7:50 I agree with this sentiment. When you put in so much time and effort, to just throw your images on a platform that people look at for two seconds...I don't know. Just seems like you're wasting the "potential" of the images. I think at this point a lot of people would rather have ten people look at their work intentionally on a website compared to a thousand mindless scrollers on Instagram. IG is still useful, just not in that way anymore. For me at least.
This is it right here
What’s the difference between directing people to your IG who will intently look vs your website who will intently look?
@@Mononoken I don’t think there is a huge difference aside from the quality of images. If someone wants to look at my work, I’m directing them to my website because the images look better.
I’m just talking about the average user. The average person is not sitting on images for too long while browsing IG. That’s why I implied ten people looking intently versus a thousand that just flick past in an instant. There will always be crossover though and some people will sit on images and actually look while on Instagram.
@@Mononoken I also think people go to a website with a different intention. On IG it's like people stumble upon your picture almost randomly, while on a website people intentionally want to check out your work. The IG feed usually is full of visual noise. And the habit of scrolling mindlessly (which Instagram, TikTok and Facebook are profiting of and kinda built upon) is playing a huge role in how people are consuming photos, I think. It also kinda sucks to have your photos show up in a feed between dancing teenagers and memes. Yet again, it's the most simple way to showcase work. Tough topic for sure.
👀
A monthly vlog series would be great. Seeing the contact sheets as you make them is actually fun to see. You're sharing your first reactions too. Share another next month!
These photos and the way you explain things..🧡 it's so calming.. keep it up 💛
vlogs like these bring your channel to life bruh, it kinda balances with the usual recap/review videos which makes it more interesting.
I’m totally onboard with the longer vlog style. Moving from one topic to another gives a segmented feel, each with content to pique interest, and ultimately offers so much more than a shorter home-run video. Thanks, and looking forward to the next!
thank you for actually showing the steps for making contact sheet ! beautiful photos as usual thank you
This is so cool, my grandparents live right next-door to Holmequest. I grew up with the farmers son, this is so trippy to see all of this in your video!
love the vlog format!
i love this kind of videos. it feels like im traveling with you, i love it.
A new Willem video is always a great video. Keep killing it man.
Yeh, you certainly have got your own style - so nice, so good to see this in another photographer. I found your commentary about the difference in light and colour between east and west coast to be both insightful and significant.
genuinely enjoyed this style of video
I like the format! Have you ever ventured in the Pacific Northwest? You might find something different than California
Can we take a minute to appreciate the color grade/vibe on those talking head shots let’s go 🔥
I really like this format ! Fun and easy to watch, yeah it’s a little unstructured but this makes it really authentic
Love to see the Channel 5 hat
Hi bro. I again wanted to say that those vlogs are so chill and vibe. Like somehow they are really comforting, I learned alot from you man. Keep it up brodie 🤍🙏🤍
I really like this style of video. It is fun to watch and really cool and interesting to see how you work ... :-)
Willems East Coast work>Willems west coast work (mid). And its not even close
california rolls 🍣
Hey awesome video, any chance you could shoot with the bessa t soon ?
Yo what’s that sick framed car print under your shelf?
Great video You are exactly right about Instagram I just deleted all my accounts there I felt I couldn't see any point in it anymore My main mission is to share photos for people to see and enjoy But even with that idea it sort of felt like I was just throwing pictures in the wind Sort of what you said Anyway this is only the second vlog of yours I've watched Looks like I better get to watching some more 😁
was fucking amazing mate!!
I think it’s super fun to see this style of video. It’s a really free and relaxed feeling to watch.
I love this format! It’s really inspiring to see the different adventures you have, the various processes you try, and simply seeing the photos you take :)
Happy to hear it! Thank you
I like this format, Willem. Feels very genuine!
Nice video. East Coast photos
over west coast. You should do a darkroom video.
Hey, this style of the video perfectly fit the messages. I like the mix of topics and breadth covered. What I really enjoy is how you so often photograph places on both coasts where I have lived or spent long periods of time myself. Your beautiful photos always bring back cheerful memories. Cheers! ✌️
Thanks very much Bob!
wow the first day of the month, Willy with the holeshot 😮💨
😂
I would say that a video like this makes it feel like actually hanging out with you rather than watching a video in a more "formal way". It's more honest and relaxed and I think that fits your personality the best.
Honey wake up Willem posted
And now I will have a good day thanks dude 🙏
Met you at Joe Greer’s book signing. Your at home development video is what got me into building up my own setup. Love the content man!! LA film gang!!
Great meeting you :)
i really enjoyed the next vlog. I wish you all the best for the future and i hope you can make an easy full time career as a creator. We need you. Best wishes from Switzerland.
Roman
I love the format Willem!🙌🏼🙌🏼
The not-to-serious, relaxed feeling of these videos are great. I really enjoy it.
yo finally more vlogs, god has answered my prayer, lmaoo looked forward to this willem good job
Good stuff, as usual.
Makes me want to do dark room work
This laid back form, I like it!
Video/vlog is perfect. Do what you want, think is best and love. Greetings from Belgium.
really enjoyed this slower video! ..if youre not that happy with Instagram (understandably) I think checking out grainery might be worth it
the music choice complements your video and photo style so well! Such a pleasure to watch your work.
i like to load up my camera with some 120 while I watch this lol. I like this style of vlog!
also any chance of a reprint of walking svalbard in the future?
Great video Willem. Do you usually leave your negs in the holder when making contact sheets or was this just for demonstration?
you know jake tovar! he used to photograph a band that i really like, the hate drugs :)
Loving your vlogs. Loving your 'proper' videos. Love it all! Thanks.
brotherrrr I can't even afford 23 frames... and here you are convincing me to invest in a full darkroom set up 🥵
these are some fire flics mr. verbeeck
vlogs are life ♥ so damn good man.
this is inspiring to watch. i gave a quota to myself to shoot more in film but im kinda ignoring and somehow forgets in longer period. now i need to get back to it.
This is great! Your adaptation of living space to darkroom space is inspiring. The pictures of upstate NY resonated with me, as I spent a lot of time there and the color pallet is very different from SoCal. Go with your gut - your intuition is fabulous.
it's fun! The cheese pull photo is killer
Love a vlog style part. ❤️
Hi I rlly appreciate ur videos!
My favorite shot is the pizza slice! Absolutely stunning
Agreed
What camera and film stock you’ve made it with?
I would love a complete darkroom tutorial
How does your color grading look like it's c-type hand printed.... bruh so good
What a great adventurous, yet very informational vlog. Love these, and miss your content Willem!
This is incredible wow
This is sweet!! Format is great, relaxed and still engaging. Big love from Aus.
love this format!
You got me thinking of new places to go shoot in LA, great to see it fresh from someone else's eyes.
I think this is my favorite format to watch when it comes to UA-cam videos!
I Love the format
I would love to print color phots. We only got to print b&w in college. I enjoyed your book btw and am happy to have it in my collection. Keep em' coming.
I’m enjoying this format. It’s a relaxed, more personal flavor. But also like the more “produced”/themed videos. A mix is nice. Great stuff!
23 rolls of film????, in one month???? You must quite literally have money to burn. The simple reason I sacked off film and returned to digital, with non of the faffing with development and scanning either, happy days again.
7:15 is such an amazing shot
Love watching your videos. Sitting outside on a balcony right now chilling, smoking and drinking and it’s just so peaceful. Thought it was interesting that you heat your chemicals to 35 degrees Celsius because I heat mine to 38 degrees. But then I use different chemicals, more at a hobby level.
Keep up the good work!
I really enjoyed your video and sharing it with us. I found your East Coast seems to have a yearning about them which I enjoyed. I’m new to your channel and was feeling privileged to see your process of doing contact sheets and making prints. I printed B&W a million years ago. A box of 8x10 paper was $13.00. I had to tray process the prints, fix them, dry them on a double sided heater with canvas which held the print against the stainless steel plate. I can see how times have changed with your processor doing color. Wow. Thanks for sharing.
Format is fantastic. Look forward to seeing what is next. I've been watching for years and you continuously evolve and never disappoint.
I love this style of videos man, keep them coming!
It almost, ALMOST sounds like maybe you are realizing the East Coast was where it is at. Maybe. Wouldn’t be the first person to have feelings of wanting to return to East coast after living in LA for a bit.
A grab bag, in effect. (Weekend Plus.) I liked it. Certainly envy you the darkroom setup.
5:13 THE ONLY ZAZA I'M WANTING>:) Awesome video as always man!!:D
Great work Willem! Loved the video format! My favorite shot was the New Yorker image with the light peaking at the bottom. Curious to know your thoughts on grainery?
I’m confused wym about instagram. Just post the photos from your website to your ig.
That being said fuck IG.
Phewww what a relief to hear you compare your website with instagram. It certainly highlights the thing that we should all be asking ourselves, and that is, why am i taking this photograph ? GREAT !
Great video. Thank you for posting. I have never visited California, nor the LA area. Is it possible that smog in LA contributes to more golden light on photos? Cheers from Canada
The word "Honeysuckle" is so funny to me idk why.
Gosh those east coast pictures are just so telling of the environment, you've captured the spirit of the place effortlessly.
loved this video format! it felt much more personal, maybe since theres more BTS/talking clips in between?
Can you make another video explaining how to do contact sheets at home….with affordable options? Love your video btw!
PLEASE DO MORE LIKE THIS!
from your Indonesia fan ☝
whatever Willem makes I am sure I am gonna watch it. Btw, what films did you use? You think it made a difference in the colors in your pictures?
Beautiful content mate. Inspiring and always making me want to go out and shoot! Can I ask if you pushed the film you printed here? Tones are beaut!
That was a fun vid. Love seeing the sheets
Loving the printing content. Could you maybe in a separate video explain what filtration you're using?
It is fun, especially because its more content of you!
Great to see ur personal work also. Thanks a lot again Willem and keep up the good work.
I saw Roman and I smiled so hard.......thank you, Willem ❤🩹
thanks for putting into words exactly how i'm feeling about instagram since a while :)
Love the vlog! Keep them coming 👍🏻👍🏻 also more printing videos please 🤓😍
it was great to see the regular photo content + the vlog to see more of the behind the scenes of the film process. Loved this man!
Hey Willem, dig the format - quick question on contact sheet printing please, did you still have to do test exposures to find the right exposure time? or is there a simpler way of doing it? I understand we are not trying to get accurately exposed individual images here just curious how to get an average time for a group of negatives if that makes sense? Thank you :)
100% with you on the Instagram feeling less friendly towards artists and creatives recently. I miss what it used to be.
Great video!! Tell me, how do you get a reference as to what colours to dial into your enlarger? Thanks William!
how much does each contact sheet run you? (excluding the cost of the equipment and time, which i'm sure are both substantial) I love the idea of having contact sheets for every roll i take, but there aren't that many places that offer that as a service from what i can see
Crazy thinking we're only a couple years apart in age. Hope to shoot with you someday, East or West coast.
