucked...BIG...Donkey...Balls! Although, they made the 4th one twice. The theatrical version sucked. But there is another version that was shot and not released in the theaters that is supposed to be totally different. I've never seen that version.
@@kurtsevick2008What did you think of believer?
@@ccateni28 1st half was good. Had a lot of elements from the original. I thought the inclusion of Regan's mom was unnecessary. It didn't do anything for the movie but bring in the older fans like me. One minute she's stating she can't do exorcisms. 10 minutes later she's "trying" one. She kinda deserved that cross action. LOL As far as the exorcism part, every exorcism in every Exorcist movie after the original pales in comparison. The stuff they could get away with back then was much more visceral I liked idea of the dual exorcisms. I didn't mind the inclusion of the different "branches" of Christianity. Sorry, don't know how else to put that. I didn't however like that they made the Catholic priest weak. I'm not Catholic but that is the faith that is the whole basis for the story. I'd give it a C at best. SORRY FOR THE NOVEL! hehe
I utterly agree, aside from that dark as fuck ending, it went as safe as you could with an exorcism movie.
Being ambitious only gets you so far lol.
As of me typing this, DGG has jumped ship from Exorcist: Deceiver and Universal has delayed the feature until they find a new director to take over. Universal Pictures are seriously paying the price for the failure of their first entry.
Painful. 400 million dollars only for it to backfire like it did. I wanted to like Believer. But they messed up with it.
RIP Richard Burton, Louise Flecher, & Max Von Sydow
I like it because Linda Blair looks so hot in this movie.
Hubba hubba...those chubby cheeks and those tits!
She was seventeen so calm down.
I was too. No harm.@@Mildredpotka
7 days late for this but you finally did it! Thank you!
Exorcist II: The Heretic may be God-awful but it atleast tried to do something *unique*
Unlike the believer which felt like an complete cash grab.
For it's time, The Heretic does have some stunning visuals and some nice shots. Linda Blair does a good performance and the soundtrack is beautiful!
I used to have "Magic and Ecstasy" on my iPod back when I still manually managed my MP3s back in college, it's a shame that you don't hear much of it in the actual movie, much like Ennio's score for THE THING.
@@JeonardShadby505yes very true! Happy Halloween too 🎃
E2 is a good movie. Believer is yet another P anderverse movie..
Exorcist II was a cash grab though made by a person who didn't understand Exorcist even more than Green.
Hysterical video, Jesse. Great job. The Heretic is beyond saving. 😊 Happy Halloween! 🎃
I haven't seen Believer yet but I'd happily watch Repossessed again.
I was really harsh on it in 2018 cause I was going through a hard depression from a cancer diagnosis in the family, but nowadays I think it's harmless stupid fun. Leslie Nielsen was such a cornerstone of my childhood that I cannot hate a movie with him in it.
At least Exorcist 2: The Heretic had a rocking trailer and Bill Fraker's cinematography was excellent. I remember an LA news report after the film's disastrous opening when they interviewed John Boorman in the middle of a desperate re-edit. He said he was afraid he hadn't "fed enough Christians to the lions" which I found hilarious.
Poor Louise Fletcher what's a textbook example of the Oscar winner curse. Between this and the underperforming Invaders from Mars, her career was in a slump until Star Trek DS9.
I just *love* how Movies from the 70s were shot. I don't know if its the film stock used at the time or how they lighted the shots but the image has a certain quality to it. And E2 is no exception, for all its flaws: It looks stunning. And this visual quality alone puts it above _Believer._ That, and *ambition.* It takes balls to go about making a Sequel with the express purpose of making it something entirely different than the Original, doing the exact opposite of what audience expected or *wanted*, making an "antidote" as Boorman put it.
It wasn't a gamble that played off, and I wonder how no one in the Studio put a stop to it (then again, it was the era where directors were given carte-blanche if they had a successful Film or two under their belt - like Michael Cimino when he did _Heaven's Gate)._ But I have to commend the director for not just blandly going through the motions. In a way, its like Rian Johnson and _The last Jedi,_ but, crazy as it sounds, I almost prefer E2 and the reason for that are the two Directors' intentions: When Boorman says he disliked the Original Movie, I believe him. When Johnson says, he's a Star Wars-Fan, I don't buy it.
Also, who gets a hi rise apartment with a balcony that has openings in a glass rail so anyone can fall to their death?
Brilliant, funny and a great video. Loving the content.
I enjoyed this episode more than even usual. Nice!👊🏻
E2's story might be batshit insane, but least its entertaining with the great cinematography and score.
Believer had neither and felt more like a bad parody.
It’s a slow burn but it’s a decent movie for the time it was made. It’s definitely not as scary as the original but it still has its moments. The tap dancing scene is something else but I do like how it coincides with the father being attacked by the uhh “European” types
As soon as some one mentions this movie, all i can think about is that strange experiment room of glass and red frames. Thats it. That's the only lasting memory i have of a movie. A weird room.
I'm old enough to have seen this on opening night. As we went in, the crowd from the afternoon screening warned us to run away. In the end, the line "I understand -- but the world won't!" got one of the biggest laughs I've ever heard. Terrible as it is, "Heretic" has trippy ideas, high production values, great cinematography, and a genuinely fine performance by Linda Blair. This movie and "Zardoz" prove that the great John Boorman did WAY too many drugs in the '70s. But even his worst movie is still interesting enough to justify multiple viewings.
Exorcist 2 is a pretty good movie. At least it's not a "Slasher who can never die, even if you shoot him 20 times and burn him to death 10 times" type of movie..
You're comparing apples to oranges
Still my favourite fact about this movie is that John Boorman hated The Exorcist and then made The Exorcist 2 nothing like the original movie. BTW John Boorman was asked to do The Exorcist but turned it down
I wonder if the studio knew at the time he hated the original. The biggest money maker in the world, you'd think they'd want something in the same vein.
@@JasonHauser125 He was coming off the success of Deliverance. They wanted the name.
That noise maker thingy is called a bullroarer!
I luuuuuuv Exorcist II. It’s funky. Luv the big red Tic-Tac Warner Bros. logo. Love the tribal music with those native percussion instruments in the edited version. I especially love watching the edited version on VHS. Looks gritty and oval. Reminds me of when I first saw it. Luv the 70s funky sci-finess. I dunno. I just like it. It takes up a big part of my brain because I grew up loving it. I always feel like I’m acting like one of the characters.
I actually enjoyed some parts of this movie. But most I didn't .
i can take this film as seriously as i can that regan survived having her neck broken twice in the original
Happy Halloween, Jesse Shade. Thank you for giving us spooky treat.
I'm waiting for a backlash to the backlash!
I've only seen Exorcist 2 once but I quite enjoyed it. It's not a patch on the first one, obviously, but there's a demented energy about it that works; John Boorman is a director with a vision who will put that vision onscreen even if it's completely nuts. I also appreciated that it tried to do something completely new with the premise and didn't act as a less effective remake of the first film like the other big horror sequel of the era, Jaws 2.
Max must have thought he was part of some artsy masterpiece with those scenes in Africa
Personally, I don't care for it at all. Linda Blair has stated that the plot riddled version released was no where the version that was supposed to be made when she signed on. Cinematography and music score are nothing to a movie if the plot is confounding and confusing. If you're looking for the aforementioned aspects, you would be better off reading an issue of Life magazine while listening to Mozart.
Hilarious 😂 great job
Thank you for the New upload
Exorcist 2 is a creative, unique film. superior to ExorSHIT believer, a desperate cash in imitation. had that film focused on the girls disappearing and the belief of possession and their parents re-finding their beliefs. No actual possession, no exorcism. it would have been great. but it's just a joke, same as the halloween trilogy, imitations (they're REMAKES). Exorcist 2 is a good film, the true sequel, and 3 is where it ends. EXORSHIT BELIEVER IS THE WORST
Creative, unique, utterly not scary and painfully boring.
Anything produced that does not use CGI is better than anything produced that does use it.
Exorcist 3 is the true Exorcist 2 and the only Exorcist sequel that exists.
Agree 100% although The Ninth Configuration is an interesting quasi sequel.
Exorcist 2: electric pahzoozoo
Richard Burton was known to overact in a lot of his movies. And this guy was a Shakespearean actor.
He was drunk every day
It isn't the fact that that Heretic is better--
It's the fact that believer is so below par that is actually snatched heretic's crap crown
I know it seems impossible but I’m doing a huge fan edit to this movie with screen tests and interviews from the first movie.
My goal is to remove all the ultra low budget Africa stuff and go for of a psychological type movie.
Also music from the original movie and flashbacks from Dominion will be used.
Watching the Exorcist TV series on Hulu and surprised how good it is. Being a network series, it has its issues. But I dare say it's the best sequel to the Exorcist.
I saw the first two episodes and was quite enjoying it. Then it was canceled that same week (lol) and I never got back to it. Will have to catch back up.
The series and “Exorcist III:Legion” are both first rate.
Burton stayed drunk on the set
I enjoyed part. 2
I haven't seen either The Heretic or Believer, but if I was forced to choose one, it would be The Heretic. The Believer with their 'Patriarchy' nonsense and then that big multi religion Exorcist - Get out of here with that sh*t.
Exorcist II is one of my favorite movie
I watched Exorcist Believer for the second time. As a huge fan of the first film, it is by no measure in the same league as it. Once you realise this and just watch it without that in mind, it's actually pretty good on its own merits.
I totally respect that, as someone who didn't despise the HALLOWEEN sequels to my very core. There are way worse films out there on a technical level, but I just thought all the promise got wasted past the first half hour. But agree to disagree, and thank you for watching!
14:45 Oh wow, I didn't know Jason Miller wrote
That Championship Season. That was a great play!
Of all the films where a main character shares the same surname as Lamont, it has to be this shit film!
People were actually injured on the original exorcist
I’d definitely watch the Heretic all day everyday rather than the awful Believer trash.
I Honestly believe it was better Than Believer. Believer Was Not Very Good.
Why does it look more like a Bollywood Carrie ripoff more than it does an actual Exorcist sequel, minus the telekinesis stuff?
E2 looks like a hilariously misguided attempt of an Exorcist movie that thinks it's one thing when it's really the exact opposite. How the hell does an incredibly talented and skilled director like Martin Scorsese like this hilarious disaster of a 'movie' more than the absolutely terrifying and actually great original Exorcist. We are all human after all. lol
26 min. Jo Blo watched it so that we wouldnt have to. We thank you for your service.😮😮😮
I can't believe that James Earl Jones would even consider being in this garbage film
Kittyy Winn is the on;y reason to see this. Too bad she retired from acting in 1978. She could have become a megastar!!!!! Can you believe she is, as of this writing, 80?!?
I would say it'd have been nice if she came back for the new EXORCIST, since II canonically doesn't exist in it, but why would I put that evil on her?
The problem with Exorcist 2 was it had TOO MUCH psychology and NOT ENOUGH HORROR. IMO.
Which one is funnier to dunk on is what I want to know.
The people who made this pos is in this room!
When I heard that I laughed hysterically since thats exactly how I felt after watching this movie.
I love Exorcist II Heretic. I like it better than The Exorcist which did not impress me at all!!
Call me crazy but I actually prefered The Exorcist 2 to Believer. Believer was just awful and what they did with Chris MacNeil was ridiculous.
If the newest film is worst than this trash then they really did something
Heretic is still better than Believer, it has some half decent ideas and does have legit ties to the original movie.
Believer has nothing to do with anything, even having Ellen Burstyn is a poor selling point with her 'patriarchy' comment 😆😆😆
I was embarrassed for her, not only is it a terribly out of character line, but it's not even remotely true! Those priests ended up dead to save your daughter, having you out of the room was doing her a favor. Ugh, just one of many bungles in that piece of crap.
Heretic destroys the original movie more and doesn't attempt to even be scary.
"Alcoholism jokes are funny."
I love this movie. I saw it when it came out, and it's still as beautifully cheesy as always decades later.
0:18 NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Why won’t this franchise end?!??!!???!!!????
I’m sure this Halloween Cinematic Universe is gonna Fail!!!!! It’s gonna Bomb!!!!!!
I have two words for you: Dark Universe. Unless I see one production still, I won't believe that the HCU will actually become a thing.
I like it! Seen as a stand alone. Still much better then the extremely stupid Beleiver. Got it on VHS and 2atch it now and again.

Not only is this definitely the worst of the Exorcist sequels, and not only is this one of the worst sequels ever, but it is just simply one of the worst movies ever made, period.
Which is ironic given it's a well produced film all things considered, bogged down by a bad script.
Highlander2 the quickening gets my vote. Agreed?
There's only 2 sequels and part 3 is the true sequel.
I never liked the original movie. I love horror movies and the Exorcist wasn't scary for me.
I love this Movie. 1 of my favorite so bad It's funny Movies.
Hey yo - about that ESP reference: umm. Have you actually read the original novel? Proving that the moving furniture is actually due to demonic possession (thus necessitating a catholic exorcist) and not teenage ESP is an actual plot point. Lol.
I’m pretty sure the French priest bit about mental telepathy was lifted straight from the first book.
Well, shit, you got me there! I did not get that far ahead in the book, I was just going by what the movie had established, which was quite absurd in my opinion. My apologies for that screw-up, but thank you for telling me. I hope to genuinely learn from any mistakes people call me out on. I hope you liked the video otherwise.
@@JeonardShadby505 yeah, it was a great video!! The ESP stuff in the original book is so strange. It simply takes the position that ESP is real and commonplace, and there are passages where it seems Blatty is trying to convince the reader of this. Characters are like “well it could all just be ESP” as if that would make it okay and acceptable, and nothing to freak out about. Lol. - it’s still a great book, nonetheless.
I’m tempted to watch it
My uncle, when I visited him, after getting out of boot camp, I wanted to watch the new exorcist movie and I wasn't having it. Cause I am not missing anything.
This Film is soo Bad it’s kind of Good Cheese 🧀
The Plot is Ludicrous
Inane and Gut Bustingly Hilarious
It's a beautiful disaster.
It's difficult to watch this video because it's trying so hard to be funny that it's hard to gather the actual criticisms and points. Every 5 seconds there's some joke, and it makes the viewer forget what the topic is.
Great video! The info is pretty accurate. "HERETIC VS BELIEVER". Different times, different beliefs. I would say Heretic comes out on top. Heretic had 80% connections to the first. Believer only 40%. Both had GOOD INTENTIONS. But the material in both movies WAS VERY BADLY DELIVERED. "BELIEVER" was not even capable of mentioning PAZUZU, at least out of respect IMO. Guess what William Friedkin... you are STILL the undisputed CHAMPION of "The Exorcist Franchise"!!! (R.I.P.) 😎😎😎
I will take the original sequels missteps, amateur mistakes, and archaic effects over having to indulge a movie that seems to have placed most of the focus on finding a way to shoehorn in identity politics and woke bullshit
yes, its not a good movie. but its not a bad movie either. If you want a proper sequel, technically, there's always the ninth configuration. And I had NO idea that was Paul Henreid until now.
I’d rather watch believer than exorcist 2 exorcist 2 is one of the worst sequels ever made the movie makes no sense .
Heretic is a much better film, as the former has gained “guilty pleasure” and “so bad it's good” cult status, while the latter is painfully bad
Never seen Exorcist Believer
I know Exorcist heretic is pretty bad
Jiggles
I'm one of maybe like 6 people who actually LIKED Believer, and I have a theory as to why I enjoyed it while so many others despised it.
I only saw the original film for the first time the day before I was set to see the new one, namely the director's cut via the Fathom Events release. So, I got to see the 1973 original in the best possible way and....I thought it was just pretty good, but not much more than that. After 50 Years of references, parodies and ripoffs....It kinda lost its impact on me. I can absolutely see why it has its reputation, don't get me wrong, but it just didn't get to me the way fellow 70's Horror Groundbreakers The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween did.
So, when I saw Believer the very next day, I didn't see some sullying of an unassailable masterpiece.... I saw a good sequel to a pretty good movie. Was it the best horror sequel I saw in 2023? The year that had Evil Dead Rise and Saw X? God No. Did I enjoy it? Yeah. I can at least tell that Green LIKED that original film, unlike with Boorman's sequel.
Then Again, I also loved all three of David Gordon Green's Halloween movies so....Maybe I'm just easily impressed. Eh, I can live with that.
The Exorcist II: The Heretic and more recently, Jurassic World: Dominion, prove that this weird idea of doing sequels based on locusts is not really that great…
Dreamscape did dream sharing way better!
Rahul Kohli at 2:08?!
12:14 What?? 😮 😮
Despite the wild nature of this release, I have to admit that this film looks aesthetically impressive.
The level of ambition these writers had 🫡🫡🫡
My wife wanted to watch the Exorcist movies since my (initial) excitement for a new movie. I highly suggested to her we skip this one. She didn't listen. She's now very confused and filled with doubt over this movie. Just garbage
Believer is one of the worst movies ever made, and certainly worse than the original sequels / prequels...
Usually, I'd say that's an overexaggeration, but... no, I agree with where you're coming from. A waste of time for everyone involved. If they make the sequels, get DGG far away from them and re-reboot.
Highlander 2 the quickening might be up there as well.whos with me?
