I agree. Varnay has a darker and larger voice that feels like a tidal wave. She's got a stronger lower register, with wider vibrato and cavernous sound, that allows her to sound more matronly and mature. Nilsson's voice is brighter and more concentrated (not as expansive as Varnay's). She focuses all her power into a sharp laser beam that can even slice through diamond. Her tone is much more pleasant in the high notes, as it is full of beauty, but her low notes are rather murky and weak compared to Varnay's.
The Ortrud-Elsa pairing par excellence as embodied by Astrid Varnay and Birgit Nilsson is Heaven on Earth. Imagine if Varnay and Nilsson had done Amneris and Aida respectively with Hans Beirer as Radames, Hans Hotter as Amonasro, Kurt Böhme as the King, Nicola Moscona as Ramfis, Lorenz Fehenberger as the Messenger, and Irmgard Seefried as the High Priestess. I would definitely watch it to the full and applaud as loudly as possible as the entirety of Aida ends.
There are so many Amneris and Aida pairings that would have happened in a perfect world... Nilsson with Varnay, or Callas with Flagstad, or Jones with Dimitrova etc...
@@dramaticsoprano5168 No doubt about it. If you were to have seven ideal Amneris and Aida pairings, who would they be? Personally, mine would be the following singers. 1. Martha Mödl (Amneris) and Ljuba Welitsch (Aida) 2. Astrid Varnay (Amneris) and Birgit Nilsson (Aida) 3. Suzanne Juyol (Amneris) and Carla Martinis (Aida) 4. Irma Eszenyi (Amneris) and Maria Callas (Aida) 5. Ludmila Dvorakova (Amneris) and Mary Curtis Verna (Aida) 6. Ingrid Steger (Amneris) and Ingrid Bjoner (Aida) 7. Sigrid Kehl (Amneris) and Heather Harper (Aida)
Amazing contrast of Bright and Dark… as it should be with these contrasting characters! That messa di voce in 2:20 😍 THATS technique…And that last A# note… full of colors and overtone in such a way that it doesn’t sound high
Astrid Varnay: Varnay simply does not to sing, amateur technique, She's definitely awful: not able to sing high notes properly.Next to Nilsson: Varnay is zero as a singer. Varnay is an excited screamer
For my taste Varnay has a very beautiful, powerful voice that seems bigger than other wagnerian voices. Bottom is perfect, because she was also dramatic mezzo.
@@ginopietracupa4305 excuse me??!! How dare you say such a thing??!! I am a singer myself so I have certainly more knowledge about singing than you and I consider Varnay the greatest Wagnerian soprano ever!! Not only did she have an enormous dark bottomless voice with round and full upper register but she also posessed an incredible singing thechnique unlike many and she knew how to last... she sang on the greatest level for over forty years!! So stop with your uneducated nonsense!!!!
Varnay is a Queen, here more impressive than ever... a vocal splendor and authority
Varnay's voice is bigger than Nilsson's, but Birgit is very beautiful here.

Two MAJESTIC voices… 😍😍

I am really curious about Beirer's Radames. It must be fresh and powerful.
@@hansjancker5057 I am positive it was. When it comes to Verdi, Hans Beirer was more famous as Otello.
@@operaanimelover369 Some critics said that Beirer's voice was too big for Radames, at the beginning of the 1950s.

Astrid voice is bigger than Nilsson but Nilsson voice is brighter than Astrid. but in Wagnerian term, i like Astrid than Nilsson.
Imagine the joy of hearing that in the theatre! Callas and Flagstad would have been amazing!
Варнай здесь просто гигант. Голос - вулкан!
Потрясающий канал!
Volcanic!
Fantastic! It's Bayreuth, right?
Yes, 1954 with Jochum conducting.
