    I think you all forget something really important. The Oscars have been trying for the last 5 years to reinvent their image and be more audience friendly. More recently with the launch of Best Popular Film that didnt work out well. Now they want to find something else. Some will say ' Black Panther ' winning Best Picture is the way to go. But the Academy, will never decline from its tradional hardcore judging system even if they so desire a change. But who is the solution? Lady Gaga. Not only she is the pop culture phenomenon that draws millions of viewers and conversations but she also has the support of critics and box office. Im calling it; this is Lady Gaga's year.

    Most of the people in the comments probably haven’t even watched other performances by leading actress as usual. People are also forgetting that “A star a born” is a remake of a remake. Even though Gaga’s acting was “great” Oscars will go with originality & blown away performances like Glenn Close.

    I saw Cher in Moonstruck, while she had some good moments there were some awkward acting moments too I was wonderstruck by how she defeated Glenn Close's superb performance in Fatal Attraction. That was outrageous. And this year I can see Gaga winning over Close this year, Close's movie The Wife is deteriorating her chances.

    • @funkystyle7249
      @funkystyle7249 5 років тому +1

      Bob Garrett, I haven't watched the movie but I have checked reviews from different film critics and some scrutinized reviews say that overall its a charming performance but yes like you said her best acting moments are when she sings, the other non singing dramatic scenes lack, but some say its also because parts of her character is underwritten.
      Edit:But that still doesn't matter becauseOscar's Best Actress awards don't necessarily go to the person who gave the best acting performance of the year.
      If Emma stone won for a recorded singing and dancing perf , despite the heavier good dramatic performances of the year (Isabelle Huppert as a rape victim seeking revenge and Ruth Negga in Loving) I can see Oscars awarding Gaga. My personal choice would be Melissa Mc Carthy.

      To this day, Cher osar one of the worst winner ever, The Academy better make sure that Gaga performances are oscar caliber or don't give it to her, cause it will just pop star oscar popularity contest, and you know how bad Cher's oscar to this day

    • @erinpilla
      @erinpilla 5 років тому +2

      I want Gaga to win not because of the popularity factor, but because her performance transcends beyond you know, skill. It's very timely and relevant. I cannot say it is rare, but it is not that often that commercial and critical STUPENDOUSLY agree on the strength of someone's performance. With the new generations of movie patrons becoming younger and more money-conscious, it's performances like that of Gaga's that balances the commercial and critical dynamics of the industry. I love Colman's performance (based in the trailer) but I cannot say I can bring all of my friends and my partner to watch it. I can say though that me and my girls and my sister can watch A Star is Born for 73 times LOL! My point is yes, Gaga's performance is undeniably strong and transcendent, but what it has that the others seem to lack (I have not seen them, so feel free to say this is kinda biased) is again, timeliness. Do Colman, Close, or Aparicio echo the general film aesthetic of the times? Maybe yes, maybe partly. But does Gaga echo it? FULLY. It's a performance that tugs strings of viewers from 14 to 75. I have seen it thrice, and it just becomes more exciting to watch again because you see people of different generations in a single theater all agreeing that her performance is one that is universally affective. You just damn well know it and you are sure of it

    This is a tough one. I currently have Lady Gaga in first place only because the Academy loves it when people who aren't full time actors come along and give a great performance. Cher and Jennifer Hudson are examples.
    But Glenn Close really is overdue (should've won for Fatal Attraction in my opinion), and I'm tempted to switch her to first on my GoldDerby for Lead Actress because of that narrative. However, the reason I don't have her in first place for now is because The Wife isn't going to get nominated for anything else in my opinion. It's a good but not great movie. That really hurt Willem Dafoe last year, him being the sole nominee of his movie. The buzz for her is there, but it's not as strong as Julianne Moore in Still Alice where everyone said she was a lock to win from the moment that movie premiered at TIFF. This year, all acting categories are up for debate.
    As far as Olivia Colman, it's very possible. I currently have her in third place in Lead Actress. But I'm inclined to agree with Tom and Pete that if she's nominated for Supporting Actress, she'll most likely win (I'm currently predicting Claire Foy in that category for reasons I'll discuss another time). However, this is why I think it's an uphill battle for her if she's put into Lead Actress. Lady Gaga is taking the Golden Globe Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical without a doubt, in my opinion. It'll be A Star is Born night at the Golden Globes, very similar to the night La La Land had there, but of course I don't think it'll be a clean sweep. I think it'll take Best Film Comedy/Musical, Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical (Bradley Cooper), and Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical (Lady Gaga). ALMOST, no one makes a comeback and wins an Oscar after losing the Comedy/Musical Golden Globe in an acting category. Frances McDormand in Fargo is one of those exceptions. So that's the major thing I feel works against Olivia Colman for Lead Actress.

      @jackmahanes4591 5 років тому +1

      Ivo Stoyanov I do agree with you that Bradley Cooper is the front runner right now. He’s definitely more likely to win an acting Oscar than Lady Gaga. I think he probably easily wins the Golden Globe in the Comedy/Musical category. Christian Bale I see is now competing in the Comedy/Musical field. But I don’t think Hollywood is ready to reward someone for playing a man they truly dispise. Could be wrong, but I think it’s Cooper’s.

    In no particular order:
    Yalitza Aparicio (she has my heart, and she carries this film on her shoulders)
    Sakura Ando (if you haven't seen Shoplifters, please do, she was this amazing scene at the station where I started crying; incredible)
    Lady Gaga (it's beautiful to see this performer grow, and she has proven herself an actor)
    Olivia Coleman (who is the best out of the trio in her film, she steals the scene from Oscar winners Stone and Weisz, although I thought she would be in supporting rather than lead)
    And those are the ones I have seen so I can't judge Viola Davis, Melissa McCarthy, Joanna Kulig or Glenn Close-- but I hear they are all wonderful. IF I HAD TO CHOOSE A WINNER, I would go for Aparicio's subtle and beautiful performance.

    Gold derby has always been leaning to Gaga and a Star is Born. But now the hype has faded. They have underestimated Glenn Close especially Anne. But now they all are in Glenn Close bandwagon after Globes put things right. She deserves to win because she is amazing in the Wife, not the overdue narratives

    I was impressed with Gaga in ASIB. And I was not a Lady Gaga fan before I watched the film. But the academy voters will probably not vote for her because she isn’t an established actress. Maybe the whole lady gaga popstar mystique will be in voters’ minds? Colman should really be supporting, strange the studio will be campaigning for her in the lead actress category. Also they really love Roma. I will have to watch it.

      Team Dream They should gave the award to the best performance of the year. Former nominations or experience in acting shouldn’t count. I think The Wife was a good movie, but not a great one. Glenn doesn’t have an Oscar and voters might think it’s her time now and Lady Gaga can wait...But sincerely, Gaga gave the most transcendent performance of the year!

    Bradley Cooper did an amazing job by... taking the makeup off of Lady Gaga.
    That's your argument?
    She's a popular singer and she plays a woman who becomes a popular singer.
    I'm down with her winning, but give me a reason she deserves more than a nomination. Give me a reason she wins and Glenn Close doesn't.

    • @StardustMega
      @StardustMega 5 років тому +1

      Because although she played a popular singer, Gaga played someone who became a popular singer that is absolutely NOTHING like her in real life. Some might argue that, her playing such a different personality in her own career path is actually even more impressive....that she didn't "fall in" to what she is naturally familiar with. She made a completely different person in the music industry believable. There was a point in the film where I genuinely had to stop and remind myself that I was watching Lady Gaga.
      She took direction extremely well. She is one of the most respected and highly acclaimed musical icons of all time and she re-made herself enough to a point that audiences even from the high brow critic's seats to the the middle-American cheap seats not only love her, but believe that someone who was once wearing a meat dress, avante garde stilletos, and gawked extremist post-modern Andy Warhol art talk, was a relatable, shy, humble working girl that didn't know at all really how to handle fame, addiction, and her own insecurities.
      Context: When Gaga boomed in 2009, nothing could stop her, she handled every interview, red carpet, music video, and she was intimidating and a runaway success based on her ability to control her own creativity, get people changing the conversation, and totally change the music industry to benefit her. She was 21. One of her most famous quotes is, "If you ever are wondering whether to get married or go for the job, remember this: Your career will never wake up one morning and tell you it doesn't love you anymore."
      In A Star is Born, Ally is a 30-something year old girl who has no clue where to start and has completely given up on herself. She takes care of her father. By the time she is getting fame (by way of meeting a man that gets it for her), she is battling how to deal with fame, let's her executives control her for the fame, while trying to micro-manage her true love's footsteps, who happens to be an addict. She literally would put her career on the line for her love. She literally has let men affect her life her entire life and has no idea how to deal with the trauma of that. By the end of the film, after the pivotal moment near the end, it literally takes a death for her to finally make an independent move: dye her hair back before performing live after her husband's death, finally beginning to understand just how out of control she was the entire time. It can be assumed she learned from this, but...we never really get to know. It's still very possible she let the chaos of it all damage her to a point of no return or even being jaded.
      Lady Gaga and Ally couldn't be anymore different.
      Sounds like two different people.
      That's acting.

    Even though I know Nicole Kidman had the least screen time of the three women in The Hours, I understand why she was placed as a lead because her character appears to have a greater impact on the overall story. Her scenes aren't as subtle, they're dominated by her presence so you easily forget she's less in the film compared to Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore.

    This being the third year in a row where the Lead Actress race is the most competitive and crowded, I think the Oscars should go the Emmy route and expand the shortlist to 6 nominees. Hell, the only thing I'm sure of is that Viola Davis won't win but will be nominated. First, the reception for 'Widows' has been ecstatic, second, she's Viola Davis, third, of course, she is the highest profile actress of colour this season . I'd love for Saoirse to be nominated so she can break the record of youngest 4-time nominee (and youngest fifth-time nominee playing Jo March in 'Little Women' next year). People are still forgetting about Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, a movie that Disney has so much faith in, they shafted 'Solo' so it would thrive during the Holidays.
