Stalin did read Mein Kampf, and he listened. In a speech to managers of socialist industry in 1931, Stalin stated that: “We are fifty or a hundred years behind the advanced countries. We must make good this distance in ten years. Either we do it, or they crush us. This is what our obligations to the workers and peasants of the U.S.S.R. dictate to us”.

I mean, it didn't seem farfetched that Germany could defeat the Soviet Union in 1941, and pretty much all Western observers also expected that to happen considering that Stalin's purges had stripped the Red Army of many, MANY experienced and talented officers at all levels and left it in a very weakened and disorganized state. The stunning victory over France in just 6 weeks, which on paper had the largest and most powerful military in Europe seemed to suggest that Russia would fare no better. The one thing that Hitler did NOT consider, however, was how many divisions the Soviets could conjure up as if out of thin air and the number of tanks they possessed, more specifically the KV-1 and T-34. In fact, after the start of Operation Barbarossa when the true scale of Soviet armored strength became known, Hitler actually admitted to General Bock that “Had I known they had as many tanks as that, I'd have thought twice before invading.”

It was possible, but only if a few things had panned out differently - even then it was a mammoth task and huge risk. Barbarossa was delayed because of the Italians coming unstuck in Greece; had that not been the case, Barbarossa wouldn’t have been delayed for over a month! Also, if the Japanese chose to invade the Siberian Far East, the Red Army wouldn’t have been able to transfer so many reinforcements from its eastern borders, including the hardened veterans that were well-trained for winter combat; however, the actual effect this would’ve had on the Moscow front is up for debate. Lastly, maybe if Germany had embraced their warm welcome as ‘liberators’ from the people of their newly-conquered eastern territories, instead of behaving like butchers, not as many would’ve chosen to join the partisan movement which constantly plagued the Wehrmacht and delayed their advance into the USSR.

Japan failed to declare war on Russia. After that the Russians had the Siberian railway. And could transfer fresh troops to Moscow that had guarded against Japan. Hitler deluded himself, thinking he could do what Napoleon faild to do. Consolidate himself in Russia. And win a decisive victory. Madness. I mean, compare it to France; there they drove the British to sea. lieratally, whereas the russians had every opportunity to retreat, if need be,all the way to the Pacific, conducting partisan operations at the same time, which they did, creating havoc from time to time. In the occupied territories.

They also invaded while using actual horses. They wanted to invade over a land area larger than western Europe using horses to transport supplies.
It is, without a doubt, one of the dumbest decisions anyone in history could make. They had very little oil and no way to support such an invasion. The nazis were good at attacking nations with very little in the way of an organized defense. Their victories were over a demoralized France that didn't expect the nazi army to invade a neutral nation in Belgium and go around the French defense and that's it.
The moment they encountered a nation that they didn't commit war crimes to get a surprise attack on the capital, they failed completely.

Obsession or not, Barbarossa was the only viable alternative open to Hitler after Britain refused to negotiate. Barbarossa was the only option which offered any prospect of alleviating Germany's dire raw material situation on a permanent basis. Simply put, Germany was strapped for raw materials of all kinds years before the war even broke out, and the Soviet Union was the only place which had them. Britain certainly did not, which was the primary reason why the naval war against Britain was a dead end for Germany.

@@priatalat The Soviets were supplying the Germans for no other reason than to buy time, as they were in the middle of a transformation of their army after their debacle in Finland. Stalin is moreover on record as stating that they (the Russians) might be able to postpone a war with Germany until 1942 or 1943- and that he intended that the Soviet Union would enter the war as the last participant who would trip the scales. Lastly- a close examination of the trade provisions of the Nazi- Soviet Non- Aggression Pact will show that it was the Soviets who consistently benefitted from that pact. In fact, the head of the German economics and armaments office stated that "The conclusion of this pact has saved Germany."

@@WielkaStopa-qh1rr I'm sorry, but that's incorrect. The oil fields at Ploesti never provided the petroleum in the quantity that the Germans required, and synthetic production never came close to filling the gap. Moreover, the Germans were strapped for bauxite, chromium, copper, manganese, rubber, and high- grade iron ore (to name just a few) starting in late 1936- and they weren't just "anywhere". While Barbarossa took place for a number of reasons, economic (and ideological) factors were paramount. See the multi- volume series "Germany and the Second World War". You should do one about the soviet attack theory. It was very well described by Suvorov and Solonin. The two regimes simply could not live together in the same system and war was inevitable.

    • @manilajohn0182
      @manilajohn0182 Місяць тому +1

That theory is a myth. Any such Russian offensive required objectives- tactical, operational, and strategic. Those objectives- airfields, factories, tank parks, HQs, and the like- required identification by the Russians so that they could be targeted for destruction. They ranged from a few miles to a few hundred miles behind the main line of resistance. Any of them immediately behind the front would have to be reconnoitered by ground forces stealthily crossing the border. Any of them not immediately behind the front had to be detected by short and long- range reconnaissance aircraft. This 'had' to be done, or any such Russian invasion of German territory would have been that of a blind man stabbing in the dark. The Germans did this to the Russians in the months prior to Barbarossa, and the Russians recorded cross border violations by small groups of armed men as well as an abnormally large number of violations of their airspace. 'No' such Russian violations of German airspace were recorded by the Germans in the months prior to Barbarossa- nor were any cross border violations by Russian ground forces noted.
Stalin is on record however, as saying that the Soviet Union 'might' be prepared to enter the war in the 1943 time frame, 'as the last power which would tilt the scales'. In June of 1941 however, the Soviet Ground Forces were in the midst of a massive reorganization which stemmed from: 1) their lamentable performance on Finland, and; 2) the stunning Germany victory in France and the low countries.

It is hardly ever noted that when Hitler invaded Poland, so did the Russians. The Russians and Germany had an agreement to divide Poland. Yet, it was Germany’s invasion of Poland that started World War II. The invasion of Poland by Germany was the red line for Britain and France. But Britain and France never declared war on the USSR. On one level I get it but at the same time I don’t. Both the NAZI’s and the Communists were despicable and a horror. Both needed to be destroyed. Patton was right about going after the communists in Russia. But the Cold War eventually destroyed the USSR. What is even more crazy is how America and other democracies have empowered the Chinese communists since the USSR imploded. That was dumb on a scale that cannot be charted.

you don't need to know about that! you have to think that Russia was always a villain! that's how propaganda works. Russia is always bad. Russia became an empire because of the wars it waged on others and so on. but it's completely different with USA and Great Britain! they became great empires because they always did good things to other countries, other nations and other races! and also you don't need to know about how stalin tried to create a military alliance with france and great britain againts germany to protect checoslovakia and later poland but they all refused to make soviet union an ally and only after that, when hitler approached stalin that molotov-ribentrop pact was signed. here's what chatgpt says about that:
      ChatGPT 4 | Midjourney | Claude | Suno, [11/13/24 9:48 PM]
Yes, the Soviet Union negotiated with England and France about the possible conclusion of a military alliance against Nazi Germany before the takeover of Czechoslovakia. In the late 1930s, the situation in Europe was becoming increasingly tense, and the countries of Western Europe recognized the need to unite efforts to counter Nazi Germany.
However, the negotiations for a military alliance between the Soviet Union, England, and France were unsuccessful due to disagreements and mistrust among the parties. As a result, in March 1939, Germany annexed Czechoslovakia, which became a catalyst for the signing of the Munich Agreement between England, France, Italy, and Germany, granting Hitler part of Czechoslovakia's territory.
After the Munich Agreement, the Soviet Union began active measures to ensure its security and signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany (the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact).
Yes, in 1939, the Soviet Union proposed to Poland to conclude an agreement on mutual assistance and a military alliance for collective defense against Nazi Germany. According to this proposal, the Soviet Union wanted to station its troops on Polish territory for defense in the event of a German attack on Poland as well as in the event of a German attack on the Soviet Union.
However, the Polish government rejected this proposal and did not agree to the deployment of Soviet troops on its territory. As a result, when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, the Soviet Union did not enter the war on Poland's side; instead, it signed a non-aggression pact with Germany (the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact), which provided for the division of Poland between the two countries.
you should read history books before watching these documentaries because almost all of them are biased to one side or the other. russian documentaries are biased in favor of russia, and american/european documentaries are biased i favor of usa/europe... it's always been like that, since the cold war. it never really stopped. putin said about this, that usa and europe are rewriting history on their favor. but nobody cared about that and now they're doing the same thing in russia. it's a fucked up planet...

Barbarosa was late due to Mussolini's invasion of Greece, which infuriated Hitler who now had to rescue his ally. And Hitler's patience with Stalin's double-dealing finally ended with the Danube Conference. More importantly, Hitler's biological clock was ticking. He knew he only had so much time of good health to launch his attack against Russia. It was Hitler's fear of failing health that spurred him to open a second front when he did.
This example of a leader making historic decisions of war based almost entirely on his personal health should not be discounted when looking at China's Xi and his ambitions on Taiwan. Xi is 71 years old.

Shortly after his stunning victory at Austerlitz in1805, Napoleon commented that he only had a few good campaigning years left in him. I don't much like comparing the two leaders, but both were acutely aware of the relationship between their physical health and their ability to perform. I don't know if bailing out Mussolini much affected the start of Barbarossa. In USSR the Spring floods were still very much an issue along the intended lines of advance and the Germans knew they had to wait for them to subside, to avoid a quagmire from the outset.

Therefore Barbarossa was not a result of Hitler's miscalculation, it was a result of consensus among Germany's best strategists, who happened to be all wrong.
