The words Labour and strikes go hand in hand. I worked in the motor industry in the 70’s. I remember agitators causing disputes to meet their own ends not to look after the workers. It would end up with 6 week strikes to get an extra 2% which when you worked out what you had lost during the 6 weeks meant you ended up worse off. These strikes were brought about by bullying and intimidation, Maggie ended all that by getting secret ballots. If only she was around today.

@Phil The Messer Try being affected by the strikes when you're on jury duty and NEED the train to get to and from court, because that's the only form of transport with buses that you can reimbursed for. Do you know what happens when you don't show up to court? Do you know the costs to the tax payer when they have to wait for jurors to show up because they can't get a train?
I do, the last lot of strikes got me in the above situation, the drivers and guards are being greedy and simply don't care about the knock on affect of their actions. I wouldn't care up here in the north we don't even have decent trains, we have buses that were converted to trains, we can't even get them things changed and yet drivers are getting pay rise after pay rise when they hold the nation ransom.
Their actions during the lead up to Christmas will affect businesses large and small and will have a knock on affect to the staff, and the businesses tax contributions when their sales are down due to this....and it will be because people will have to buy online because they can't get the train...therefore having an affect on the overall tax contributions of businesses. Then there's the staff who physically cannot get into work because there's not transport, what are they to do?
60k a year is alot of money, why on earth they think they deserve more when the last few years they distributed peoples lives so much, is beyond me. They're the selfish ones who are being pushed by the selfish unions, because the more the train staff make the more the unions can charge for their membership...thus increasing their own revenue. All at the expense of regular folk who rely on the rail service.

@Phil The Messer from someone who worked on the railway as a guard in the 70s we where offered 50p extra an hour to take fares .
We nearly took there hands off .wonder where the worry about safety was then and worrying about what happens to the ticket collecters on the train who's job it was to do that . Lets not kid ourselves we including myself did not give a dame when it come to more money in our pocket. I also supported the miners strike and the steel workers . Did not move any coal or steel by rail over the entire strike .Then we went on strike after them
The miners and steelworkers showed there thanks by loading up the wagons that broke there strike by crossing there picket lines as quickly as possible . To get there bonuses. Thats the last time i supported the Unions.

They can't be trusted with the power they have now never mind more. But just know a lot of people understand this and appreciate the forces and what you do for us as well as having strength and tenacity to get on with it even when at times you guys are taking shovels of shit to the face. For example when i see our country turn on soldiers that have been sent into messy situations where things got hairy and did not go as planned and rather than the government just taking it on the chin they pie it all on the guys they sent in and jail them and such. Robert Watts most people have never heard of a Union, let alone are in one. THAT is the problem. All people should have the power to fight back against employers who would take the piss. Equally we need to make sure employees can’t take the piss, it’s a balancing act right, not an easy one. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it or its not the right thing to do. One day a Driver decided to travel passenger first class ( which was obviously not allowed) and when questioned by a Manager threatened him with violence. The Driver was subsequently disciplined and suspended for one day so the ASLEF drivers went on strike for the day in sympathy disrupting passengers all day. The Driver should have been sacked. Having witnessed someone slip through the gap down to trackside I for one support the guards. Knowing that they are there watching out for me is very reassuring. And as for saying that Labour are “responsible” for the strikes is ridiculous, the union members voted to strike it had nothing to do with Labour. You don’t mention the fact that the tories are footing the bill for the fare claim backs thus enabling the train companies to prolong the strike. It makes me laugh when people moan about the unions and in the same breath berate the pay deal that the unions have achieved for their members. Whilst I don't agree with the rail drivers going on strike because of the distruption it will cause I also don't think that trains should be run without guards either, this nonsense of wanting to operate trains without guards is irresponsible when the times we now live in is so dangerous. A driver cannot see what's going on 100 yards behind him on the train and it's Rediculous to expect him to do so. This is all about money again being put before safety and I totally agree with the drivers on that point so both sides need to have a look at the situation again. If the management get their own way and don't use guards the fares won't drop its be used to pay bigger bonuses to the hiaracy as usual.
